Striking Genesis concepts showcase future of luxury brand

Two striking new Genesis concepts spawned from the Korean luxury brand's G90 flagship showcase its 'new chapter'. Unveiled at the Seoul motor show, the X Gran Coupé and X Gran Convertible have been created to 'demonstrate the brand's future position' and arrive 10 years after it was spun out of Hyundai. Both concepts clearly resemble the donor limousine (such as with the classic twin-lightbar design up front and at the back) and have been created to show that there is a place within the Genesis lineup in which to to expand with niche model derivatives. 'In a time when people think only about one single typology of vehicle I think it is important to make sure that we have different [variants] in the lineup," design boss Luc Donckerwolke told journalists at the motor show. "We don't do show cars for the sake of doing show cars. 'The reasoning behind [the concepts] is making derivatives of the G90 which share the same platform, so it is cars that could be integrated into the lineup; but the business case will basically be the one that shows [if it will be] - but we have had enough interest to be positive about it." What's more, features such as the frameless windows, pillarless doors and the extensive use of quilted materials inside appear near-production ready, also suggesting the cars are showcasing elements that will trickle down to road cars. The pair build on the trio of two-door X Concepts that Genesis revealed in 2021 and 2022, in what is described by Genesis as a way to 'express the brand's facets of exclusive sportiness and luxurious elegance'. That luxury positioning is taken a step further here. For example, both new concepts are littered with crystals across the steering wheel, centre console and air vents that when hit by sunlight 'create captivating displays'. The cloth-roofed convertible in particular is presented in a way to 'capture the spirit of fine wines', with an exterior colour that represents pressed grapes and an interior that 'echoes the deep, rich hues of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Livorno region of Italy'. This luxury positioning can also be seen from the aluminium-spoked steering wheel, screens that are embedded into the rear of the front seats and the use of microperforated olive wood. Underneath, Donckerwolke confirmed the cars use the short-wheelbase configuration of the G90's platform and, although they're just static show cars, draw power from the same 409bhp mild-hybrid setup centered around a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine. The G90 - currently only sold in Germany and Switzerland in Europe – isn't offered as an electric car and no plans to electrify it have been announced. Genesis recently rolled back on plans to go electric-only and instead will bolster its global line-up with hybrids. ]]>

Genesis Unveils Two Breathtaking Futuristic Concepts

Genesis recently revealed its X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible concepts based on its full-size G90 sedan for the first time at the Seoul Mobility Show in Goyang, Korea. The automaker described its concepts, which foreshadow its upcoming approach in the luxury segment, as derivatives of its flagship G90 model. These concepts' front ends contain Genesis' signature Two-Line headlights, which extend toward each model's crest grille and widened fenders. The grille's 3D meshes draw influence from woven metal strings ordered in diamond-shaped Two-Line patterns. Front lower air intakes are wide with grille meshes, and the extended hoods add another dynamic element. These concepts' steeper windshields accentuate their sporty profile and complement the lower roof heights. Frameless windows contribute to the vehicles' refined aesthetics, while doors are lengthened for easier entry and exit. The X Gran Convertible's wheels distinguish themselves with sculptural cross-sections contrasting with Two-Line spokes, while its coupe counterpart contains a five double-spoke design and a layered treatment on the secondary spokes. Instead of a positive or negative bumper offset, Genesis smoothens these models' rears to form a more cohesive look directing attention toward the Two-Line taillights. The tailpipes are wide, slim, and rectangular; horizontal brightwork creates an eye-catching exterior technology for the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible concepts includes hidden retractable rear cameras and touchless trunk operation that a driver activates with a hand gesture. Mediterranean olive trees inspire the X Gran Coupe concept's interior, and the door sill plate sports the model's name. The coupe's steering wheel, center console, and ventilation systems reveal details like crystals, which reflect sunlight. Separate noteworthy touches in the Genesis X Gran Coupe's cabin consist of model-exclusive floor mats, a tunnel section with quilted stitching, olive-themed ambient lighting, chrome-free leather made from naturally tanned material using wastewater from Italian olive oil production, and a fully quilted leather roof. The convertible concept's interior contains a shade reminiscent of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes that create a monochrome effect against the crystal detailing. Both concepts' steering wheels have an aluminum third bottom spoke and front seats with embedded screens, rear passenger air vents, and integrated displays. Genesis will showcase its X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible concepts at the Seoul Mobility Show from April 4 to 13. During this time, visitors can also see Genesis' new half-scale GMR-001 Hypercar as the automaker prepares to compete in the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the 2027 IMSA Sportscar Championship. While Genesis' X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible are concepts, they look close enough to something you'd see in a car dealership today or at least a few years from now. It's also essential to remember that the GV80 Coupe is an example of a Genesis production model that was initially a concept. The fact that Genesis' X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible concepts are based on the automaker's flagship G90 is another positive indicator that production for these two designs is a distinct possibility.

