Evan Funke's New Hollywood Lounge Goes Big on Roman Street Food

Eater29-05-2025
A new Roman-inspired cocktail lounge from acclaimed chef Evan Funke and Giancarlo Pagani, the managing partner of Mother Wolf Group, is headed to Hollywood. Bar Avoja opens in the short-lived former Mars cocktail bar space, tucked behind Mother Wolf, on May 30. Mars first opened in January 2024 with a $5,000 a year membership that came with a personal spirits locker, priority seating, and invitations to special events; the bar closed in April 2025.
At Bar Avoja, Funke will prepare a menu inspired by handheld Roman street food, alongside folded and thin-crust pizza and cocktails. A frittatina di carbonara, a pasta stuffed fritter, is filled with spaghetti swirled with guanciale, black pepper, and egg, or eggplant, mozzarella di bufala, and ricotta salata. A fried arancini, a popular street food in the Eternal City, draws inspiration from cacio e pepe, with crema di pecorino romano and black pepper. At Bar Avoja, Funke will also prepare wood-fired pies. The Portafoglio folded to resemble a pocket, is topped with oxtail meatballs, braised greens, and fonduta di pecorino; the Wolfgang with smoked salmon, herb cream, and trout roe; and the Palermo with sugo di cipolla (onion sauce), caciocavallo, wild oregano, and sauteed bread crumbs. Funke's signature Palermo-inspired focaccia, sfincione all'aglione, will also be on the menu. Gelato and cannoli with ricotta and Santa Barbara pistachios will be available for dessert.
Cocktails are made to pair with Funke's cooking, like the Morso Di Vita with Grey Goose, Chinola passion fruit, tomato, basil, and lemon, as well as the Santa Infuocata, mixing Malfy gin, Meyer lemon honey, and Olio Santo olive oil. Alongside cocktails, Bar Avoja will also serve wine and mocktails.
Bar Avoja retains elements of the luxe Mars interior, like the intimate red leather seating and an accent wall with wire cages displaying bottles of liquor. Small glass tabletop lamps cast a gentle line downward onto dark wood tables, with strips of metal dividing the top into quarters. It's a venue that's easy to settle into for a few hours, catching up with friends over a bottle of wine and bites from Funke.
The bar will be open Thursday to Saturday, by reservation only. For fans of Funke's cooking at Mother Wolf and his eponymous restaurant, Funke, the arrival of Bar Avoja offers an enticing new upscale cocktail option in the neighborhood that's guaranteed to have some top-notch food.
Bar Avoja will open at 1545 Wilcox Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90028 on May 30 with hours on Thursday to Saturday, from 6 p.m. until late. Reservations are required and available on Resy .

