Zack Wheeler Breaks Fanchise Record With 1,000th Phillies' Strikeout
Zack Wheeler Breaks Fanchise Record With 1,000th Phillies' Strikeout originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Zack Wheeler has been nothing short of a phenomenal pitcher during his time in Philadelphia. Ever since the Phillies signed him before the 2020 season, Wheeler has been one of the top arms in all of MLB. With over 90 quality starts, a pair of All-Star appearances, and the National League strikeout crown in 2021, he's become a true ace at the top of the rotation. Advertisement During his latest start Monday night, the veteran righty added another huge accomplishment to his name. In the top of the 6th inning, Wheeler struck out Cubs outfielder Kyle Tucker, becoming the fastest to ever record 1,000 regular season strikeouts in a Phillies uniform. Wheeler reached the milestone in 907.2 innings, beating out franchise greats such as Steve Carlton, Robin Roberts, Cole Hamels, and more. As the above video shows, he got a nice standing ovation from the Philly faithful for his mark. Zack has accumulated 1,726 strikeouts in his entire career, putting him well within striking distance for 2,000 before he retires. That does not include the 77 more he's picked up during the postseason. Advertisement Wheeler currently sits at 10th all-time in total strikeouts among Phillies' pitchers, while teammate Aaron Nola is knocking on Hamels' door in 4th with 1,831. Zack Wheeler struck out seven Chicago Cubs hitters while allowing one run in six innings Monday Ross-Imagn Images Wheeler is currently in the second year of a three-year, $126 million deal that's made him the highest paid pitcher in baseball. Only two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto have higher annual salaries. At this stage in his career, the 35-year-old Wheeler has won plenty of respect throughout the game. But two things have eluded him to this point: a Cy Young Award, and a World Series Championship. Both remain in sight as this Phillies core tries to finish what they started seven years ago with the Bryce Harper signing. Rangers fire offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker after hitting struggles, 17-18 start to season
After a tough start to the season, the Texas Rangers are starting to make changes. The team announced Sunday that they have fired offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker after a hitting slump has led the Rangers to a 17-18 record early in the year. "After lengthy discussions and deliberations, we feel now is the appropriate time to provide our hitters with a new voice as we pursue goals of winning the division and reaching the postseason," Chris Young, the team's president of baseball operations, said in a statement. "We are extremely grateful to Donnie for all that he has accomplished here with the Rangers." The move came after Texas beat the Seattle Mariners 8-1 at home on Sunday, avoiding a sweep from the AL West rival. But the past few weeks have seen a smattering of disappointing results for the Rangers, who lost to the Mariners 13-1 and 2-1 earlier over the weekend and had three one-run losses last in a row last week. Advertisement After short stints with the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants, Ecker joined Texas' hitting staff in 2022, helping lead the team to a World Series Championship in 2023. In the statement, the team said that Ecker's replacement and "the structure of the club's hitting staff" will be addressed sometime this week. Texas' early-season problems have not had to do with their pitching efforts: The Rangers are tied for the sixth-best ERA in the league, at 3.44, and have one of the lowest WHIP numbers, 1.17, as well. And yet the team has lost 18 games already this year, including seven of their last 10. Advertisement The issues with the Rangers are much more about their hitting: Their .228 collective batting average is the sixth-lowest in the league. Texas also has also racked up the second-lowest number of runs and RBIs, beat out only by the league-worst Colorado Rockies. At this point in the season, the Rangers are sitting towards the bottom of the AL West, four games back from the division-best Mariners and only sitting above the slightly hopeless Los Angeles Angels. Clearly Texas' front office is seeing the same problem, and is hoping that a coaching change will reinvigorate the Rangers' offense — before it's too late.

Will Phillies Orion Kerkering Keep Up Dominant Start to Career?
It's almost impossible for a rookie to feel like an All-Star snub, but Orion Kerkering found a way to do it for the Philadelphia Phillies. While his club sent an MLB high seven representatives (eight with a substitute) to Arlington last summer, he and his pre-break 1.26 ERA were not one of them. Other than hitting a short rough patch with the rest of the team, Kerkering was phenomenal out of the Philly bullpen. He finished the season with their third-lowest ERA, behind Matt Strahm and Jeff Hoffman, and racked up 74 strikeouts in 63 innings. Add on the six he had as a late 2023 callup and Kerkering is well within striking distance of 100 early this season. Advertisement He would be the fastest Phillie to that mark since Seranthony Domínguez did it in 78.2 innings between 2018-19. Aug 29, 2024; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Orion Kerkering (50) throws a pitch during the seventh inning against the Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Streicher-Imagn Images Philly is putting a lot of faith in Kerkering, who only turns 24 next week. The club let the aforementioned Hoffman leave in free agency, and while they brought in former Toronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano, there's a wide-open setup spot to fill. A small sample size says Kerkering is the perfect man for the job. He allowed only one earned run and struck out 14 while pitching in the eighth inning last season. His 14 holds were right behind Hoffman (21) and Strahm (18). Then while most of the bullpen faltered against the New York Mets in last year's NLDS, Kerkering again gave up just one run and picked up five Ks in 3.2 innings. Advertisement If that level of pitching continues, Philly will have gotten tremendous value out of their former 5th round pick... perhaps even enough to help them finish the fight for a World Series Championship.
