UOB Empowers Thai Youth for Green Innovation
UOB Thailand has launched Wonder Lab: Youth for a Greener Tomorrow, an initiative empowering young people to lead environmental change through creativity, innovation, and community action. The programme builds on the success of Waste to Wonder, an internal campaign that mobilised UOB employees to reduce landfill waste. Now, the Bank is extending its impact to the wider community, reflecting its belief that meaningful change begins with people—and that youth are already shaping the future. Launched at Global Compact Network Thailand (GCNT) Expo 2025, in collaboration with Mindventure, Wonder Lab programme invited youth aged 17-25 to submit environmental project proposals addressing environmental challenges in their communities. A total of 102 teams comprising 453 students from across the country submitted ideas that were thoughtful, creative and deeply personal. Ten finalist teams were selected to join an intensive workshop, working alongside sustainability mentors and subject-matter experts to refine their project designs, strengthen community engagement strategies and develop implementation plans. Ms Dhornratana Olanhankij, Country Head of Brand, Media and Communications, UOB Thailand, said, 'Wonder Lab is a reflection of a powerful shift we're witnessing—young people are no longer waiting to be invited into the conversation; they are already leading it. We believe that real progress happens when we listen, support and co-create with the next generation. This initiative goes beyond sustainability—it's about enabling youth to shape solutions that matter to their communities today, while building the foundations for a more resilient and inclusive future. By investing in their ideas and leadership, we are investing in the future of Thailand.' Throughout August, the finalist teams are implementing their projects, turning classroom concepts into real-world sustainability solutions. Highlights include: Developing eco-friendly cat litter alternatives Converting e-waste and cardboard into air purifiers Repurposing plastic waste into 3D printing materials and woven fabrics Using gamification to promote sustainable behaviours Tackling waste in the Mekong River through behavioural change Turning agricultural waste into training cones for young athletes Reducing food waste on university campuses through awareness campaigns Ms Chanakarn Kachonseree, Co-Founder and CEO, Mindventure, which was recognised in Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia for social impact added, 'Young people have immense potential to drive change – if given the opportunity. The Wonder Lab gives them the tools, mentorship, and platform to explore their ideas and bring them to life. We are honoured to partner with UOB in making this vision a reality.' One of the finalist teams, Trashformers, whose team is transforming e-waste and carton waste into air purifiers, shared 'We saw a surge in cardboard waste from online shopping and wanted to explore how it could be repurposed to benefit the environment,' the team shared. 'Our project combines upcycling with e-waste innovation to help reduce pollution. This journey has taught us that environmental problems are everywhere—and change begins with simply paying attention. Even small actions can grow into meaningful impact.' The programme will culminate in a showcase of project outcomes on 13 September 2025 at UOB Plaza Bangkok, celebrating the creativity and commitment of Thailand's youth.
