Apr 19, 2025 In a groundbreaking move towards inclusivity, Abu Dhabi has officially opened the UAE's first beach specifically designed for visually impaired individuals and their families. Located on the Corniche, this new 1,000-square-meter space is tailored to provide a safe and accessible environment for everyone, with a particular focus on those with visual impairments. The initiative, launched by the Abu Dhabi City Municipality in partnership with the Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination, is aligned with the announcement of 2025 as the Year of the Community by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This beach aims to promote social integration and empower visually impaired individuals by providing equal access to recreational opportunities. Equipped with state-of-the-art security features, accessibility tools, and various amenities, the beach is set to become a symbol of Abu Dhabi's commitment to building an inclusive society. In recognition of its design, the World Disability Union has awarded the beach the title of 'Disability-Friendly Beach,' highlighting its adherence to international accessibility standards. Open daily from 6 am to midnight, with swimming allowed until sunset, the beach offers a variety of services, including a specially designed vehicle service for People of Determination, paved guidance paths, Braille signage, and a lifeguard-supervised swimming area. Visitors can also enjoy free beach access for themselves and an accompanying person, as well as complimentary transport services. To further enhance accessibility, the beach also offers dedicated restrooms, floating chairs for those with disabilities, and reserved parking spaces.

The initiative, led by Abu Dhabi City Municipality in collaboration with the Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination, is a landmark achievement inspired by the announcement of 2025 as the Year of the Community by the President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Fully equipped with security features, accessibility tools, and recreational amenities, the beach aims to create an inclusive space that encourages social integration and empowers individuals with visual impairments. It also reflects the government's broader commitment to fostering a cohesive society built on equality, dignity, and shared responsibility. International recognition Reinforcing Abu Dhabi's reputation for world-class infrastructure, the beach has been recognised by the World Disability Union with a 'Disability-Friendly Beach' award—underscoring its adherence to global standards for accessibility and inclusion. The beach will be open from 6am until midnight, with swimming allowed from 6am until sunset. Regarding safety and security measures, the Municipality emphasised that the beach area has been specially designed to cater to the needs of visually impaired visitors, offering a safe, independent swimming experience that does not require external assistance, all while maintaining the highest safety standards. In addition, first aid services will be available on-site throughout operating hours, provided by a licensed nurse. Tailored services The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City noted that the designated beach area includes several tailored services for the visually impaired, such as: A dedicated vehicle service for People of Determination to facilitate easy transportation to the site Specially paved guidance paths designed for the visually impaired A Braille signage board containing swimming area instructions A fenced walkway with a guiding rope and alert bells running along its length, providing audible cues leading to the water A swimming area supervised by a lifeguard to ensure safety A Braille-printed service guide to offer a complete, accessible experience for visually impaired visitors of all ages, enabling them to enjoy moments of joy, recreation, and swimming in a safe, supportive environment Additionally, the beach offers a range of services designed to enhance the experience for visually impaired visitors, including: Free beach access for People of Determination and one accompanying person Accessible pathways for People of Determination and the elderly Dedicated restrooms for People of Determination Floating chairs for beachgoers with disabilities Free drinking water coolers Complimentary transportation services for People of Determination and the elderly Reserved parking spaces for People of Determination
