Alison grabs two golds, two bronzes: ‘I could have done better'

Published on: Friday, May 23, 2025 Published on: Fri, May 23, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: Alison showing off her medals. Kota Kinabalu: Dr Alison Chew captured two gold and two bronze medals at the ongoing World Masters Games 2025 in Taipei, Taiwan. The Sabahan, who took part in the women's 40s age group, crossed the line first in the 100 metres (m) (13.29 seconds [s]) and 400m hurdles (76.73s) events and the bronzes from the 200m (27.76s) and 400m (64.74s). Despite her biggest medal haul on the international stage against some of the world's best athletes, she was still feeling a bit disappointed with the times achieved. 'I am obviously happy to deliver the medals for the contingent but at the same time, I was not fully satisfied with the time I managed. 'I believe I could have done better. I have been training for the 400m and 400m hurdles for the past four months prior to the competition. 'My initial aim was to run at least personal best times in the two events at the championship. However, two weeks before the release of the games startlist, my coach (Fahrul Nazri) and I decided to change our target and instead aim for more medals instead. Advertisement 'It was a risk I took with the two additional events because it involved me running in heats and finals for four consecutive days. 'It was quite exhausting and as a result, the times achieved was no to my liking, but still good enough to put me on the podium, with the gold medals won on the first two days and the two bronzes coming in the next two days,' she said on Wednesday. The Taipei trip was her second competition outside of Asean, having competed in the World Masters Athletics Championship (WMAC) in Gothenburg, Sweden in August last year. She managed to qualify for the 400m hurdles final and finished in a respectable sixth place with a personal best time of 70.49s and also recorded another personal best of 61.85s to reach the semi-final in the 400m. Meanwhile, she was among the nine-member team from Sabah Masters Athletics Association (Samas) representing Malaysia in the two-week event. Her other teammates are Shamry Mohd Ali, Juliana Gumpil, Abdul Mulok Awang Damit, James Wong Thien Yin, Lucy Yong, Joseph Latong, Bernice K M Lau and Charlie Lee. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 'Jensanity': Nvidia boss Jensen Huang gets rock star welcome in Taiwan

STORY: ::WARNING: FLASHING IMAGES He's the boss of a company that makes computer chips… not a rock star. But when Nvidia chief Jensen Huang touches down in Taiwan, you'd be forgiven for wondering. The tech exec gets a frenzied welcome from fans who clamor for autographs and a moment with their hero. Local media call it 'Jensanity'. Huang was born in Taiwan, but emigrated to the U.S. aged nine. On his native island he's come to be seen as a symbol of success, and a role model for young people. This fan says she waited for him all day at the airport. She says young people can learn from his spirit and dedication. Huang was back to speak at this week's Computex tech event, and he seemed happy to enjoy the attention: 'I love coming to Taiwan and I love seeing everybody here, and I appreciate, I appreciate their support, and everybody is very very kind.' After being mobbed by fans outside this restaurant, Huang was rushed off to be the guest of honor at an Olympics-adjacent event, onstage next to Taiwanese gold medallists. ::World Masters Games 2025 Organizing Committee All the frenzy puzzles some company colleagues with the exec often little noticed at events in the U.S. Though that too is changing, with Nvidia emerging as an American tech champion. Its stock market value has soared to over $3 trillion on investor bets it will dominate the market for AI chips. In Taipei, the Jensanity seems to know no bounds. Taiwan's vice president was forced to deny she rushed to attend one event in a bid to 'freeload' on Huang's star power.
