Oberdorf won't be included in Germany squad for women's Euro 2025

Germany's Lena Oberdorf in action during the UEFA European Championship Women's qualifier soccer match between Germany and Poland at Ostseestadion. Sebastian Gollnow/dpa Bayern Munich midfielder Lena Oberdorf won't be included in the Germany squad for the women's Euro 2025 in Switzerland this summer, the German Football Federation (DFB) said on Wednesday. The player ruptured the cruciate ligament in her knee in July last year. Advertisement "She is on a good path, but the Euros are too early for her," coach Christian Wück said in a DFB statement. "We want to give her time to prepare fully and look forward to seeing her again in the new season," he added. Wück will name his squad for the tournament on June 12. The midfielder hasn't played a single match since her injury. However, she was included the Germany squad for the Nations League matches against the Netherlands last Friday and against Austria on Tuesday, and trained with the national team. It was important "that we have Obi here with us again so that we can fully assess her performance," Wück explained. The DFB officials had previously agreed with Bayern that Oberdorf would not play in the Nations League matches.

Germany's Oberdorf, and her coach, hope she will be fit for Euros

Germany's Oberdorf, and her coach, hope she will be fit for Euros Germany's Lena Oberdorf in action during the UEFA European Championship Women's qualifier soccer match between Germany and Poland at Ostseestadion. Sebastian Gollnow/dpa Midfielder Lena Oberdorf and her coach Christian Wück have not given up hope that she will be fit to play for Germany at the women's Euros in July. Oberdorf has returned to partial team training at her club Bayern Munich from a cruciate knee ligament tear she sustained ahead of last year's Paris Olympics where Germany won the bronze medal. Advertisement But the 23-year-old will also need some matches to be ready for the July 2-27 tournament in Switzerland where Germany play Denmark, Sweden and Poland in the group stage. There are only four more matchdays in the women's Bundesliga, Bayern are also in the Cup final, and the national team has two more games in the run-up, on May 20 against the Netherlands and June 3 against Austria. Oberdorf badly wants to make it to the Euros but also told Sky TV that "I must see how it is with the knee, and whether I can still have games with Bayern." Wück told daily Wolfsburger Allgemeine that he knows from personal experience how difficult it is to come back from such a grave injury. Advertisement "In the end the deciding factor is how the knee reacts. It would be good if she could have two or three games for Bayern this season," Wück said. Chelsea's Sjoeke Nüsken has played well lately in Oberdorf's holding six position, but she can't quite match Oberdorf's power. Tuesday's Nations League reverse fixture against Scotland in Wolfsburg will give Wück further indications about his midfield - especially for a scenario with Obderdorf not fit for the Euros - and other areas. Germany won the first meeting 4-0 in Dundee on Friday to remain top of Group A3, but Wück was not fully satisfied with the performance as he criticised too many mistakes, especially in the first half.

German women's team happy with clean sheet but improvement needed

Germany players celebrate their side's first goal during the UEFA Women's Nations League soccer match between Scotland and Germany at Tannadice Park. Andrew Milligan/PA Wire/dpa German women's coach Christian Wück was happy with a clean sheet in a 4-0 Nations League victory in Scotland although he saw room for improvement in Tuesday's reverse fixture and beyond. Germany were far from glorious in the first half in Dundee on Friday night despite going 2-0 up from Elisa Senss in the opening minute and an own goal by Sophie Howard. Advertisement The second half was better and two more strikes within three minutes from Cora Zicai and Lea Schüller settled the affair in Dundee in favour of the Group A1 leaders. "Let's say: we kept a clean sheet, and all is good," Wück told broadcasters ZDF. Wück was furious with his players on several occasions in the first half, saying that "we weren't precise enough" and speaking of "too many easy mistakes." Sanss admitted that "we were a little too static" in the first half but then "much more dynamic after the break." Germany host Scotland on Tuesday in Wolfsburg before final matches against the Netherlands on May 20 and Austria on June 3. Advertisement They are also the last matches ahead of Euro 2025 in July in Switzerland, where Germany play Denmark, Poland and Sweden in the group stage. "Not everything is perfect, but I think we took another good step towards the Euros," captain Giulia Gwinn said.

