Soccer-England win over Spain would be confidence boost ahead of Euros, says Bronze
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Women's Nations League - League A - England v Portugal - Wembley Stadium, London, Britain - May 30, 2025 England's Lucy Bronze Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Boyers/File Photo BARCELONA (Reuters) - England defender Lucy Bronze said a positive result from Tuesday's Nations League game against world champions Spain would set her team up nicely for the defence of their European Championship title. While England are coming off a 6-0 Nations League thrashing of Portugal on Friday at Wembley, Spain defeated Belgium 5-1 to remain top of the group with one game remaining. The winners of the four groups advance to the knockout finals starting in October. "(A win would give us) a lot of confidence, but we already have beaten them this year so we've got a lot of confidence from that," Bronze told reporters on Monday, referring to England's 1-0 Nations League win over the Spaniards in February. "That Spain performance from us in Wembley was brilliant. You can find things to gain confidence from. It's not the be-all and end-all (Tuesday)," she said. "In terms of the Nations League it is. (But) we might not even face Spain in the Euros. We get confidence from ourselves and others." Tuesday's match in Barcelona is England's last before manager Sarina Wiegman announces her European Championship squad on Thursday. "We are pretty close (to finalising the squad)," Wiegman said. "Still you want to go to the game tomorrow and then make the final decisions, but we are pretty close." The one big Euros question mark is the fitness of Chelsea striker Lauren James, who has not played since suffering a hamstring injury in April. "We're trying to get her fit. She's trying to get fit with all the support from Chelsea and us. She is doing really well," Wiegman said. "She needs to tick some boxes and progress. We need her to be fit and healthy and perform at her highest level." Wiegman is also without defender Millie Bright, who withdrew from camp for an extended period saying she was "mentally and physically" at her limit. "Millie is a real big personality and big player for England and Chelsea," Bronze said. "She's missed with what she brings on and off the pitch. We want to make sure she's OK both physically and mentally. She's someone who's quite tough and it's brave that she came out and spoke.." England kick off their European Championship campaign in Switzerland against France on July 5. (Reporting by Lori Ewing, editing by Ed Osmond)

'We should be having goal-line technology' Jess Fishlock on Denmark game
Wales suffered Women's Nations League relegation after losing 1-0 away to Denmark in controversial fashion in Group A4. Rhian Wilkinson's team realistically required victory in Odense to avoid being sent down to League B but Pernille Harder's 48th-minute strike consigned them to a third defeat of the campaign and bottom spot. It could have been a different story had Jess Fishlock's first-half effort been awarded, with her follow-up shot seemingly crossing the line but not given by the officials and with no VAR in operation, Wales went down narrowly. Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, she said "We should be having goal-line technology because it's so obviously a goal "It needs to be better. At this level, we need the technology and we need everything to ensure that it's fair." A 2-1 home loss to Denmark in April put Wales on the verge of relegation from the top tier and they got off to a poor start on Friday with defender Mayzee Davies forced off after only six minutes. The 18-year-old sustained a knee issue which could put in doubt her participation in this summer's European Championship. The early change rocked Wales as Harder headed against the crossbar soon after before Olivia Clark was required to make two saves in quick succession. Wales did regroup and a moment of controversy occurred midway through the half when Ceri Holland was denied by Maja Bay Ostergaard and Fishlock sent an effort towards goal, but Stine Ballisager got back to clear. Replays later appeared to show the ball had crossed the line, but it remained goalless at the break after Amalie Vangsgaard squandered a fine opportunity for Denmark and Harder was twice thwarted in quick succession. It would not take Harder long after half-time to break the deadlock, though, as the Danish forward slotted home in the 48th minute. Wilkinson's side responded well with a Fishlock header sent over before Holland had a shot saved by Ostergaard. Hannah Cain and Rachel Rowe were introduced, but Wales failed to find a leveller and relegation to League B was confirmed.

Germany qualify, England hit six in Women's Nations League
Aggie Beever-Jones (number 9) is mobbed by her England teammates after completing her Wembley hat-trick (Ben STANSALL) Germany joined already qualified France in the Women's Nations League semi-finals as England knocked Portugal for six at Wembley on Friday. Euro 2022 champions England shrugged off the shock international retirement of Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Mary Earps this week to sweep aside Portugal 6-0 and set up a tantalising decider for Sarina Wiegman's side in the final group game against world champions Spain in Barcelona on Tuesday. Advertisement Spain eased past Belgium 5-1 and top their group by two points from England with only the winner of the four top-tier mini-leagues advancing to the semi-finals in October. Germany booked their ticket to the two-legged semis with a 4-0 rout of the Netherlands. That left them three points clear of the Dutch. In the event of the two sides ending up level after Tuesday's closing games the Germans will go through on the basis of their head-to-head results - they drew when they met in the opening game in February. At Wembley the star of the show was Aggie Beever-Jones, who will forever remember her first ever start at the iconic stadium. Advertisement The Chelsea forward scored in the third minute, again in the 26th with a header from Lucy Bronze's cross, and then completed her treble in the 33rd minute. "I'm absolutely shattered," the 21-year-old Beever-Jones told ITV. "Coming into this today after a busy season and I got told I was starting and I wanted to help the team as much as I can. I'm absolutely delighted right now," she added. Joining her on the scoresheet were her club teammate Bronze, whose father is Portuguese, the Euro 2022 Golden Boot winner Beth Mead, and Chloe Kelly. France, who secured their path to the semi-finals on the last matchday, maintained their perfect record beating Switzerland, hosts of July's Euro 2025, 4-0 in Nancy. Advertisement Les Bleues were runners-up to Spain in last year's final. At Euro 2025 their group stage opponents include defending champions England and 2017 winners Netherlands. Group A4 meanwhile is finely poised, with Sweden and Denmark, who meet on the final matchday, level on nine points, two clear of out of contention Italy. As well as defining the make-up of the Nations League semi-finals the group standings also determine the teams contesting promotion and relegation matches to establish their starting league position in the European qualifiers for the 2027 Women's World Cup. nr/mw
