Sony's WH-1000XM6 are finally here to raise the bar – and they bring back this much-missed feature
Sony's long-awaited WH-1000XM6 wireless noise-canceling headphones are here and – as you'll hear – I think they're a very tasty package indeed. Yes, there are the class-leading improvements to sound quality and noice cancelling that you'd expect but crucially they bring back one ace feature that was missing from 2022's WH-1000XM5. They fold. Yep – once again Sony's flagship wireless headphones are foldable. We've been lucky enough to review them too – check out what our writer Esat Dedezade thought about them in our full Sony WH-1000XM6 review. Despite several leaks Sony has managed to keep the detail of the new headphones mostly under wraps, even if it was heavily rumored that they would hit streets soon before Sony itself confirmed a new launch was coming. I can now reveal that they'll launch later this month for $450/£400/€450. It's a high price, but that's what premium headphones are regularly costing now. Despite the older XM5s still sounding great, sound quality for the XM6s has been further improved thanks to various enhancements with the circuitry, even extending to new solder that contains gold. There are new 30mm drivers, too, and it's all powered by the latest-gen HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3 . The WH-1000XM6 now support Hi-Res Audio Wireless as well as DSEE Extreme. 360 Reality Audio Upmix for Cinema also delivers spatial audio. Noise-canceling has also been revamped thanks to a newly designed Adaptive NC Optimiser. A Scene-based Listening feature adjusts both the music and noise cancellation based on your activity and location. Comfort has been enhanced, too, thanks to a wider vegan leather headband. Again, there are soft leather earpads, noiseless movement and fingerprint-resistant material has been used. Call quality has had a power-up thanks to six beamforming mics helped by software tech that nowadays we seem legally bound to call 'enhanced by AI'. Indeed, there are 12 mics on the headphones in total, three more than on the XM5s. There's also the nice option of mute from the headset (configured via the app). They'll also support multi-point pairing as you'd expect, while they can also now auto-switch. Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast are also supported as well for ultra-low latency listening. Aside from the similar weight to the XM5s (252g vs 250g) the only key spec that remains unchanged (and that I think matters) is battery life which is stuck at 30 hours. Although it's still pretty good, I'm now seeing rivals above this. The headphones are available in three matt colors – black and silver (which is basically an off-white) as well as midnight blue.

Sony's XM6 over-ears get an official release date – and they're right around the corner
Not to sound like a broken record, but the Sony WH-1000XM5 really are a stellar set of cans. They're some of, if not the best noise-canceling headphones money can buy. Now, the hotly anticipated XM6 headphones are set to arrive as a follow-up. Better yet, we've finally got an official release date – and the cans are right around the corner. After Dealabs shared a not-so-subtle leak involving Amazon Spain and a Reddit user with an eye for pulled product pages, Sony has come out and officially said what we've all been waiting for. The next pair of its ridiculously popular noise-cancelling headphones, the WH-1000XM6, will be unveiled on 15 May. The launch will take place at 5pm BST/12pm ET. It doesn't look like there's a live stream to follow along with, but expect the news to drop everywhere (including here at Stuff) at that time. Sony's WH-1000X line is basically the iPhone of headphones at this point. Every model gets lapped up by the masses, and with good reason. The XM5 was more evolution than revolution – slightly better noise cancelling, a design facelift, and just enough of a spec bump to make you feel like your XM4s were looking a bit tired. So expectations for the XM6s are pretty high. According to the leak, the XM6s pack a new QN3 HD processor – supposedly 7x faster than the QN1 chip in the XM5s. If it means genuinely better noise cancelling, we're in for something exciting this time. Plus, there's a new six-mic AI beamforming system for calls. It should mean you'll actually sound like a human being and not a muffled ghost on Zoom. There's also still a headphone jack present. No word yet on battery life improvements or other niceties, but Sony's track record suggests we'll see some polish. The WH-1000XM6 will launch officially on 15 May. Thanks to the leak, we can expect pricing to start at $450 in the US (a $50 bump), and €388 in Europe. Expect them to be available to buy immediately after the launch.