Germany women's coach Wück expected job to be 'a little easier'

Coach of the women's German football team Horst Hrubesch, gesticulates during the UEFA European Championship qualifier soccer match between Germany and Poland at Ostseestadion. German women's national team coach Christian Wueck admitted on Thursday that he still faces a lot of work ahead of the Euro 2025 tournament in July. Sebastian Gollnow/dpa German women's national team coach Christian Wück admitted on Thursday that he still faces a lot of work ahead of the Euro 2025 tournament in July. "I expected it to be a little easier," Wück said on the eve of Friday's Nations League group match in Scotland, with the reverse fixture on Tuesday in Germany. Advertisement And when asked where he sees the team on a scale from 0 to 10, he said: "I would give it a 6.5 to 7." Wück, who took the job in autumn, however also said he sees the team "on a good path. "I think we have started a development ... which is backed by the players. We are working intensely on behaviour that can also be contrary to those at the club," he said. Wück said that recent heavy Champions League exits of Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg "also don't help because they dent the confidence of the players a little bit." The team has problems in defence where Wolfsburg's Kathrin Hendrich and Janina Minge as well as Manchester City's Rebecca Knaak will miss both games in Dundee and Wolfsburg, and Eintracht Frankfurt's Sara Doorsoun is also not available on Friday. After the games against Scotland, Wück has only the remaining Nations League fixtures against the Netherlands on Mai 20 and Austria on June 3 to prepare for the Euros in Switzerland, where Germany play Denmark, Poland and Sweden in the group stage.

Berger to be Germany's goalkeeper for women's Euros

Ann-Katrin Berger will be Germany's starting goalkeeper at the women's Euros in Switzerland in July, coach Christian Wück said on Tuesday. The 34-year-old helped Germany to Olympic bronze in Paris in August before Wück took over. "She will go into the Euros as the number one. In other words, she will get playing time from now on," Wück told reporters on Tuesday ahead of the Nations League matches against Scotland on April 4 and 8. Wück has so far used Berger, who plays for the US club Gotham FC, as well as Stina Johannes from Eintracht Frankfurt, Ena Mahmutovic from Bayern Munich and Sophia Winkler from Essen during his tenure. Winkler has suffered a cruciate knee ligament tear and is not an option for the Euros. "All those who have had opportunities have delivered good performances but have not been without mistakes," Wück said about the keeper candidates. Speaking specifically about Berger, he noted: "She exudes the kind of confidence that a young goalkeeper might need more time to develop." Berger and Johannes, along with Rafaela Borggräfe from Freiburg, have been nominated for the matches against Scotland, while Mahmutovic is only on standby. Bayern's Maria Luisa Grohs, who recently made her comeback after overcoming cancer, could still enter the race for a squad spot for the record European champions. Berger also overcame thyroid cancer in 2017. Germany, who drew 2-2 against the Netherlands and defeated Austria 4-1 in Nations League games in February, face Scotland next month in Dundee and in Wolfsburg. Injured players Rebecca Knaak from Manchester City and Kathrin Hendrich from Wolfsburg miss out. Forward Franziska Kett from Bayern has been called up for the first time, while club team-mate Sydney Lohmann returns to the 23-player squad, which is led by captain and Bayern full back Giulia Gwinn. Paulina Krumbiegel from Juventus and Freiburg's Cora Zicai are also back. Wück has high hopes for Bayern's Lena Oberdorf, who had previously been a key figure in Germany's midfield. The 23-year-old is recovering from a cruciate ligament tear and Wück is optimistic she will be fit in time for the Euros. "With Obi, it's simply a matter of the timing potentially working out, it should work out," he said.
