SASSA empowers women with leadership training

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has officially launched the fourth intake of its Women in Leadership Development Programme, a strategic initiative designed to strengthen gender representation and leadership capacity within the public service. Launched on June 24, the programme will see 120 women in middle and senior management positions undergo six months of leadership training. The goal is to empower women with the strategic, emotional, and operational skills required to succeed in complex government environments. Sassa CEO Themba Matlou, in his keynote address, reaffirmed the agency's commitment to gender transformation. 'It is not a favour; it is an obligation. We must create space and provide resources for women to lead. Our data shows we are doing well at entry levels, but numbers drop at the top. That must change,' said Matlou. He emphasised that leadership development, particularly for women, is integral to Sassa's broader five-year strategy, which includes improving organisational efficiency, enhancing service delivery and reducing poverty. 'An organisation has the responsibility to train, empower and motivate its people. Well-equipped staff translates into improved customer experiences and stronger community impact,' he added.
