Wonders of Wildlife releases 19 rehabilitated sea turtles off of Florida coast

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — On Wednesday, March 25, Wonders of Wildlife (WOW) released 19 sea turtles they rehabilitated at their Sea Turtle Center back into the ocean. The sea turtles were cleared to return to their ocean home after WOW's Sea Turtle Center cared for them for 13 weeks. They were released off the coast of Little Talbot Island State Park near Jacksonville, Florida. According to Wonders of Wildlife, they received the 19 sea turtles from the New England Aquarium in Boston in December 2024: 12 loggerhead sea turtles and seven Kemp's ridley sea turtles, which are both considered endangered species. Major work happening on Target's new Springfield store The sea turtles suffered from cold-stunning, a condition caused by a rapid decrease in ocean temperatures, causing the turtles to catch pneumonia, hypothermia, dehydration and other health problems. Local students were even involved in WOW's rescue efforts, playing a part in naming the sea turtles and receiving educational presentations on sea turtle conservation. Wonders of Wildlife says their Sea Turtle Center has now rehabilitated and released 64 sea turtles since 2020. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
