Nearly half of shoppers are concerned about tariff-related fashion costs: report

About 46% of consumers are concerned about rising fashion and clothing prices in the wake of tariffs, according to a report from Wunderkind. More than half of consumers are willing to switch brands due to pricing. However, only 46% said they would remain loyal to brands, even when offered perks, clear pricing and availability updates. The shift gives challenger brands the opportunity to win over customers with competitive pricing and reliable delivery options, per Wunderkind. About 91% of surveyed customers said they were aware of impending tariffs, which Wunderkind said is a signal that economic shifts and uncertainty are firmly on the public radar. Brands can't afford to ignore tariff-related concerns when it comes to messaging, according to the analytics firm. Wunderkind's report found that 23% of respondents have already begun cutting back on nonessential goods, and 21% of Gen Z respondents said they were actively switching retailers and seeking lower prices. Looking ahead, consumers said they're planning to cut their spending during the summer and holiday seasons, with 37% saying they would reduce their overall spend. Thirty-two percent said they would focus only on essentials, while 42% said they'd look for discounts. Similarly, 56% of customers are willing to wait longer for a product if the price is right, with 61% of millennials and 69% of Gen Z reporting this. Against this backdrop, the report also found that customers are receptive to marketing messages, as long as there is value to gain. About 43% of shoppers said they were willing to opt into email and text message marketing in exchange for better prices or early access to deals. This sentiment is even stronger within Gen Z, with 54% saying they'd be open to this kind of strategy. Wunderkind's data is based on a survey of more than 300 U.S. consumers, collected between April 14 and 16. Wunderkind said in the report that it plans to conduct similar polls about consumer sentiment as news around tariffs persists. Pearls are a classic item that has made a comeback this season, as seen at the Spring Summer 2025 collections for design houses including Chanel, Moschino and Bottega Venetta. Speaking over email to Lucy Crowther, founder of Minka Jewels, she told me that this revival has taken place over the past two years, but today's pearls have a modern twist to them and don't resemble the traditional sets of the past. 'We have been stringing pearls on vibrant-colored threads while using the traditional knotting technique specific to pearls. Tahitian pearls look stunning when paired with a bright green thread, which enhances the dark green and gold tones of the pearls beautifully,' she said. She explained that as everyone is drawn to color, combining this with the simple beauty and purity of a pearl's iridescence is a trend that is here to stay. As described by Jessie Thomas, from Jessie Thomas Jewelry, pearls can be modernized by marrying them with textured gold and gemstones. 'I often add black rhodium to give a traditional pair of pearl earrings a rock'n'roll edge,' she says. Jessie loves using baroque pearls in her designs because they feel very contemporary and a bit unusual, but ultimately, because they work for women of all ages. Another category we have seen on the runway is marine-inspired jewelry. I emailed Cece Fein Hughes, from Cece, to talk about her creations, and she told me that she has always loved incorporating marine-inspired designs in her jewelry. 'The ocean and its creatures hold so much meaning to so many people, from its calming presence to the memories it stirs of seaside escapes and adventures. It's timeless and universally evocative, which is why I think people will always gravitate towards it,' she said. Marine-inspired jewelry has a way of blending elegance with storytelling, and this year, we will see this trend becoming even more sought-after as people embrace meaningful and effortlessly chic designs. On the runway the trend was prominent at Roberto Cavalli, Chloe and Schiaparelli's Spring/Summer 2025 shows. It also reflects people's environmental awareness, and as Lito Karokostanoglou, founder of Lito, told me, jewelers get inspired by nature's beauty and are keen to design jewelry that reminds us of nature or use materials that come from nature. The torque style is bold and simple, with a clean and elegant structure, and it aligns perfectly with the modern desire for minimalism and a return to the 90s aesthetic– as seen at Gucci and Chloe's catwalk presentations for Spring/Summer 2025. Laura Vann (founder of Laura Vann ) tells me that she loves how clean they are and how chic they look when resting on a bare collarbone. 'They have an air of nostalgia that could nod to the 90s but also feels hard to pinpoint as they date back thousands of years ago!' Bold, sculptural earrings are another look we will see more of this summer (as seen at Saint Laurent's Spring/Summer 2025 show). Inspired by the power-dressing of the 1980s, they can elevate an outfit instantly. According to Rachel Boston, from Rachel Boston, statement pieces can be highly versatile; gold earrings, as an example, are an easy way to add an element of interest to a more casual look or to add personality to a more formal outfit. 'I find that framing the face with earrings instantly makes someone look put together and elegant, and I love that yellow gold specifically has a warm glow about it that looks good on more or less everyone,' she says. This is emphasized by Alexia Karides, founder of YSSO, who adds that big sculptural earrings are trending because people are interested in pieces that elevate their existing wardrobes and can mix and match with the most basic outfits. 'I think it's a translation of the 'lipstick effect', where people cut down spending but spend on little luxuries that allow them to feel good, express themselves and treat themselves'.
