Wycombe's previous encounters against the seven new teams who will play in League One
Following AFC Wimbledon's 1-0 victory against Walsall in the League Two play-off final, all of the teams for the 2025/26 League One season have been confirmed. Coming from the division below, Wycombe Wanderers will face Doncaster Rovers, Bradford City and Port Vale as well as the original Dons, whilst Cardiff City, Plymouth Argyle and Luton Town have arrived following their relegations from the Championship. So, let us look back at when the Chairboys each faced these seven times in the league. Wycombe Wanderers 1-3 Luton Town, April 10, 2021 This fixture came at the back end of Wanderers' maiden season in the Championship, which saw them suffer relegation back down to the third tier in May of that year. Against the Hatters, Anis Mehmeti scored a first-half penalty to put Wanderers 1-0 up, but on 57 minutes, the game completely changed. Centre back and that year's Player of the Season, Josh Knight, was sent off for deliberately denying a goal-scoring opportunity. Luton gathered momentum and scored three goals in the final 10 minutes to secure all three points in South Buckinghamshire. Plymouth Argyle 1-0 Wycombe Wanderers, December 29, 2022 In what was the club's final league game of 2022, Wycombe travelled to Home Park to face Plymouth, who had beaten them 1-0 earlier in the season. Dan Scarr, once of Wanderers, scored the only goal of the game as Argyle continued to strive in the top two whilst Wycombe were battling in and around the play-offs. However, the game is best remembered for a concerning incident surrounding then-Chairboys striker Tjay De Barr. The Gibraltarian collapsed at the full-time whistle and was taken to hospital but was later discharged. He had taken a knock to the chest and began to cough up blood after the match had ended. Cardiff City 2-1 Wycombe Wanderers, April 24, 2021 The penultimate away league outing of Wycombe's Championship season, Wanderers knew that a win against the Bluebirds gave them a realistic chance of staying up. Kieffer Moore put the hosts ahead before Joe Jacobson, a Cardiff fan growing up, scored a penalty to bring the Chairboys level. But Moore's second late on, despite Will Vaulks' red card, gave the Welsh side the win. AFC Wimbledon 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers, April 18, 2022 Wycombe and Wimbledon have played each other a couple of times in the EFL Trophy since 2022, with the point on Easter Monday playing a huge part in their promotion push that year. Jack Rudoni put the Dons ahead before Adebayo Akinfenwa's late header, which was his last for the club against his former side, rescued a point. Wimbledon were relegated that year whilst Wycombe reached the play-off final, losing to Sunderland. Wycombe Wanderers 0-0 Bradford City, February 2, 2019 Despite Wycombe playing Bradford twice in cup matches during 2023/24 season, you have to go back to the 2018/19 campaign when the Chairboys faced the Bantams in the league. The encounter at Adams Park that day finished goalless, with the Yorkshire outfit suffering relegation to League Two that year. Wycombe avoided the drop with an end-of-season rally, with three wins from their last six games. Port Vale 1-2 Wycombe Wanderers, April 16, 2024 This mid-week fixture from just over a year ago saw David Wheeler put Wycombe a goal up inside four minutes before Ethan Chislett equalised moments after the break. Then, on a ramping run forward, on-loan Wolverhampton Wanderers man Nigel Lonwjik scored the winner with minutes remaining. Vale were relegated that year but only spent one season in League Two before a return to League One. Strikes from Garath McCleary and Anis Mehmeti easily wrapped up the win for Wycombe against Doncaster in the most recent clash between the two teams. Wanderers reached the play-off final that year whilst Donny were relegated to League Two. They would remain in the division for three years.

