Jeff Stelling couldn't resist taking Rangers parting shot with Celtic comment on Sky Sports

It has been two years since the iconic Jeff Stelling bid farewell to Sky Sports, and the former Soccer Saturday host made sure to go out with a parting Celtic quip at the expense of Rangers Jeff Stelling left Sky Sports two years ago to the day, but not without a quick Celtic jibe aimed at Rangers. It has now been 24 months since Sky stalwart Stelling stepped down from Soccer Saturday hosting duties and said his goodbyes, having been part of the broadcaster's furniture since 1992. ‌ The Englishman, who had dedicated 30 years of his life to the revered programme, went out on this day in 2023 to a standing ovation, but not before leaving a parting gift for Rangers, as he alluded to Celtic's dominance in both the men's and women's game. ‌ Stelling's final show took place on the Sunday, and he, along with colleagues Paul Merson, Clinton Morrison, Kris Boyd, and Matt Dawson, covered the final weekend of that year's Premier League season. Also on that afternoon was the Women's Scottish Cup final, where Celtic Women faced off against their bitter Glaswegian rivals, Rangers Women. Fran Alonso's side took a 2-0 lead into the closing stages, and Stelling couldn't help but allude to Celtic's dominance within the men's game too. Before Stelling could receive a standing ovation from those in the Soccer Sunday studio and bid goodbye, he touched on the cup final scoreline and took a jibe about Celtic's men lifting the Scottish Championship the weekend prior. "It's the Women's Scottish Cup final as well, and like the Scottish Premiership, to be honest, it's going Celtic's way," admitted Stelling as his final appearance drew to a close. ‌ After this admission, things would get even better for Ange Postecoglou's men's side, as just a week later, they would win the Scottish Cup themselves, sealing a historic domestic treble with a victory against Inverness. For Stelling, that final programme would mark the end of a storied career, and he made sure to thank all those who helped him over the course of decades as he bowed out. "It's a team game, right from the people in the call centres who take your calls to the runners, the production team, the people behind the cameras," began Stelling. "Everyone I've worked with over the past 30 years, I'd like to thank you for that. It's not just on this show; I just want to mention the people in the winning post, the horse racing paper I worked on for many years. "Times of Our Lives, which I adored doing, the live snooker, darts, greyhound racing, pool. It's been absolutely wonderful, it's been the best job anyone could wish for. "The principal success is you lot at home. Soccer Saturday will be back and I'll be watching - when Hartlepool are not playing," he concluded.

Ross: Glasgow City still disappointed to miss out on title objective

Leanne Ross insists Glasgow City are just as disappointed as Rangers in losing out on the SWPL title as the sides prepare to meet in the Women's Scottish Cup final. Rangers lost 1-0 to Hibernian at Ibrox on Sunday to hand the Edinburgh outfit their first title in 18 years and to add to their misery, City's convincing 2-0 home win over Hearts took them above Jo Potter's side and into second place with a Champions League spot as a reward. Speaking at the national stadium, Ross was 'unsure' if City, who last won the trophy in 2019, had a mental advantage over their opponents going into the showpiece at Hampden Park on Sunday, but admits her side fell just short of their pre-season aims. The former Glasgow City midfielder said: 'Obviously, we're both very disappointed in terms of that objective of winning the league this season. 'It was a tight fight between all teams in the top half of the table. It was a difficult season. 'And obviously, neither of us have reached the objective of winning the title. 'So the next best thing for us was obviously that second place and guaranteed European football. 'So yes, we've come out on top there, but there's still disappointment within our camp that we never achieved our overall objective of winning the league.' While Potter told her players not to 'sulk' in the wake of their disappointment at the weekend, Ross revealed a 'real excitement' in Glasgow City's training ground as the players battle for starting places at Hampden, which will host the final for the third successive season. She said: 'The players know there are jerseys to play for in terms of that starting line-up, so we're trying to keep them calm and keep their feet on the ground so that the preparations are right. 'But there's definitely an excitement about the place ahead of the game.' The Scottish Women's Premier League (SWPL) season will reach another exciting conclusion this week as both Rangers and Hibs go head-to-head in a do-or-die battle at Ibrox. With just one final league game remaining in the top tier, it is Hibs that currently sit top of the league after a monumental season for Grant Scott's side, though Jo Potter's Rangers are just behind them in second and eyeing a historic domestic treble for the first time in their history. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad One of the most hard-fought title races in the league's history, it will be the third season in a row that the title will be decided on the final day of the campaign, with the two previous campaigns seeing both Glasgow City and Celtic claim the league title via last minute goals. It will also be the second time in three years that the title has been decided at Ibrox, with the Gers set to return to the iconic stadium for the fourth time this term in their final game as they welcome their Edinburgh counterparts to Govan. Kick off is scheduled for 12pm this Sunday (May 18). Looking to tune into the SWPL title race this Sunday? Here are all the permutations heading into the season finale: Hibs are in pole position to win the Scottish Women's Premier League title at Ibrox. | SNS Group What do Rangers Women need to do to win the SWPL? The task for Rangers is pretty simple this weekend. If they beat Hibs at Ibrox, they will win the title on goal difference ahead of their opponents, and Glasgow City. There is currently a 48-goal cap between the sides, with Rangers goal difference standing at +113 to Hibs +68. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Should Rangers secure only their second SWPL title in history with victory over Hibs, they'll be on course to win a historic domestic treble, with their Women's Scottish Cup final against Glasgow City set to be played at Hampden Park on May 25. They have already won the Sky Sports Cup earlier this year, after beating Hibs 5-0 at Fir Park. What do Hibs Women need to do to win the SWPL? As above, the situation is straightforward for Hibs this weekend, with Grant Scott's side currently top of the table. Avoid defeat to Rangers at Ibrox, and they will win their fourth SWPL title in history, and their first since 2007. The second most successful team in Scottish Women's football, should Hibs win the title on Sunday, it will be their 18th trophy win in the club's history. Glasgow City are effectively out of the Scottish Women's Premier League title race. Cr: SNS Group. | SNS Group / SFA Can Glasgow City still win the SWPL title? While Leanne Ross' side still mathematically stand a chance of winning the title, they would require Hibs to lose to Rangers this weekend and somehow overturn a 25-goal swing on goal difference. In reality, Glasgow City are out of the title race. Who won the SWPL title last year?
