Hamlet: Wakefulness review – fraught and full-throated musical tragedy

It begins with lines from Under the Earth I Go, a reflective piece about death and renewal, written as his own elegy by the Scottish poet Hamish Henderson. That serves as a suitably contemplative introduction to Shakespeare's death-fixated play, one that begins after the poisoning of one Hamlet and ends with the slaughter of another. Wrocław's Song of the Goat gravitates naturally to such material. This least frivolous of companies made its name on the fringe in 2004 with Chronicles: A Lamentation, an expressive dance-theatre piece shot through with haunting polyphonic song that felt placeless and timeless. The company is in full voice here in Grzegorz Bral's response to Shakespeare's play, the music more recognisably of a western operatic tradition, but no less rich and resonant. Gorgeous though the singing is, with its waves of tightly drilled choral sound sometimes accompanied by the bowed string instrument known as a nyckelharpa, the production seems uninterested in saying anything fresh about Hamlet. Packed into an hour, it is set on the night of the old king's murder and features the familiar characters – a resolute Claudius, an obstinate Ophelia and an angry Gertrude, as well as an indignant Hamlet – but makes no attempt to explore them in depth. There is a smattering of speeches, heavily accented and hard to make sense of, and a couple of anachronistic additions ('The end justifies the means,' says Claudius; 'Quiet bitch,' says old Hamlet for no apparent reason), but only the sketchiest sense of a narrative arc. And that is a problem because when emotion is detached from action, it comes across as histrionic. The mood is sombre, fraught and intense, but to what ends? It leaves the characters looking two-dimensional and crudely old-fashioned. A primarily sung piece, Hamlet – Wakefulness scores highly on gothic ferocity, less so on dramatic purpose. VSB secures contract for 303MWp solar project in Poland

German renewable energy developer VSB Group has received a contract for difference (CfD) for a 303 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar project in Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Poland. The contract was issued by the Polish Energy Regulatory Office (URE). The project will be one of the largest photovoltaic (PV) parks in Poland. The construction of this ground-mounted PV plant, currently in the development phase, is scheduled to begin in October 2025. The plant spans more than 260 hectares northeast of Wrocław and will provide enough clean power for 117,000 households annually. This initiative profits from a 15-year CfD that will provide long-term price stability. The anticipated grid connection for this project is expected in the second quarter (Q2) of 2027. VSB Poland managing director Hubert Kowalski stated: 'With this project, we are setting a new benchmark for solar energy in Poland. In just a few years, it could evolve into one of Europe's largest hybrid energy projects, combining photovoltaics, battery storage and wind power. 'Its success will depend on economic conditions and future regulatory frameworks. At VSB, we maintain an ongoing dialogue with local communities to jointly develop stable, utility-scale renewable energy solutions. Projects like this would stand no chance without the consent and support of local stakeholders." This is VSB Poland's second major project in recent years, and follows Miejska Górka – currently the largest wind project in Poland with an installed capacity of 190.8MW. It was developed by VSB for TAURON Zielona Energia. VSB Group CEO Dr Felix Grolman stated: 'We are proud to actively contribute to the energy transition with this flagship photovoltaic project – one of the largest in Poland. It embodies the scale and ambition needed to drive meaningful change, while enhancing energy security in Poland and across Europe. This solar park marks a significant milestone on that journey.' In September 2024, TAURON Polska Energia's subsidiary, TAURON Zielona Energia, made an agreement to acquire project rights for Miejska Górka, expected to be operational by early 2027, from the VSB Group. The key weapon Daniel Dubois must use better in Oleksandr Usyk rematch