Working with Rob Couhig again 'a big factor' in new deal says Reading favourite Wing
Reading midfielder Lewis Wing has admitted that the opportunity to work with new owner Rob Couhig was a driving factor behind signing a new contract. The 29-year-old signed a new three-year extension last week, the first new deal signed in the Couhig era after the American ended Dai Yongge's eight-year reign on May 14. Winning Player of the Season in his debut campaign, the former Middlesbrough man has racked up 99 appearances in two years and was regularly captaining the side in the absence of Andy Yiadom. Joining in 2023 after 18 months with Wycombe Wanderers, the fan favourite worked with Couhig and new CEO Joe Jacobson at Adams Park and has admitted that the opportunity to work with them again was appealing. "Ever since I walked through the door, it has felt like home," Wing told the club. "Throughout my career I've missed that, so that was the main reason. "With the new owners coming in, I've worked with them before, and I know how they run a club and how successful they can be so that was a big factor. "Most of all, I want to repay the fans for everything they have done for me in the last two years. I want to continue the journey with them and this football club." There are still 13 futures up in their air this spring, with contracts offered to players set to depart. This includes key men Joel Pereira, Amadou Mbengue and Michael Craig, all who have deals that run up to June 30. Talks remain ongoing as thoughts already turn to next season, with pre-season plans being confirmed in the coming weeks.

Former Wycombe Wanderers man achieves promotion to the Premier League
Former Wycombe Wanderers man Luke O'Nien will be a Premier League player next season after he helped Sunderland win promotion out of the Championship. The midfielder, who spent three years at Adams Park between 2015 and 2018, started in the 2-1 victory against Sheffield United at Wembley Stadium on May 24, but suffered a dislocated shoulder just eight minutes into the contest. The Black Cats found themselves a goal down midway through the first-half thanks to Tyreece Campbell's brilliant finish, but Eliezer Mayenda's goal on 77 minutes and Tom Watson's strike deep into stoppage time secured the North East team's place in the top-flight for the first time since 2017. Former Wycombe man Luke O'Nien will be a Premier League player next season. Released by Watford, learnt his trade at Adams Park and he has now built something special at Sunderland. Congrats @LukeONien! #Chairboys — James Richings (@James_BFP) May 24, 2025 For O'Nien, who has been coined Mr Sunderland in recent years, the win at Wembley will start a new chapter in his career, which seemed like a pipe dream 10 years ago. Starting his career at Watford, the robust defensive midfielder played just one first-team game and had two successful separate loan spells at Non League Wealdstone, before being released by the Hornets in the summer of 2015 - the same year they won promotion to the Premier League. A free transfer to League Two Wycombe followed, and under Gareth Ainsworth, O'Nien proved his capabilities as an EFL player. He featured 119 times in all competitions, scored 16 goals and won promotion to League One in his final season. When @LukeONien achieved his first promotion. Beyond delighted for him today! — Matt Cecil (@mattcecil87) May 24, 2025 In 2018, a big-money move to Sunderland, who were now in the same league as Wanderers, followed after the club suffered back-to-back relegations, and in his first year in the North East, he suffered the pain of losing two Wembley finals. These were against Portsmouth in the EFL Trophy final and Charlton Athletic in the play-offs, respectively. Two seasons later in 2021, Sunderland once again reached the play-offs but lost in the semi-finals against Lincoln City, but they did win that year's EFL Trophy final against Tranmere Rovers, which O'Nien played in. It was the first time he had been victorious at the home of English football. Twelve months later, he won another Wembley final – this time against his former club Wycombe in the 2022 League One play-off showpiece, before his latest triumph under the arch against Sheffield United. NEW: Luke O'Nien says he 'wouldn't swap anything' on a 'perfect' afternoon for Sunderland 🔴⚪️🏆 The defender was forced off in the opening minutes because of a dislocated shoulder, but was overjoyed that Sunderland are a Premier League club again 🆙#SAFC — Daniel Wales (@danielwales023) May 24, 2025 The victory against the Blades means O'Nien has now achieved promotion from League Two to the Premier League. Man, 23 and boy, 17 charged after Wycombe's play-off loss against Charlton