Genesis G90 Stuns With Striking Coupe and Convertible Concepts

Genesis has revealed two breathtaking new design studies — the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible — during an official presentation in South Korea. These stunning concepts, rooted in the 2025 Genesis G90 flagship sedan, continue the brand's tradition of crafting eye-catching luxury showpieces that spark imagination more than mass production plans. Much like Cadillac's approach to its concept cars, Genesis has become known for pushing design boundaries, even if these efforts rarely make it to dealership floors. The new X Gran Coupe and Convertible serve as spiritual successors to the highly praised Genesis X and X Convertible revealed in 2021 and 2022. Though equally jaw-dropping and seemingly ready for the road, these latest models are design statements — visual explorations rather than production commitments. They represent what Genesis refers to as a 'moment of reflection,' a creative pause from the Hyundai-owned luxury marque. Both models debuted at the 2025 Seoul Mobility Show, sharing the stage with the updated 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the brand-new Nexo hydrogen crossover. Clearly derived from the underpinnings of the 2025 Genesis G90, the Gran Coupe and Gran Convertible swap out the four-door format for sleeker, sportier profiles. In the case of the convertible, all press imagery shows the vehicle with the top down, though it's understood that a soft fabric roof is tucked into the rear. Visually, these concepts wouldn't feel out of place among the elite — they carry the elegance and presence seen in models like the Bentley Continental GT and GTC, or the Lexus LC and LC Convertible. In addition to their dramatic exteriors, the cabins also receive a bespoke treatment. The Gran Coupe interior draws inspiration from Mediterranean olive trees, featuring green tones and matching leather upholstery. Meanwhile, the Gran Convertible's cabin embraces deep blue hues that pay homage to the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes of Livorno, Italy. Since its establishment as an independent luxury brand a decade ago, Genesis has sold over 1.3 million vehicles globally. The lineup is predominantly composed of sedans and SUVs, although niche variants like the G70 Shooting Brake have appeared in select regions such as Europe. For Genesis to stand shoulder to shoulder with German powerhouses like Mercedes-Benz and BMW, it must continue elevating its brand image with bold, aspirational designs. While coupes and convertibles may not move high volumes, the presence of a flagship halo model could draw more attention — and customers — to Genesis showrooms, even if most buyers end up choosing models like the GV70. Hyundai, with its considerable financial resources, can afford to pursue such ambitious styling exercises without expecting immediate returns. If Genesis has its sights set on rivaling luxury tourers like the BMW 8 Series, these concept vehicles mark a compelling step in that direction. Still, the transition from concept to production involves steep challenges — from R&D and tooling to managing limited demand for two-door vehicles in today's SUV-dominated market. Until those hurdles are cleared, enthusiasts can continue to admire these Genesis G90-based concepts for what they are — bold expressions of design, and powerful symbols of where Genesis might be headed.

Read the Full Story Genesis has revealed its newest pair of X Concept models, though unlike the EV concepts of the past, the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible look like they could be headed for production. Genesis revealed a new pair of X Concept cars based on the brand's flagship G90 luxury sedan. The first is labeled the X Gran Coupe concept. It blends the roof and cant rail lines to better resemble a sports car. Drawing inspiration from olive trees, it matches the vibrant green exterior paint with a matching green and brown wood interior. The second concept is called the X Gran Convertible. With the soft-top down, we can see that Genesis pushed the beltline further back to provide separation between the body and the roof. Instead of the olive tree, the X Gran Convertible is inspired by Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, leading it to take on a more bold color scheme. Genesis G90 Flagship Sedan Sprouts Two New Concept Cars

Genesis has revealed two new concept cars based on the full-size luxury sedan, both of which appear production-ready. One is called the X Gran Coupe Concept, which blends shades of green with warm brown tones and draws inspiration from the Mediterranean olive tree. Called the X Gran Convertible Concept, the other car pairs a rich violet with a deep blue interior, pulling its inspiration from the Livorno wine region in Italy. The 2021 Genesis X Concept arrived as a beautiful declaration from the luxury automaker, one that tied the "Two-Lines" lighting elements to the brand. While stunning, the original X was, as its name stated, a concept. Now, Genesis has revealed two new concept cars based on its flagship model, the G90 full-size luxury sedan—and both look like they could enter production imminently. One concept is named the X Gran Coupe, with the other labeled the X Gran Convertible. The relation to the G90 is immediately apparent, with both concepts co-opting many of the sedan's styling cues: the Two-Lines headlights are back, as are the two-line taillights. The concepts aren't mirror images of the production G90, though, and the diamond-shaped front grille that sits lower on the front fascia is now flanked by a pair of additional air intakes. The front fenders have been widened too, and the rear bumper is smoothed out to better accentuate the taillight design. In the Gran Coupe Concept, the roof and cant rail design were merged, which Genesis says helps it resemble the canopy of a sports car. We haven't been able to see the Gran Coupe Convertible Concept with the roof up, but with the top down, we can see the beltline has been pushed further back to separate the body from the soft top. According to Genesis, the Gran Coupe Concept draws its inspiration from Mediterranean olive trees. The green exterior paint is paired with a matching green and brown interior adorned with an olive wood veneer that is finished with a microperforated design to resemble an olive branch. The X Gran Convertible Concept also gets its inspiration from the Mediterranean, though it goes a bit more bold with the color combination. The resplendent violet exterior takes aesthetic cues from the color of pressed grapes, with the deep blue interior specifically inspired by Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Italy's Livorno region, according to Genesis. Genesis's reveal was devoid of any mention of powertrain, which is interesting considering that previous X concepts have used an unspecified electric powertrain. These new concepts are based on the brand's current flagship model. Coupled with the near-production-ready look, we think there's a chance Genesis decides to put these concepts into production as high-end offshoots of the G90 lineup. As long as they include the X Gran Convertible's color scheme, we're in.