Sony just confirmed possible WH-1000XM6 launch date — here's when the ANC headphones will be unveiled
Sony is planning to unveil the WH-1000XM6 headphones to the world in a matter of days, according to a teaser image the company posted in Australia. As spotted by Android Authority, the Japanese company has confirmed it will reveal the headphones during a livestream next week on Thursday, May 15. Next week looks to be a good week for tech reveals; Samsung is also going to show off its S25 Edge smartphone on Monday, May 12. Fans have been waiting a little longer for Sony's cans than Samsung's new phone. The WH-1000XM6s have been in development for the last three years and are sure to be one of the best noise cancelling headphones you can buy when they go on sale. We're huge fans of the WH-1000XM5 headphones here at Tom's Guide and rate them ahead of the Bose QuietComfort Ultra or the Apple AirPods Max when it comes to the best headphones overall. The Instagram post seen by Android Authority shows the outline of a pair of headphones alongside the May 15 date and the time: 2am AEST — which translates to 12pm EST/ 9am PST/5pm BST on May 13. While Sony stops short of actually name-checking the XM6s in the post — we get #ForTheMusic instead — it's not hard to surmise what's being announced. Earlier this week the specs for the headphones also leaked in full ahead of the announcement. An Amazon listing in Spain was spotted on Reddit, confirming the headphones will launch with an upgraded noise-cancelling processor called the QN3 HD. This is believed to be seven times faster than the QN1 chip in the XM5s. In practice, it'll translate to better noise cancelling and improved sound quality. The upgrade should result in better noise cancelling and perhaps sound quality. It also looks like it has an AI-powered six-microphone beamforming system for calls, and still comes with a headphone jack. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. can't come soon enough for anyone looking to pick up what's sure to be one of the best headphones you can buy. There's been nothing official from Sony, of course, but a fresh leak seems to confirm the imminent arrival of the over-ear WH-1000XM6 headphones. According to an update from The Walkman Blog, Sony has been granted Apple's Made for iPhone/iPad certification for a pair of headphones with the model number YY2984. This model number has previously been linked with the WH-1000XM6s and could mean we're getting close to a reveal. Apple will typically publish MiFi certifications shortly before a device's release and prior rumors have suggested a reveal window of May, even if the actual launch occurs later this year. Even if we don't get any more word from Sony, we may start to see more leaks appear in the coming weeks as the headphones get closer to primetime. The team over at The Walkman Blog has already divined a lot of what to expect from the rumored XM6s from an earlier FCC filing relating to the headphones. It's expected they'll boast detachable earcups, a 3.8V battery rating with fast charge ability. While the rating is the same as the WH-1000XM5s, the blog points out that this doesn't mean the capacity will be. For example, the XM5s jumped from the 1,100mAh of the XM4s up to 1,200mAh capacity, so there's still hope for a better battery performance. Digging into the illustration that accompanies the filing (above), The Walkman Blog suggests we could be looking at the same 30mm drivers behind a slight redesign of those aforementioned detachable earcups — as well as possibly a slightly altered hinge. Keeping with the rumored specs for a moment, the report says we'll see a Mediatek SoC powering the headphones with Bluetooth 5.3 support and a bump in antenna gain from the current 1.6 dBi up to 2.91 dBi. So far, so good. It's not an understatement to say the audio team here at Tom's Guide are rubbing our hands in anticipation for the XM6 headphones. Sony's current WH-1000XM5s are getting a little long in the tooth, but are still one of our top recommendations for anyone looking for a great pair of noise-cancelling headphones that balance price, performance, and battery life. So you can bet we're already getting our test track playlist in order ready for when Sony finally decides to reveal its next pair.

The sequel to Sony's best headphones could be even more expensive — what we know
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Sony's WH-1000XM5 headphones are the best headphones you can buy, because they're good at just about everything you need from them. But that may not be the case for much longer, with leaks suggesting the WH-1000XM6 headphones are coming later this month. And now we might know how much they're going to cost. According to leaker Roland Quandt, over on BlueSky, Sony is probably going to increase the price of the XM6 by 10% in the European market. Presumably, he means the original €419 price tag, rather than the current discounted price. In that case, it means the XM6 would cost around €460. If that price hike extends to other markets, including the U.S, it means buyers are looking at a price tag of around $440. Assuming tariffs don't come into force and increase that figure in the process. Quandt also claims that the headphones will be available in silver, black and Midnight Blue. No sign of the XM5's Smokey Pink hue, so those of you hoping for a pair of XM6s in light pink may be out of luck. Quandt expects the headphones to arrive "soon" but didn't go into further details. Though if earlier reveals are anything to go by, Sony could officially announce these headphones before the end of May. According to a deep dive by The Walkman Blog, there are plenty of things to expect from the XM6 headphones when they arrive — the first being Made for iPhone certification. That effectively means the headphones have been tested and approved by Apple, and here's hoping it means the XM6s will have better support for Apple's Find My feature. The blog also reports, based on various regulatory document leaks, that the headphones will offer fast charging, a 3.8V battery rating and detachable earcups. It also looks like the XM5s will have the same 30mm drivers as the XM5. Other rumored changes include Bluetooth 5.3 support, a boost in antenna gain to 2.91 dBi and a MediaTek system on chip powering everything. Hopefully, if rumors on the reveal are to be believed, we should be finding out for sure in the coming weeks. Be sure to check out our Sony WH-1000XM6 hub for all the latest news and rumors.