Two people have been charged following a disturbance in Wycombe Wanderers' play-off semi-final defeat against Charlton Athletic. After the first leg at Adams Park on May 11 finished 0-0, Matty Godden's 81st minute goal in the second match four days later secured the Addicks' place in the final, where they will take on Leyton Orient this Sunday [May 25]. However, amongst the jubilant scenes at full-time, which saw many Charlton fans storm the Valley pitch, a small group of supporters made their way over to the Jimmy Seed Stand, where 1,600 Wanderers fans were based. Angry gestures were exchanged before a flare was thrown into the Wycombe fans. It has been confirmed by the Metropolitan Police that two people, a 23-year-old man and a 17-year-old, have been charged. They told the Free Press: 'A man and a 17-year-old boy have been charged following an incident at Valley Stadium on Thursday, 15 May. 'A 17-year-old boy was charged with pitch incursion and possession of a flare. He is due to appear at Bromley Magistrates' Youth Court on Friday, June 27. 'He has been bailed on the condition not to attend a regulated football match and not to go within half a mile of Wembley on match days. 'Luke Slipper, 23 (15.11.2001) of Well Hall Road, Greenwich was charged with pitch incursion, possession of a flare and for throwing a missile. 'He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Friday, June 6. 'He has been bailed on the condition not to attend a regulated football match and not to go within a mile of Wembley on match days.' The incident caused numerous Wycombe fans to question the level of security that was deployed at the Valley on May 15, with one Wanderers supporter saying he was 'frustrated and annoyed' at the lack of protection the away following received. Neville White, who attended the match with his son, admitted he 'just needed to get out' of the former Premier League stadium when things started to intensify at the full-time whilste. He said: 'They scored the goal, they won, and they came onto the pitch. 'That's fine, I get that because we [Wycombe] have been there and have done it. 'But from my perspective, some decided to come down to our end to try and start an altercation with us. 'The problem was that there weren't enough stewards to protect the Wycombe fans from what was going on, and the ones that were there didn't do anything. 'You had these fans doing the bravado, putting their fingers up and you get that wherever you go. "But getting pelted with flares…that's when it was getting nasty. Thankfully, my son and I weren't hit, but people around us were. 'I said to my son that we need to get out of here because if one hits you in the face, it could blind you. 'We got out, but we were annoyed and frustrated." An official complaint by Mr White was issued to Charlton Athletic, who responded with the following. They said: 'Firstly, please accept our apologies for your unpleasant evening at The Valley, which resulted in quite a few issues during our post-match deployment. 'We, as a match day safety team, will carry out a full internal investigation, view CCTV, gather evidence, inform the Police, and ensure football banning orders are in place for all culprits. 'The behaviour witnessed is not acceptable anywhere in any sport.'

Ryan Longman on Wrexham promotion experience helping him
Phil Parkinson's men finished runners-up in League One to secure an historic third successive promotion. The competition for a top-two finish was fierce with Wycombe Wanderers, Stockport County and Charlton Athletic in the mix but the Reds finished the job with a game to go, joining title winners Birmingham City in going straight up to the Championship. Longman arrived at The Racecourse from Hull City in January and although he has played in the Championship over the last few years, the 24-year-old finally got to celebrate a first ever promotion. And the wing-back says having experienced campaigners like James McClean, Matty James and Jay Rodriguez in the dressing room, as well as players used to winning promotion in their careers, was a big help when the finishing line was in sight. "There's a lot of boys in that changing room that have experienced promotions and they've got that understanding of the game and how to see it all out," said Longman. MORE WREXHAM AFC NEWS "I'm 24 and I'd never been in a promotion side before so just being in and around them, and having them in the changing room and feeing off them, learning off them, has been been massive for my game as well. "They are really experienced and knowing that they've been in them situations before, you feed off them because they make you feel calm and you feel like you can go out and perform. "They are an unbelievable talent and some of them have had incredible careers, and they still want to do well, they want to keep going. "Hopefully they do and hopefully we can carry on the way we're going."
