‘Bright future': Loved ones pay tribute to teen killed in crash

A Brisbane community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of 14-year-old Declan Phillips, who was fatally struck by a car while walking to school. The crash occurred on Berrima St, Wynnum, about 1.5km from Wynnum State High School, just after 8.20am on Wednesday. The 17-year-old driver of the a Mitsubishi Pajero, along with two passengers, a 41-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy, were not physically injured. Authorities are treating the incident as an accident. Declan has been remembered by those who knew him as a talented, gentle teenager with a bright future ahead of him. 'Declan had such a promising, bright future,' a family friend wrote on a GoFundMe page set up to support his grieving family. 'He was skilled and talented in a wide array of areas, from speed cubing, running and math through to woodwork and engineering. 'He loved camping, collecting model cars, Lego engineering and was working on his fitness goals – training and eating healthily and methodically. 'He had plans to be a tradie, live in the countryside and do up cars. 'He had already started saving towards his first car. He was proud of his achievements and his friends and family were proud of him. 'His chair which normally holds his school bag sits empty in the dining room. His hobbies, toys and iPad remain untouched. His room is quiet and still.' Tributes near the crash site had been growing on Thursday afternoon, with the school and wider community rocked by the loss. Local state MP Joan Pease said the accident was 'heartbreaking'. 'It's heartbreaking for all those involved, the young person that sadly lost their life and also the driver of the other vehicle,' she said. 'A young kid just off to school, like he's done every other morning, and a terrible incident like that happens and impacts him, his family, all of the school students, his mates at school. 'He was a very highly respected young student, a very diligent and hardworking young man. 'This has really rocked our community.' The fundraiser to support the family with funeral costs has been met with an outpouring of community generosity. 'Declan was a quiet achiever at school and somewhat shy, but when he set his mind to do something, he went all in and excelled. His favourite subjects were HPE and woodwork,' the family friend said. 'Most recently he made a camping stool out of canvas and wood and was looking forward to presenting it to his mum Lily for her birthday this weekend. 'He was also looking forward to making a wooden racing car in woodwork next term. 'He will be dearly missed by his friends and the whole Wynnum State High School community as well as all his friends outside the school, family and the wider Wynnum community. 'It is with a broken heart that I ask you to help the family say goodbye to their dear son, and our beloved friend, Declan.'

Tragedy as learner driver behind the wheel of SUV strikes and kills 14-year-old student

A student has been killed near their school after being struck by a car. Emergency services were called to Tingal Road and Berrima Street in Wynnum, east of Brisbane, about 8.20am on Wednesday. A Mitsubishi Pajero being driven by a 17-year-old struck the 14-year-old one kilometre away from Wynnum State High School. The 4WD, with L-Plates visible in the window, was recovered from underneath the Wynnum Rail Bridge on Berrima Street. Neither the driver nor his two passengers, a 41-year-old female and a 16-year-old male, were injured. Queensland Police are now investigating the crash. Wynnum State High School sent a letter out to parents of children at the school informing them of what had happened. The school has offered support and guidance counselling for students and staff to ensure 'everybody is cared for in the wake of this tragic event'. Principal Sandra Quinn said the Year 9 student was 'much-loved' and a valued member of the community. 'I know that you will join me in offering our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,' she wrote, reports the Courier Mail. 'As a tight-knit school community, we share our shock and sadness at the enormity of this situation.' Earlier Tingal Road was closed to traffic with drivers being diverted via either Bride or Burke streets. The Wynnum Rail Bridge, also known as Duck Bridge, is infamous for its 1.9m clearance which is too low for most emergency vehicles to fit under. It is unknown if the bridge impeded emergency efforts.

Firefighter's pole anchors incredible station conversion

A designer couple has listed their award-winning fire station home, where an original firefighter's pole anchors a spectacular conversion. Originally built in 1938, the Bayside Fire Station was reimagined as a one-of-a-kind family home, blending heritage architecture with contemporary design. The property at 39 Mountjoy Tce, Wynnum is on the market via an expressions of interest campaign closing May 29. The unique five-bedroom, three-bathroom home last changed hands for $1.4m in 2020, four years after its restoration was completed, when it was purchased by Mark Damant and Michelle Donnelly, of Little Boat Projects. As the creative force behind Brisbane's Howard Smith Wharves along with a slew of other mixed-use projects, the couple had a deep appreciation for the historic home. Owen Architecture had worked with previous owners, Nicki and Michael Dalton, giving new life to the historic building which had served as the Wynnum Fire Station from 1938 to 2004. The project scooped regional and national titles, including the prestigious John Dalton Award for Brisbane's Building of the Year in 2016. Marketing agent Christine Rudolph, of Ray White New Farm, said the home was a local landmark which blended its past with a new era of modern coastal living. Ms Rudolph said the property would ideally suit a family who appreciated beautiful design. 'This really is a Bayside landmark,' she said. 'The current custodians are quite an incredible couple themselves as the creative force behind many of Brisbane's new landmarks such as the Howard Smith Wharves, and while they did not do the original renovation, they have certainly done further work to the property since they purchased it several years ago off market. 'The Bayside Fire Station is a striking piece of Brisbane's civic and architectural history, and now a spectacular family home, sitting high on a 1,215sqm parcel across three lots with sweeping views across Moreton Bay and its islands.' One of only four brick fire stations of its kind built in Brisbane, the home's history lived on through a careful design preserving original features including the iconic firefighter's pole -—every kid's dream home feature — along with old equipment panels and interior wheel tracks. Red accents on the front doors and a terracotta-tiled roof are other nods to the past. The engine room was redesigned as an expansive open-plan living space, while bi-fold doors connect to outdoors, where there's a large backyard, brick pizza oven and fruit orchard. Aussie capital named top two city in the world Downstairs also hosts a library lounge and separate guest wing with study, while four bedrooms and two bathrooms are upstairs along with a lounge and balcony taking in beautiful bay views. PropTrack data shows house prices in Wynnum were up 17.7 per cent over the past 12 months, to a median of $1.295m.
