International cricket to debut at New Chandigarh stadium with Ind vs Aus women series in Sept

Over a year after its completion and hosting two IPL seasons, the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium in New Chandigarh is finally set to make its international debut. Having missed out on hosting the upcoming ICC Women's World Cup matches, the stadium will serve as the venue for first two one-day international (ODI) games of the India vs Australia three-match women's series to be played on September 14 and 17, respectively. Meanwhile, the third ODI tie will be held at the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) Arun Jaitley stadium on September 20. Earlier, the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai was to organise all three ODIs of the series, but due to the revamp work of its outfield, the matches have been moved out. The development comes as a fresh breeze for PCA, as BCCI had recently removed its New Chandigarh stadium as one of the venues during the upcoming ICC Women's World Cup, beginning in September-end. The PCA stadium in Mohali's Phase 9 had last hosted some T20 Women's World Cup matches in 2016. After a gap of nine years, international women's cricket will return to the region, with the twin ODIs featuring India and Australia women. This series will act as a preparation for both the teams for the World Cup. The ICC Women's ODI World Cup will be held at four venues across India. Pakistan will play all their matches at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The New Chandigarh stadium had recently successfully hosted Qualifier 1 and Eliminator during the IPL, which Royal Bengaluru Challengers (RCB) eventually won in Ahmedabad. Completed in February 2024, the New Chandigarh stadium was allotted these IPL games due to the one-week break in the tournament and onset of early monsoon. Otherwise other venues were supposed to stage these IPL play-offs. Before the play-offs, the New Chandigarh stadium also hosted four Punjab Kings (PBKS) home league matches in April. Later this year, the same stadium will also organise a T20I game between India and South Africa on December 11.

Mullanpur to host 2 of women's ODI matches against Australia in September

In a first, the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA International Cricket Stadium at Mullanpur will play host to the first two women's ODI matches of the three-match women's ODI series between India and Australia to be played in September later this year. While the stadium had been allocated its first International fixture earlier in April in the form of the second T20I between India and South Africa to be played on December 11 later this year, it will be the first time that the stadium will host international women's ODI matches. The opening and second women's ODI of the three-match India Australia women's ODI series will be played at the stadium on September 14 and September 17 respectively. 'Due to the revamping of the outfield and pitches at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the IDFC First Bank ODI Series between Team India (Senior Women) and Australia Women has been moved from Chennai. The first two ODIs will now take place at the New PCA stadium in New Chandigarh, while the third and final ODI will be held at the Arun Jaitley stadium in New Delhi,' the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement. While there were media reports about the 38,000 capacity stadium playing host to the final of the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup earlier, it was not confirmed by BCCI. Earlier this month, BCCI had chosen five venues including Colombo in Sri Lanka to host matches in the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup to be played from September 30 to November 2 but the Mullanpur Stadium was not chosen as one of the venues. It will also be the first time that the likes of Indian women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Bhullar, who belongs to Punjab, is expected to play an international match at Mullanpur stadium with the Indian women's team for the series yet to be announced. The 40-acre stadium, which has new facilities like herringbone drainage system, a sand field, international-grade dressing rooms, steam, sauna, and ice bath facilities, and a world-class gym apart from 49 corporate boxes, has hosted a total of 11 IPL matches since it started hosting IPL matches last year. It also includes four matches in this year's IPL apart from the two IPL play-offs matches played at the stadium this IPL.

ICC Women's ODI World Cup to kick off on September 30; five venues selected for eight-team tournament

Dubai [UAE], June 2 (ANI): The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday announced the dates and venues for the upcoming ICC Women's ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka. The 13th edition of the tournament will run from September 30 until November 2, with five venues across India and Sri Lanka selected for the eight-team marquee event. The venues include M Chinnaswamy Stadium (Bengaluru), ACA Stadium (Guwahati), Holkar Stadium (Indore), ACA-VDCA Stadium (Visakhapatnam), and R. Premdasa Stadium (Colombo). As the Women's Cricket World Cup returns to India after 12 years, the tournament will kick off with a pulsating clash featuring India in Bengaluru on September 30. The first semi-final will be held in either Guwahati or Colombo on October 29, with the second semi-final to be played the following day, October 30, in Bengaluru. The two finalists will have at least two days to prepare for the title decider, with the competition's final will be held in Bengaluru or Colombo on November 2. Considering the two venues selected for the knockouts, it is expected that Pakistan's qualification will determine the first semi-final and final venues. Pakistan's women's team booked its berth in the marquee event by staying unbeaten in April in the ICC Women's ODI World Cup Qualifiers. Pakistan hosted the qualifiers and won all five matches, securing a World Cup spot. Bangladesh became the second team to qualify for the tournament, quashing the hopes of Ireland, Scotland, the West Indies, and Thailand to feature in the tournament. After securing their qualification, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that Pakistan will play its matches at a neutral venue following the acceptance of the hybrid model agreement earlier this year. Eight teams will compete for the coveted title in the Women's World Cup: India, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Australia, which will enter the event as the reigning champions, having defeated England in the final of the most recent Women's World Cup in New Zealand in 2022, will be hopeful about defending its crown. Australia's women's team is the most successful team in tournament history, having been crowned champions for a record seven times. (ANI)
