Indian Embassy screens short anti-drugs film ‘Paru'
Muscat – Indian Embassy in Muscat hosted a screening of Paru on Monday in the presence of H E GV Srinivas, Indian Ambassador to Oman, as chief guest, and Omani actor Talib al Balushi as guest of honour. Paru is a short film made as part of the World Malayalee Federation's anti-drug campaign. Written and directed by Kabeer Yousuf, Paru tells the story of an Indian couple living in a Gulf state whose drug-addicted teenage son dies prematurely. The tragedy pushes the mother into mental distress, requiring treatment, while the father struggles to cope with his disturbed personal and professional life. The narrative unfolds as a journey through grief, struggle and rediscovery of love. Produced by Ameen Mohammed and Sajimon George under the banner of Bhavalaya, the 37-minute film explores the emotional burden of drug abuse, particularly on mothers who often suffer in silence. Oman-based actors Anita Rajan and Somasundaram play the lead roles, supported by Kiran Hariprasad, Ashok Kumar, Ryan George and Vishruth. The film also features students from Thalassery Brennan HSS in Kerala. Dr J Ratnakumar, founder of Bhavalaya and Global Chairman of World Malayalee Federation, said, 'As an organisation active in Oman for over a decade, our efforts have always aimed to bring people together through art, literature and film.' The film's cinematography, editing and makeup are credited to Vishnu Venugopal, Jaffer PC and Azra Aleem respectively.

Indian expat bags literature award
Muscat: J Retnakumar, an Oman-based senior insurance professional and socio-cultural personality, has been selected to the coveted London Malayalam Sahitya Vedi Award. The UK based award is given to exceptional individuals and associations in honour of their contributions to the field of art, literature and culture Dr Retnakumar, who is also the Global Chairman of the World Malayalee Federation, a network of like-minded people from across the world, has been selected for the award instituted by the London Malayalam Sahitya Vedi in recognition of his contributions to the field of art, literature and culture. The other awardees are renowned journalist, writer and teacher Prof Madavana Balakrishna Pillai and Dr Aji Peter, a renowned figure in the arts and culture sector in the UK. The awards will be presented on April 12, 2025 at 4 pm at the IMA Hall, Kottayam, in the presence of prominent political and social leaders at the Awards Evening 2025, presided over by London Malayalam Sahitya Vedi General Coordinator Raji Nandhikat. The communique released by the comittee related to the award stated that "Dr J Retnakumar, who has many achievements in the insurance sector, has bagged several awards in diverse fields. He has been an active presence in the socio-cultural arena of Oman and India for several decades. A leader of several social empowerment movements, he is currently a member of the Loka Kerala Sabha, the President of the Malayalam Mission Oman Chapter and the Global Chairman of the World Malayali Federation." The statenent further says that Dr J Retnakumar's leadership and involvement, which is rooted in humanity and creativity, have benefited many people and the growth of the organisation. The contributions he is making to the field of art through the "Bhavalaya" movement are commendable. We wish him continued success in these endeavors. Responding to the announcement, Dr J Retnakumar said that this is a proud moment for the World Malayali Federation and to the members spread across the world.
