If Theatre brings the unknown to Indy
More than 100 local artists kicked off the weekend by coming together for an unforgettable First Friday performance at Factory Arts District.
Why it matters: If Theatre's " unknown forces" event was a free opportunity to see some of our city's boldest performers in action while celebrating the 20th anniversary of the IndyFringe Festival.
Zoom in: The event saw artists, directors, costume designers and more collaborate to craft an immersive interpretation of " Woyzeck," a stage play written by German dramatist Georg Büchner between 1835 and 1837.
Left unfinished with no definitive text and no definite chronological sequence, the play follows the story of a lowly military barber named Franz Woyzeck who turns to violence after being subjected to humiliation, medical experimentation and infidelity.
It is loosely based on the true story of Johann Christian Woyzeck, a Leipzig wigmaker turned soldier who who murdered his wife in a fit of jealousy in 1821.
State of (stage) play: To fit with "Woyzeck" being presented as a series of related occurrences with no firm chronology, "unknown forces" saw these brief scenes played out simultaneously throughout Factory Arts District every five or 10 minutes.
Each director used their own cast to play the same set of characters.
Actors ranged from those with decades of experience to some who made "unknown forces" their debut.
💭 Justin's thought bubble: No one really knew what to expect when walking into Factory Arts District for the event. Promotional materials provided no explanations, and workers greeting attendees at the door with maps of the venue kept quiet as well.
That uncertainty added a lot of tension — and fun — to the evening. Screams, sobs and unsettling laughter came from all directions as the actors did their thing. And when it wrapped, guests were comparing notes to piece together what they just experienced.