The jab is the simplest and most effective weapon in the arsenal of any fighter. It is both an offensive and defensive tool - scoring points and serving as a placeholder for follow-up punches. Whilst Daniel Dubois is known for his concussive power, his jab is an underrated asset that he deploys to set up highlight reel knockouts. However, in his first encounter with Oleksandr Usyk, it proved ineffective. But why was this the case, and are there any changes Dubois can make in the rematch this weekend to bring his jab back into play and claim the undisputed title? Statistics gathered from the first Usyk vs Dubois fight and the next three fights of the Brit tell an interesting story. Activity level Having an active jab is important both on the attack and on the back foot. It allows a fighter to break the rhythm of their opponent in retreat and force them into their defensive shape going forward. In Wrocław in 2023, Dubois threw 163 jabs at an average of 18.1 per round. When compared to his following fights against Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic, it is easy to see that Dubois was not firing his jab off enough against Usyk. In his next three fights, he averaged nearly 30 more jabs thrown at 192.3, which is a more impressive number when considering none of those fights went the distance. Against a man like Usyk, having an inactive jab allows him to get into a rhythm and put his stamina and output advantages to work. Even if it isn't always landing, a jab acts as a deterrent, especially one with the power of Dubois behind it. His best-performing round for jab output against Usyk, round two, was still the lowest total of any of his following three fights with Miller, Hrgovic and Anthony Joshua. Accuracy Dubois' jab accuracy was one of his biggest failings in the first fight. From his total of 163 jabs thrown, only 10 landed in the entire fight. That gives him 6.1 per cent accuracy rate. For context, through his next three fights, he averaged 58.3 jabs landed at 23.8 per cent accuracy - almost a fourfold increase in accuracy percentage against Miller, Hrgovic and Joshua. If you convert that into jabs landed per round against Usyk, it reveals a shocking 1.1 jabs hit the target for Dubois. This perfectly exemplifies where it went wrong for Dubois. When the jab is failing to find the target, Dubois is stifled and cannot set up any of his work, which leaves him at sea, desperately trying to counterattack against a master technician in Usyk. In the first fight, he tried to use his jab to close the distance to Usyk and follow up with a powerful right hand to the head or body. But when the jab does not land on the target, it forces Dubois to reset and try again, allowing Usyk to counterattack. Who is responsible for the ineffective jab? It would be easy to blame the man throwing the jab for its inefficiency, and against any other fighter, you might be right. But with the benefit of being able to compare his performances, it shows us that it was Usyk who nullified the jab of Dubois. Usyk used educated and varied pressure to force Dubois to miss. His smart defence incorporates in-and-out movement, a high guard, and plenty of lateral movement to never present a static target or come forward in a straight line. If we compare this to Jarrell Miller, who also put the pressure on Dubois throughout the fight, we see that Dubois used his jab as a much more effective weapon. Miller's pressure, in comparison to Usyk, was uneducated, plodding forward and following Dubois rather than cutting off the ring. This makes it exponentially easier to land a jab. This shows in the stats. Dubois landed his jab with 46.2 per cent accuracy against Miller, having thrown almost double, compared to the aforementioned 6.1 per cent against Usyk. Usyk's ability to maintain his variety, output and movement at heavyweight is something a traditional heavyweight like Dubois is always going to struggle to adjust to. It's clear that Usyk won the battle of the jabs and was able to use his southpaw tricks to muzzle Dubois' lead hand. The Ukrainian threw 101 more jabs than Dubois and landed four times as many. What can Dubois do in the rematch? The number one priority for Dubois in the rematch should be to slow the feet of Usyk. This was a major factor in his jab being ineffective. Usyk operates out of a strong high guard, which he added to his game when he made his foray into the heavyweight division. Dubois can use this to access the body by throwing a feint jab to the head to freeze his guard. He could then follow up with a spearing jab just above the protector of Usyk in the early goings, and the investment will pay dividends in the late rounds, slowing down the feet of the unified champion. It is, of course, not quite as simple as that. Usyk will have a game plan of his own. But if Dubois can focus his early offence on the body, then he can look to capitalise as Usyk makes his adjustments through the middle rounds and land some heavy combinations behind his jab. Skanska secures $59m contract for building bypass in Poland