Daily Horoscope for August 02, 2025

General Daily Insight for August 02, 2025 Competing cravings could create conflict today. When relational Venus in sensitive Cancer tangles with big-picture Pluto in compulsively logical Aquarius at 1:46 am EDT, it may bother us that the things we're drawn to don't quite make rational sense. Pushing hard for the most efficient course of action might backfire as motivated Mars misreads touchy Chiron. However, the soul-searching Scorpio Moon then gives Mars some help. Mustering the patience to sort out our complicated feelings should bring us results we'll find satisfying! Aries March 21 – April 19 Your desire to prove yourself could be much stronger than usual. While physical Mars in your materialistic 6th house agitates angsty Chiron in your sign, you may feel like you need to point to concrete achievements in order to justify your existence. As you work through this, strive to avoid taking your insecurities out on your peers — they might not be equipped to give the validation you crave. Thankfully, confiding in a trusted loved one should be an accessible way to find perspective. Taurus April 20 – May 20 Approaching life as a competition may not serve you well at this time. If you secretly hope to control or dominate others, that's likely to be apparent in your communications, no matter how sweetly you try to word things. You're not wrong for wanting to protect your own interests, but there are probably ways to do this that don't involve tearing people down. Try talking directly to someone who's in a position to help you — at minimum, you might receive some welcome sympathy! Gemini May 21 – June 20 Keeping up with your peers could seem key to your emotional security. As abundant Venus in your finance sector looks toward pushy Pluto in your expansive 9th house, you may feel pressured to spend money on a trip or other cultural experience that everyone else is apparently pursuing. Hold on — perhaps you were saving up for a more personal goal! You can probably find a way to make the splurge work if you truly want to, but don't force anything that isn't working. Cancer June 21 – July 22 Asking for what you want has the potential to disrupt a power dynamic today. Unfortunately, you're at risk of feeling guilty after you assert yourself. Wanting to be liked is perhaps part of your dilemma, but you may also miss the basic security of knowing where you stand with the other person while appeasing Venus in your sign conflicts with turbulent Pluto in your collaboration zone. Even if rocking the boat was absolutely imperative, you're not required to be happy about it yet! Leo July 23 – August 22 Prioritizing your material security might challenge some of your cherished assumptions. As driven Mars in your finance zone provokes frustrated Chiron in your dogmatic 9th house, it's likely to become apparent that a belief you hold just isn't working out in the real world. The critical voices in your life may be all too happy to point out your apparent hypocrisy. There's more to the story than they see, though. You can ignore the hecklers and honor the complexity of the situation in private. Virgo August 23 – September 22 Doing what's best for you could threaten a close alliance of yours. As approval-craving Venus in your social sector gossips with manipulative Pluto in your detail-oriented 6th house, you're equipped to spin a version of the story that ensures almost everyone will take your side of the conflict. Before speaking, ask yourself about the purpose of such a tale. Keeping your head down and staying on task is also an option. Whoever is upset may not feel that way forever, so don't escalate things unnecessarily. Libra September 23 – October 22 Stewing in silence over something a significant person in your life did could be tempting today. You may believe expressing your feelings openly would cause more problems than it solved, but the bad vibes are probably less hidden than you think — particularly once seething Mars in your secretive 12th house pokes cranky Chiron in your relationship zone. What would you ask for if you weren't worried about looking good? Managing how others see you isn't always possible, but other desires might be attainable. Scorpio October 23 – November 21 A culture or belief system that's very different from your background may grab your attention without warning. As you determine what you'll do with all the information you're taking in, it'll be dangerously easy to get sucked into arguing about specific details in a way that isn't productive as defensive Mars in your community zone conflicts with anxious Chiron in your picky 6th house. You're currently better off just letting your encounter flow naturally. Gather data now, and make sense of it later. Sagittarius November 22 – December 21 The prospect of receiving public recognition could currently be enticing. However, as determined Mars in your 10th House of Reputation clashes with awkward Chiron in your self-expression sector, you may be aware that putting yourself out there would require you to share an uncomfortable amount of personal information. Perhaps you'd be happy enough to receive validation on a more intimate scale, like from the people you're already close with. Consider shifting your focus toward that goal if it's an option. Capricorn December 22 – January 19 A companion might not see eye to eye with you about money at this time. As bombastic Mars in your philosophical 9th house triggers wounded Chiron in your 4th House of Roots, keep in mind whether you and the other individual come from very different backgrounds. If so, that could mean you two learned different things regarding what it means to have a secure foundation. This gulf isn't necessarily insurmountable, but it needs to be acknowledged honestly. Recognize each person's path to the present moment. Aquarius January 20 – February 18 Coming down too hard on a sensitive subject in conversation is possible now. As probing Mars in your 8th House of Intimacy misreads guarded Chiron in your communication sector, maybe you're not really sure whether you want surface-level pleasantness or penetrating depth in your encounters with others. Just be careful to avoid giving mixed messages to the people you're chatting with throughout the day. If you're not ready to open up about a particular topic yourself, don't push anyone else to go there! Pisces February 19 – March 20 Someone else could be about to trigger insecurities concerning your finances. While reckless Mars in your relationship zone sets off sensitive Chiron in your resource sector, whatever this person says or does might not even seem that significant to them. They may not be aware of this sore spot of yours if you typically don't talk about it. That doesn't erase your pain, but it can guide your next steps. Focus on the real issues instead of lashing out at the most visible target.

