13-Year-Old Dies in Horrible Memorial Day Parade Accident

Memorial Day celebrations turned tragic in Ohio on Monday, as a 13-year-old boy was killed in an accident during a parade. The accident happened in the city of Green. The boy fell off a parade trailer and suffered critical injuries, according to city Communications Manager Valerie Wolford. The child was riding on a trailer being pulled by a pickup truck and fell off the front. Summit County Sheriff's Office and the City of Green say that the boy was run over after he fell off the trailer. Firefighters on scene rushed the boy to Akron's Children's Hospital, but he died as a result of his injuries. Monday's parade route began at Green High School and was planned to end at Green Intermediate School. The child's name has not been released to the public, but Wolford noted that he was a North Canton City Schools student. Memorial Day parades are held around the entire country, with the national parade taking place in Washington D.C. on Constitution Avenue. The national parade airs nationwide on broadcast television, giving millions the opportunity to join the thousands who will attend in the nation's capital. This year's national parade will include honorary marshals who served in World War II, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of the war. The surviving veterans will represent the millions who served in the war and the thousands who sacrificed their lives. The parade is held in conjunction with the American Veterans Center, which is dedicated to protecting and preserving "the legacy and experiences of America's veterans and active duty service personnel from World War II through today." Other events around the nation are intended to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, allowing Americans to enjoy many of the freedoms and luxuries that they're able to at home. Unfortunately, the city of Green and the state of Ohio will also be mourning after the tragic death of the 13-year-old boy on Monday. Rest in peace to the child killed in Monday's horrific accident, and we send condolences to his family, friends, loved ones and community during this difficult time. 13-Year-Old Dies in Horrible Memorial Day Parade Accident first appeared on Men's Journal on May 26, 2025

Living under the sea: How close are we to permanent underwater habitats?

An underwater research project is aiming to build the world's first permanent settlement beneath the ocean's surface. (Credit: DEEP) A bold underwater research project backed by an anonymous investor is aiming to push the boundaries of science and human habitation by building the world's first permanent settlement beneath the ocean's surface. Known as the DEEP project, the multi-million-dollar initiative is based in the United Kingdom and plans to establish a network of subaquatic bases called 'sentinels.' These underwater habitats will allow scientists to live and work beneath the ocean for months at a time. The project is headquartered in Gloucestershire, England, where a flooded former limestone quarry—now an 80-metre-deep lake—serves as a training site for scientists and a testing ground for submersibles. 'We need to recognize that the ocean is a critical component of our planet,' Wolford told CTV Your Morning in an interview Friday. 'It produces more than 50 per cent of the oxygen we breathe and plays a vital role in the carbon cycle. Yet, our understanding of it is still far too limited.' According to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, only about 26 per cent of the world's oceans have been properly mapped. DEEP aims to change that by placing researchers in permanent ocean habitats, giving them the ability to observe marine ecosystems continuously—something Wolford compares to the impact of the International Space Station. 'What the ISS has done for science and innovation, we believe this project can do for our understanding of the ocean,' Wolford said. 'Space exploration is vital, but we have an alien world here on Earth — the ocean. Let's explore this one first before we leave our own planet.' Wolford says the team is also studying how the human body adapts to long-term underwater living, drawing parallels to space exploration. 'What we're seeing in some cases are positive benefits, with improved health outcomes,' he said. 'The goal is to understand how our bodies evolve and adapt when exposed to new stresses.' Wolford added that daily life in the settlements will blend routine with research. 'You'd wake up, check emails, sip coffee while watching fish swim past your window. Then suit up and dive for hours to collect samples. After lunch, you'd continue work in the lab. And at night, you'd relax like anyone else—maybe watch the latest episode of White Lotus,' he said, emphasizing that this daily routine supports a much larger goal. 'If we want to become a multi-planetary species, the ocean is where we start. It's our training ground, our discovery lab, and the next frontier right here on Earth.'

Cambria County Prison celebrates new era on anniversary

EBENSBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Cambria County Prison ushered in a new era during the 30th anniversary of the facility's groundbreaking. The Cambria County Prison Board gathered outside the prison walls to commemorate the day that officials began construction on the prison on Manor Dr. Officials said that when the new facility was proposed, former commissioners lost their jobs due to the decision. 'The things that this new jail brings, at the time, weren't seen as a positive thing,' Cambria County Prison Warden Kurt Wolford said. 'But I think it's the best thing, at least in the correctional field, that's happened to Cambria County, was building this prison.' Since taking over the job in April, Wolford has made changes to prison operations. He gave administrative officers new uniforms, made new officers swearing into their positions put a hand on the Bible and put an emphasis on treatment to help reduce recidivism rates. 'It is a new day,' Wolford added. 'It's the 30-year anniversary of when this prison was built. And to me, it is also a new day at the prison. So today isn't just the anniversary, it marks a new way moving forward.' Wolford first started working in the prison in 2008 under then-warden John Prebish. Nearly 20 years later, Wolford finds himself in the same position that his late father, William Wolford, had when that groundbreaking ceremony happened three decades ago. 'I never would have thought I would be the warden in this prison,' Wolford said. 'Never. But like I say, to carry on my father's legacy means everything to me.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
