Wyn Davies 1942-2025
Born in Caernarfon, Davies enjoyed goal-laden stints at Wrexham and Bolton Wanderers in the early stages of his footballing career before joining Newcastle United in 1966. Known affectionately as 'Wyn the Leap' and 'The Mighty Wyn' due to his aerial prowess, the Welshman spent five years at St. James' Park, scoring 53 goals in 216 appearances for the Magpies whilst wearing the famous nine shirt, and was part of the United team which won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969 under Joe Harvey's management. Davies then enjoyed spells at Manchester City, Manchester United and Blackpool during the 1970s before finishing his career with Bangor City in 1979 as well as gaining 34 senior international caps for Wales, scoring six times. The club's thoughts are with Wyn's family and friends at this difficult time.

'Wyn played wholeheartedly all of the time'
Newcastle legend Bob Moncur says his former teammate Ronald 'Wyn' Davies, who has died aged 83, was loved because he was "wholehearted". Moncur told BBC Radio Newcastle: "What a great character he was and of course he was a great centre forward. I've never seen anything like him then and since - how high he could jump and head the ball. "When Wyn was there at Newcastle United he was a great team player as well. He played wholeheartedly all the time. "He wasn't the best on the ground but up in the air there was nobody who could compete with him, not just in England but in Europe as well. Former Manchester United and Wales forward Wyn Davies has died aged 83. The striker, dubbed the 'footballer who could fly' played for 11 clubs including rivals Manchester City during a 20-year career. Wyn was known for his heading ability, also earning the nickname 'Wyn the Leap' and he represented Wales 34 times, scoring six times. At Newcastle, where he spent five seasons between 1966-1971 playing 181 league matches, he is still remembered as 'The Mighty Wyn'. The former forward's family announced his death with 'deep sadness'. Niece Kasey Allsup wrote: 'Rest in peace, Uncle Ronald Wyn Davies.' 'A Welsh legend, and our family's pride. You'll be missed more than words can say. Thank you for the memories, the inspiration, and the love.' The Football Association of Wales said: 'The thoughts of everyone at the FAW are with the family and friends of Wyn Davies during this difficult time.' The Welsh international started his career at with local sides Locomotive Llanberis and Caernarfon Town, alongside working at a slate quarry, before joining Wrexham. He then signed for Bolton before moving to Tyneside. At Newcastle he won the Fairs Cup in 1969 and was England legened Bryan Robson's 'childhood hero'. Wyn later spent a season at Man City, before controversially moving to Old Trafford.
