Canadian women set to square off with U.S. in AmeriCup semifinals
SANTIAGO - Canada and the United States will square off in Saturday's semifinal at the FIBA Women's AmeriCup tournament. Canada punched its ticket to the final four for a ninth consecutive time in the event with a 73-49 win over Colombia in Friday's quarterfinals. The U.S. squashed the Dominican Republic 110-44. Brazil and Argentina will meet in the other semifinal. Canada, which has a 4-1 record in the 2025 tournament, broke Friday's game wide open in the second quarter, turning a seven-point lead into a 21-point advantage at halftime. Shay Colley led Canada with 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting from two-point range, while adding eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. She now has 212 career points at the Women's AmeriCup, moving to sixth all-time among Canadians since 2003. 'We're excited about being able to move on to the next round and play in the semifinals,' said Canadian head coach Nell Fortner. 'I thought our defence was pretty strong today. There are some areas we need to clean up, but we were locked in defensively. If we can smooth out the offence (on Saturday), it'll put us in a better position.' Yvonne Ejim matched Colley's 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Kayla Alexander contributed across the board with eight points, nine rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks in the win. 'I thought we did a great job as a team coming in and applying pressure, pushing the pace at the start of the game,' said Colley. Canada dominated the glass with a 46-32 rebounding advantage and generated 15 points off 18 Colombian turnovers. Six players scored seven or more points, and the team collected 12 steals in a well-rounded defensive performance. Canada also outscored Colombia 13-4 in fast-break points and held its opponent to zero second-chance opportunities. Longhorns star Madison Booker earns special invitation from USA Basketball
Following another stellar season, Madison Booker has received a prestigious honor. The Longhorns star has been selected for the USA Basketball Women's AmeriCup team. Her latest achievement comes after three days of trials in Colorado Springs. Booker and the rest of Team USA will compete at the 2025 FIBA Women's AmeriCup, which starts later this month on June 28th. Booker will get to play alongside some of the best players in the country. That includes Raegan Beers, Mikayla Blakes, Audi Crooks, Joyce Edwards, Hannah Hidalgo, Flau'jae Johnson and Gianna Kneepkens. While this is a unique honor for Booker, it is not the first time the Longhorns forward has gotten an opportunity to shine on the world stage. Before starting her college career, the Germantown High School product won multiple gold medals with USA basketball. She was part of teams that won gold at the 2023 FIBA U19 Women's World Cup, 2022 FIBA U17 Women's World Cup, and 2021 FIBA Women's U16 Americas Championship. Booker is poised to add another medal to her trophy case. To many in Austin, Booker's latest accomplishment comes as no surprise. In 75 games for the Longhorns, she has averaged 16.4 points and 3.8 assists. The talented sophomore has also been dangerous from three-point range, with a 35.5 shooting percentage. With Booker leading the offense, Texas has been hard to stop. Due to her play, Booker has added to her trophy case. Just a few months ago, she earned First Team All-America honors. The Longhorns star was also named the SEC Player of the Year for the second time. Now, she will get to show the world why she is one of the best at her position in the nation. The tournament, which will be held in Santiago, Chile, will last until July 6.

Fever have been shorthanded in backcourt. Here's why their frontcourt depth will be tested later this month
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Fever will be lacking some post depth later this month as backup center Damiris Dantas will miss four games to play for the Brazil in the FIBA Women's AmeriCup tournament. The Fever expect Dantas to miss four games between June 25-July 8 (vs. Los Angeles, June 26; at Dallas, June 27; vs. Las Vegas, July 3; vs. Los Angeles, July 5). The AmeriCup will be in Santiago, Chile, from June 28-July 6. Dantas will miss Brazil's training camp, which starts on June 15 in Sao Paulo, because of her obligations to the Fever. She will meet the team in Chile a few days before the tournament, leaving the Fever after a three-game West Coast trip finishes in Seattle on June 24. The AmeriCup is typically played every other year, dating back to 1991. Brazil has been the most successful team in the tournament's history with six gold medals. Cardoso was the MVP of the tournament in 2023, while Dantas was named to the All-Tournament Team. On the Fever, Dantas has been the main backup for starting center Aliyah Boston this season. She is averaging 4.0 points and 2.9 rebounds in 11 minutes per game this season. In her absence, the Fever's frontcourt depth will consist of Bri Turner and rookie Makayla Timpson.
