Gunshots fired during arrest attempt in Beaufort
KOTA KINABALU: Gunshots were fired, sparking a 10km chase when three suspected drug dealers tried to run over police officers during a raid in the Beaufort district. The suspects, travelling in a single vehicle, refused to stop when police officers attempted to pull them over after intercepting their car along Jalan Membakut around 4.15AM on Friday (July 4). Beaufort OCPD Supt. Wong Leong Meng stated that during the raid, known as Ops Gempur, the officers shouted 'police' at the suspects, instructing them to exit the vehicle. However, the driver accelerated forward, nearly hitting the officers. In response, the police were compelled to fire several shots at the car's front tyres to protect themselves. A chase ensued, ultimately concluding when the suspects' vehicle was intercepted once again near Kampung Lumat, approximately 10km away. The suspects exited the car and attempted to flee into a nearby bushy area, resulting in the arrest of two individuals. One suspect managed to escape. The two apprehended suspects, aged 18 and 29, were found in possession of a total of 51.28g of syabu (methamphetamine), valued at RM3,800. The drugs were discovered in the pocket of one suspect's pants. Both individuals were taken to the police station to aid in the investigation, and the drugs, vehicle and cell phones were confiscated. One of the suspects had four previous drug-related convictions, while the teenager had a clean record. Both are being detained under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Supt Wong mentioned that a manhunt had been launched to locate the escaped suspect and called on the public to assist the police by providing any information that could aid in capturing the suspect and solving this case.

Drug traffickers try to ram police, two arrested in Sabah
BEAUFORT: Police were forced to open fire on a car's tyres after three suspected drug traffickers attempted to flee during a pre-dawn raid, nearly ramming into officers in the process. The incident occurred at 4.15am on Friday along Jalan Membakut during 'Op Gempur', an operation conducted by the Beufort district police's Narcotics Crime Investigation Division. District police chief Superintendent Wong Leong Meng said the suspects' vehicle was initially intercepted by police, who identified themselves by shouting "police". "However, the driver responded aggressively by accelerating the vehicle towards the raiding team, nearly hitting them. "In self-defence, officers were forced to fire several shots at the car's tyres," he said when contacted today. He said the suspects' car was later found by the roadside along the Pan Borneo Highway near Kampung Lumat. "The three suspects attempted to flee into nearby bushes, but two were apprehended while one remains at large. "The two arrested suspects are aged 18 and 29," he said. Further investigation led to the discovery of a cigarette box containing 51.28 grammes of methamphetamine worth RM3,800, found in one of the suspects' trouser pockets. Police also seized the car, a key, and several mobile phones to assist in the investigation. "Checks showed that one of the suspects has four prior drug-related offences, while the other has no criminal record. "Both suspects have been remanded and are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 307 of the Penal Code," he added. Meanwhile, Wong said police are still tracking down the third suspect and working to identify the source of the drug supply linked to the group.

Beaufort hit by 8th flood since March, residents urged to stay alert
Published on: Saturday, May 03, 2025 Published on: Sat, May 03, 2025 By: Ahmad Apong Text Size: BEAUFORT: Floodwaters have once again inundated low-lying areas of Beaufort, with water levels exceeding the danger mark, prompting authorities to warn residents to remain cautious and prepare for evacuation. District police chief Supt Wong Leong Meng said flood levels reached 9.58 metres at 10am today, surpassing the danger level of 8.70 metres, according to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS). The flooding is due to heavy rain in Keningau, Tenom, and Beaufort. Several areas in the old town, including the post office, railway station, and petrol stations, have been submerged. Fire and Rescue Station chief Ishak Jabas reported that villages including Kg Batu 60, Kg Bekalau, Kg Bingkul, Kg Suasa, Kg Lago, and Kg Kangsa are affected. Roads in these areas are also flooded, and evacuations to the Selagon relief centre are underway. He noted this is the eighth flood since March. More villages near the Padas River are expected to be affected as waters flow downstream. Ishak advised residents to avoid wading through floodwaters barefoot, keep children away from flood zones, and store important documents in waterproof containers. Residents were urged to follow rescue teams' instructions and not refuse evacuation offers, as delayed rescue operations may risk lives. In Membakut, no official evacuations have been made yet, though Kampung Brunei has seen rising water levels due to the overflowing Sungai Membakut. In Sipitang, flooding from Sungai Meligan has blocked vehicle crossings, with villagers relying on a nearby suspension bridge. Local leaders have called for longer-term solutions, including elevated bridges to prevent future disruption. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ‘Please take care of my child': Newborn left in box with towel, limes and a mother's plea in Membakut
KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 — A newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a box outside a house in Kampung Brunei, Membakut, Sabah early yesterday morning. A handwritten note on the lid of the box read: 'There is my child in this box. Please take care of my child. May you be blessed.' Beaufort District Police Chief Superintendent Wong Leong Meng told Harian Metro that police were alerted by a witness who found the baby. Initial investigations revealed the witness had woken around 5.40am and noticed a white motorcycle — exact make unknown — with a registration plate beginning with the letter 'V' circling in front of the house. Nothing appeared suspicious at the time. 'The witness looked out through a window and saw the motorcyclist leave shortly after,' Wong said. 'At about 6.10am, while preparing to leave for work, the witness spotted a box at the front door. 'Upon inspection, he found a baby wrapped in a towel along with some limes.' The baby was taken to the Paediatrics Ward at Beaufort Hospital for further treatment. 'She is estimated to be about 36 weeks old. Hospital staff have collected a blood sample for a paternity test,' Wong added. Police are now working to identify and locate the child's mother. The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for baby abandonment. Anyone with information is urged to contact Investigating Officer Inspector Muhammad Hafizuddin Mohd Tarmizi at 012-4175332 or report to the nearest police station.
