Mysuru doctor wins 2 medals at world masters games in Taipei
Dr Saini said it was an honour to participate in this championship. "It feels great to compete at the World Masters and connect with athletes from across the globe,"she told TOI.
Her recent achievements in Taipei follow her accomplishment at the 20th Masters' National Swimming Championship in Bhopal in 2024, where she won four gold medals in the 50m and 100m breaststroke, and 200m and 400m freestyle events.
Dr Saini began swimming when she was eight years old, and her involvement in the sport has continued for over five decades. During her MBBS at Mysuru Medical College and Research Institute in 1984, she secured bronze medal at the All India Inter-University Championship. Since the beginning of masters' swimming competitions in 2002, she has earned over 100 medals. "Returning to the pool is nostalgic," she expressed.
Combining her medical practice with swimming, Dr Saini stays committed to her six days a week training schedule.

State govt hospitals lack fire safety clearance: MLC
Shivamogga: Govt hospitals lack fire safety clearance in the state, BJP MLC Dhananjay Sarji said. He highlighted the insufficient number of govt hospitals in Karnataka with fire safety clearance during the legislative council session on Monday. He referred to recent fire accidents and called on the govt to relax regulations for older buildings and establish a timeline for obtaining clearance. Sarji questioned health and family welfare minister Dinesh Gundu Rao about the discrepancy in fire safety clearances between govt and private hospitals. According to the National Building Code (NBC), both govt and private hospitals are subject to identical regulations. However, the minister disclosed that only 14 out of 2,878 govt hospitals (0.005%) and 315 out of 5,850 private hospitals (0.05%) have secured fire safety clearance. Pointing out that five district hospitals in the state experienced fire accidents in the past two years, Sarji stressed the importance of ensuring all govt hospitals obtain fire safety clearance. He cited the Shivamogga District McGann Hospital fire accident a few years ago, during which 46 children were safely relocated to Sarji Hospital. Sarji said that under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, the govt has treated 63 lakh patients, many of whom are referred to private hospitals. He identified the lack of fire safety clearance as a significant problem and urged the govt to consider easing the rules, similar to measures taken in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, where specific fire safety laws for hospitals have been implemented. After hip procedure, woman, 85, set to walk
Mangalore: KMC Hospital Mangalore successfully performed a Reclaim Revision Hip System implantation, on an 85-year-old female patient. The woman sustained a severely comminuted and unstable hip fracture and was unable to walk. The procedure was skillfully led by a multidisciplinary team, including orthopaedic consultants Dr Vikram GK Bhat and Dr Sudhindra K, and anaesthetist Dr Shilpa GK Bhat. Following a detailed clinical evaluation and counselling, the woman and her family were guided through the available treatment options. Given the nature of the fracture and her overall health status, the team made a considered decision to proceed with the Reclaim Revision Hip System, a specialised implant designed to bypass the fractured bone segments and provide immediate post-operative stability. Dr Vikram said, "Elderly patients with severely comminuted hip fractures present a unique set of challenges, not just in terms of bone quality, but also their ability to recover post-surgery. In this case, a conventional approach would have risked delayed mobility and potential complications. Former India star and ex-BCCI chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar said he would have liked to play Kohli in the series. "If I were the India chief selector, I would have persuaded Virat to bid goodbye to Test cricket after playing the England series. We needed his class and experience in this series," Vengsarkar, a 116-Test veteran, said in an interview to TOI. Talking more about the India vs England series, Vengsarkar said coach Gautam Gambhir was right in aggressively going against the Oval curator, Lee Fortis, who stopped the India team from standing too close to the pitch. "As the head coach of the Indian team, Gambhir had every right to see the pitch from close quarters. When teams tour India, their entire team—and not just the coach and captain—examine the pitch minutely. Even their media inspects the pitch before the match. No one tells them anything. So, how are the rules different when we are playing in England?" Vengsarkar said. He went on to say that Matthew Hayden had no business in saying that Gambhir should have used 'better language' against the pitch curator. "Would Hayden, or any of the Aussie cricketers, take it well if a curator had asked them to stay away from the square ahead of an important match? If this had happened to the Aussies, they would have used the choicest of words to show the curator his place," Vengsarkar said. The 1983 World Cup winner was critical of the way BCCI handled Jasprit Bumrah's workload management. The fast bowler played only three out of the five Tests. "Considering the importance of the India versus England Tests series and his fragile back, Bumrah should have been told by the BCCI, selectors and the Indian team management to miss IPL-2025. It was very important that we had a fully fit and refreshed Bumrah for this iconic series. If I was the India chief selector, I would have convinced Mukesh Ambani (Mumbai Indians owner) and Bumrah that it was important for Bumrah to miss the IPL for the England series, or play a lesser number of matches in the IPL. I'm sure that they would have agreed to do so," he said. "Who remembers the runs and wickets taken in the IPL? However, people will remember Mohammed Siraj 's lion-hearted performance in this series (23 wickets in five Tests), Shubman Gill (754 runs in five Tests), KL Rahul (532), Yashasvi Jaiswal (411 runs) and Rishabh Pant 's (479) sublime batting, and Washington Sundar 's superb all-round performance (284 runs & seven wickets in four Tests). "A series like this one takes place probably once in four years. I believe India are not playing a five-Test series till Jan 2027 (against Australia). It was a series for the ages and I wish Bumrah was available for almost all the Tests. We could have won the series if that was the case."