Skanska has signed a contract valued at 214m zlotys ($59.4m) with the Lower Silesian Road and Railway Authority for the construction of a bypass in Wrocław, Poland. This new infrastructure project aims to enhance the transport system in southern Wrocław. The new 3.6km provincial road No. 372 will connect the A4 junction in Bielany Wrocławskie with Grota-Roweckiego Street. The project encompasses the construction of turbine roundabouts, a viaduct, a bridge, two footbridges, a 'semi-tunnel', and full technical infrastructure. The bypass is designed to accommodate heavy traffic and therefore enhance safety, traffic flow, and reduce noise in the area. Finishing the Eastern Ring Road will enhance connectivity between districts and suburbs, improve access to the A4 motorway, and decrease local traffic congestion. Work on the bypass is scheduled to commence this month, with completion expected by the end of 2027. The contract will be included in the company's order bookings for Europe in the second quarter (Q2) of 2025. In addition to this bypass project, Skanska announced a $76.59m investment in a new residential project in the Czech Republic. The construction, part of the D.O.K. Radlice project, valued at Kč 1.0bn, is set for inclusion in the company's European order intakes for Q2 2025. Located in Prague's Radlice district, this residential project will include 177 low-energy apartments across three residential buildings. Furthermore, Skanska has secured a $250m contract from the Massachusetts Port Authority to develop a new parking garage and make additional improvements at Logan Airport's Terminal E in Boston, US. This project is part of Massport's Terminal E Renovation and Expansion Programme. Emotional Antony gives update on Man United future and explains why Real Betis fell apart in Conference League final against Chelsea

Man United loanee Antony was left in tears after he was powerless to prevent Chelsea coming from behind to beat his Real Betis side 4-1 and win the Conference League final in Wrocław. The Brazilian has been in dazzling form since moving to Spain on loan in January, scoring nine goals and adding five assists, offering a glimpse of the form that saw Man United splash £86million to sign him from Ajax. Despite all the pre-match hype, however, the Brazilian was unable to impact the final. Betis took a ninth-minute lead through Abde Ezzalzouli which they held until the 65th minute when they capitulated and conceded four goals in 25 minutes with Enzo Fernandez, Nicolas Jackson, Jadon Sancho and Moises Caicedo all scoring. At the final whistle, Antony broke down in tears and was consoled by his fellow Man United loanee Sancho who gave him a big hug. Antony has spoken of his love for Real Betis and the joy he has felt since moving to Seville after his dark days at Man United where he says he did not have 'the strength to even play with my son, going days without eating, staying locked in my room'. Manuel Pellegrini's side want to keep the 25-year-old but will need to shell out around £30-35m and fend off competition for his signature, leaving Antony in limbo. And when quizzed after the match, Antony admitted he is no wiser on his future. 'I don't what will happen in the future, only God knows,' he told CBS Sports. 'My work is playing and I'm doing that well. I have a lot of affection for Betis, for everyone but I have a contract with Man United and I don't know what's going to happen. 'Now I will go to the national team and then on holiday then we will see what happens in the future. 'I'm very happy here, everyone knows that but I have a contract.' Chesea's victory means they became the first club to win each of the five major European trophies but, for almost two thirds of the match, they were trailing to their La Liga opponents. The Blues looked out of sorts in a first half but Cole Palmer turned the game on its head by providing two crosses in the 65th and 70th minutes — one with his left foot, the other with his right, both equally exquisite — which spun this final on its head. Antony has scored nine goals and adding five assists for Betis during his loan at Real Betis But, while congratulating Chelsea on their triumph, Antony admitted that Betis only had themselves to blame. 'Right now it's difficult to say any words, we knew the importance of this final but we lost. Congratulations to Chelsea for the title,' he said. 'Concentration was our downfall. 'It was a good first half but in the second half, we didn't have the ball. We need to remember that it's a game of 90 minutes and we didn't concentrate for the entire game.'
