UK bronze medals for Wrexham AAC duo Walley and Simpson

Birmingham played host to this year's UK championships and medals went the way of Wrexham AAC duo Thomas Walley (pictured above) and Amber Simpson. Walley, looking to make it a spectacular hat-trick of triumphs, took bronze in the men's pole vault. On the back of his successes at the Welsh championships and English senior championships earlier in the season, Wrexham AFC fan Walley had to be satisfied with third spot on this occasion by clearing 5.10-metres. Having been the only athlete to go clear at 5.35m, Harrow's Owen Heard then enjoyed a celebratory clearance at 5.45m to win his first outdoor gold in the men's pole vault. Behind Heard, Adam Hague (Sheffield & Dearne) won silver after a third-time clearance at 5.25m. Bronze also went the way of Simpson in the women's hammer event. A consistent series witnessed a best effort of 65.64m from Simpson. There was a spectacular performance from Anna Purchase as she produced the second-best throw of her career, a 72.96m effort, to smash the championship record previously held by Sophie Hitchon.

Wrexham's Thomas hits the heights to win prestigious title

Wrexham AAC ace Walley claimed victory at the English senior championships, which took place in Birmingham. His effort of 5.05-metres was enough to make sure of success in the pole vault. Next up, he is back in Birmingham this weekend for the UK championships. 'I was really pleased,' admitted Walley, a huge Wrexham AFC supporter. 'I won the Welsh title a couple of weeks back. I went to the English championships as a guest. 'I didn't get quite as high as I have been jumping, but it was a good competition.' It was a close competition between Walley and William Lane, as they both cleared 5.05m. 'We were a fair bit above the rest of the field and it was neck and neck,' added Walley. 'It went down to me having less failures.' Looking ahead to this weekend's huge challenge, he said: 'It's the UK championships back in Birmingham. It will be a tough one, but I'm up for it.' Also in winning form was Spencer Jones. He took part in the BMC regional event, in Aberdare, where a personal best of 17-19.90 made sure he won the U13 boys' 3k walk. Adding to the Wrexham good news stories was Amanda Bailey, at the Dolgellau five-mile road race. She was first W50 in a new record time of 36.20, which saw her crossing the line 22nd overall. A trio of talented youngsters made their mark in multiple events at the North Wales junior league meet, in Bangor. There was a hat-trick of triumphs for Spencer Jones in the U13 boys' section. He took first in the shot put (8.08m), 200-meters (30.30) and 2k walk (10.56.01). Competing in the U11 boys' section was Ellis Jones, who triumphed in the shot put (5.61m) and 800m walk (4-56.09), while he was fifth in the long jump (2.92m). English pole vault title goes the way of Wrexham's Walley

The talented Wrexham AAC pole vaulter was pleased he had it with him as he managed to claim victory at the English senior championships, which took place in a three-day meet at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium. 'I always have it in my bag,' admitted big Wrexham AFC fan Walley. Walley's effort of 5.05-metres was enough to make sure of success in the pole vault. Rival William Lane also managed to clear the same height, but it was Walley who managed to secure victory on the day. Third place went to Jack Phipps, one of a trio of competitors who cleared 4.80-metres as their best height. It's the latest success story for 27-year-old Walley, who is a nine-time Welsh pole vault champion. He has enjoyed a good season so far, once more taking the Welsh outdoor pole vault title, while he was fourth in the event at the UK indoor championships, held in Birmingham in February. He recently won the Welsh pole vault title and he is hoping for a hat-trick as he heads back to Birmingham this weekend for the UK championships.
