Watch: Abu Dhabi Opens UAE's First Beach Area For Visually Impaired
A new chapter in inclusive public spaces was written this week as Abu Dhabi officially opened the UAE's first dedicated beach area for the visually impaired and their families.
Located on the Corniche near Gate 3, the 1,000-square-metre space has been specially designed to offer a safe, accessible, and welcoming environment for a cherished segment of the community.
The initiative, led by Abu Dhabi City Municipality in collaboration with the Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination, is a landmark achievement inspired by the announcement of 2025 as the Year of the Community by the President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Fully equipped with security features, accessibility tools, and recreational amenities, the beach aims to create an inclusive space that encourages social integration and empowers individuals with visual impairments. It also reflects the government's broader commitment to fostering a cohesive society built on equality, dignity, and shared responsibility.
International recognition
Reinforcing Abu Dhabi's reputation for world-class infrastructure, the beach has been recognised by the World Disability Union with a 'Disability-Friendly Beach' award—underscoring its adherence to global standards for accessibility and inclusion.
The beach will be open from 6am until midnight, with swimming allowed from 6am until sunset.
Regarding safety and security measures, the Municipality emphasised that the beach area has been specially designed to cater to the needs of visually impaired visitors, offering a safe, independent swimming experience that does not require external assistance, all while maintaining the highest safety standards. In addition, first aid services will be available on-site throughout operating hours, provided by a licensed nurse.

The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City noted that the designated beach area includes several tailored services for the visually impaired, such as: A dedicated vehicle service for People of Determination to facilitate easy transportation to the site
Specially paved guidance paths designed for the visually impaired
A Braille signage board containing swimming area instructions
A fenced walkway with a guiding rope and alert bells running along its length, providing audible cues leading to the water
A swimming area supervised by a lifeguard to ensure safety
A Braille-printed service guide to offer a complete, accessible experience for visually impaired visitors of all ages, enabling them to enjoy moments of joy, recreation, and swimming in a safe, supportive environment
Additionally, the beach offers a range of services designed to enhance the experience for visually impaired visitors, including: Free beach access for People of Determination and one accompanying person

Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre Launches Index to Measure Community Connection with Arabic
Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC) has introduced an innovative index designed to evaluate the community's engagement with the Arabic language. This initiative aligns with the UAE's proclamation of 2025 as the 'Year of the Community.' According to Bahrain News Agency, the index employs a statistical model to monitor the development of individuals' connections to Arabic across personal, familial, and institutional dimensions. It gathers empirical data on language use in various aspects such as reading, writing, speaking, and digital communication, with a particular emphasis on its use within families, especially involving children. The purpose of the index is to assess community interaction with the Arabic language and to support its promotion. It also examines institutional backing through ALC initiatives that include book publishing, creative content development, talent nurturing, skill-building, literary festivals, and awards. Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the ALC, highlighted that the index embodies the leadership's vision to foster a cohesive society and strengthen national and cultural identity. He emphasized that since its inception, the Centre has been committed to connecting society to the Arabic language across creative, knowledge-based, and cultural fields, engaging both Arabic speakers and non-speakers. The index will be applied to residents of Abu Dhabi across different demographic segments, resulting in values that indicate the level of engagement, from full connection to complete detachment. This aims to guide policy and coordinate future initiatives. The launch of this new index coincided with the announcement of the 2025 results of the Arabic Language Perception Index, which has been assessing public sentiment since 2021 regarding Arabic in comparison with English. The survey includes more than 6,000 individuals aged 15 and above. The findings revealed that Arabic scored highest in areas of creativity, such as language aesthetics and content, and culture, particularly heritage. In contrast, English led in the knowledge category, especially in scientific content. Dr. bin Tamim remarked that while speakers of each language believe in the prominence of their own, understanding how perceptions evolve over time necessitates more profound social and linguistic study. He added that the indicators will bolster efforts to enhance Arabic's role as a language of science, culture, and creativity, and to expand its presence in digital content and scientific research.