Baby Hippo's Stubborn Refusal To Go Inside Is the Ultimate Toddler Moment

Baby Hippo's Stubborn Refusal To Go Inside Is the Ultimate Toddler Moment originally appeared on PetHelpful. As any pet parent, dog sitter, and vet tech knows, attitude comes in all shapes and sizes. Whether it's an angry house cat, a sassy squirrel, or a massive mad bull, animals' emotions can be just as prominent and distinct as humans'. Zookeepers know this, too! Training and raising wild animals can come with their fair share of challenges, including stubborn tantrums like this one that the @tanganyikawildlifepark shared on July 27. At the Kansas Zoo, a baby hippo named Mars gave his handler a run for her money when it was time to wind down for the day. He wasn't ready to go inside yet, and he had no qualms letting her know it! Talk about a toddler tantrum! Mars was not about to go inside without a fight, regardless of what her handler did. Whether she put him in the right direction, tempted him with a game of tag, or gently herded him toward the door, the baby animal wasn't having it. "That's the most adorable spicy potato I've ever seen!" one commenter gushed. Isn't he irresistible? Even though he's acting like a naughty little kid, he's also such a baby when his wildlife handler is Mars's latest mood may be, this 'ungovernable' zoo animal has pet parents and moms feeling seen. One mama wrote, "My toddler does that at bedtime too. Glad to know I'm not the only one dealing with this." LOL! Many pets are also experts at turning into dead weight when it's time to go somewhere they're not excited to be, but Mars takes the cake when it comes to stubbornness. Mars the Baby Hippo This adorable harbinger of chaos was born at Tanganyika Wildlife Park in late June to proud parents Posy and Pluto. Mars (whose name was likely inspired by his dad's), weighed only 13 pounds at birth, but as an adult pygmy hippopotamus, he'll weigh somewhere between 300 and 700 pounds! Luckily for the zookeepers, Mars is still small enough to be easily handled. When he's an adult, though, his stubbornness is going to be so much harder to control! Thankfully, that can be left as a problem for another day. Looking for more PetHelpful updates? Follow us on YouTube for more entertaining videos. WWE Hall of Famer Nikki Bella has revealed she suffered a painful breast implant injury during her match on this past Monday's episode of Raw. On her podcast, she detailed the incident and her determination to finish the match despite being in significant pain. The injury occurred during a massive eight-woman tag team match on the July 28th edition of Raw. This was the final Raw before this weekend's SummerSlam premium live event. "My Implant Is Stuck In My Ribs" Speaking on The Nikki & Brie Show, Nikki Bella explained that the injury happened when she took an elbow drop from Piper Niven. She immediately knew something was wrong. "Anyone see that heat spot Monday night? Piper's elbow drop? Yeah... put the implants right into the ribs," Nikki said. "It's been hard to laugh and cough, but it's okay, we're gonna get it fixed one day." Despite the pain, she continued on with the bout. "I was in pain but I didn't want the match to end," she recalled. "I think my implant is stuck in my ribs." She has since sought medical attention, confirming the implant has moved. PHILIPPE HUGUEN/AFP/Getty Images A History Of Toughness Nikki Bella's decision to finish the match is another example of the "Fearless" persona that has defined her career. Her initial retirement from wrestling was forced by a career-threatening neck injury in 2015 that required major surgery. Doctors told her she may never compete again. She defied the odds and made a miraculous, albeit part-time, comeback. Her resilience in the face of that severe neck injury became a central part of her story and cemented her reputation as one of the toughest competitors in the women's division. More news: WWE Superstar Announces Retirement Match A Trailblazer's Legacy As one-half of The Bella Twins, Nikki Bella is a trailblazer and a key figure in the "Divas Era." She is a two-time Divas Champion, and her second reign of 301 days was the longest in the title's history. Alongside her sister, Brie, she became a massive mainstream star through the hit reality shows Total Divas and Total Bellas. Her incredible career was recognized with an induction into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2020. She made her most recent surprise return to the company at the 2025 Royal Rumble. While this latest injury is an unfortunate setback, it is another chapter in the career of a true fighter. More WWE News: For more on WWE, head to Newsweek Sports.
