Xaver Schlager out injured for several weeks

Xaver Schlager out injured for several weeks RB Leipzig midfielder Xaver Schlager will be missing for several weeks due to suffering another injury with the national team. Schlager has gained a muscle injury in his left thigh, which was the result of an MRI examination in Leipzig. Marco Rose recently welcomed Schlager back to the Leipzig team after recovering from his second knee injury in ten months to play against Borussia Dortmund before the recent international fixtures but did not make an appearance from the bench in that match. Advertisement Instead, he was given some minutes from the bench in Austria's 1-1 draw against Serbia in the Nations League 1st leg fixture, as he entered the pitch in the 77th minute. This now seems to have been a return that was too soon for the midfielder. 'The new injury hits us very hard, especially Xaver himself' said Marcel Schäfer, RB Leipzig's sporting director. 'He worked extremely hard for his comeback and gave everything to be able to help us with his qualities in the final spurt of the season. 'He was supposed to get his last match fitness with the national team, but now he is forced to take another break. We give Xaver all the support he needs now. Of course, it's annoying that we have another injury to report after an international break.' Advertisement Schlager has made just four appearances in the Bundesliga this season and will be aiming for a return before the 2024/25 campaign comes to an end with just eight Bundesliga games remaining. His team are also in the DFB-Pokal semi-final against Stuttgart next Wednesday, with the final taking place on 24th May, which Schlager could return for if recovery is successful. RB Leipzig midfielder flirts with Premier League move

Like many other players, Xaver Schlager would like to play in the English Premier League at some point. The 27-year-old midfielder made no secret of his dream in an interview with Sky Austria. "I'll say it openly and honestly: the Premier League is the top league everyone wants to play in because it's so spectacular," said Schlager. However, he also pointed out that he doesn't want to leave Leipzig at any price, as he feels very comfortable at the Bundesliga club. 'I feel very good in Leipzig. When you're healthy and fit, it's a very good thing. That's what I want to have at the moment, and what's important for me now is to play and have fun. Then we can take our time and see what the future holds.' It was recently reported that Leipzig are keen to keep hold of Schlager and are seeking to extend his contract beyond 2026. The Austria international recently returned to full training after a lengthy knee injury.

Leipzig to extend midfielder's contract in summer

Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg can report that RB Leipzig and Xaver Schlager are in the midst of contract negotiations. No breakthrough has been reached yet, but the Lower Saxony club are determined to extend the Austrian's stay at the club. The 27-year-old's current deal runs until 2026 – Die Roten Bullen don't want to enter the final year and risk losing him on a free transfer. A decision between both parties is expected in the summer when the current season ends. It has been a tough campaign for the midfielder thus far who has managed just 4 appearances after a cruciate ligament tear and persistent knee problems.

RB Leipzig vs. St. Pauli

Leipzig begin matchday 21 in fourth position despite experiencing an underwhelming run of results in the Bundesliga. Die Roten Bullen have not won a top-flight match since recording a 4-2 home victory over Werder Bremen on January 12. They followed that result with a narrow defeat to Stuttgart, before they played out three consecutive Bundesliga draws with Bochum, Bayer Leverkusen and Union Berlin. They could at least take some encouragement from the fact that last Saturday's goalless affair against Union ended a run of six league matches without a clean sheet. After picking up a point at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, Leipzig will now return to the Red Bull Arena, where they have won two of their last three home league matches (D1). The hosts will be desperate to score the first goal, having won all four home league games this season where they have opened the scoring. Leipzig have already recorded a home victory over St. Pauli, recording a 4-2 win in October's DFB-Pokal tie. They are now looking to beat St. Pauli for the first time in the Bundesliga after playing out a goalless draw in September's reverse fixture. The hosts are unable to call upon the injured quartet of Benjamin Henrichs, Xaver Schlager, Assan Ouédraogo and Yussuf Poulsen. St. Pauli head into the weekend with a seven-point buffer to the bottom three after putting together a positive run of results in recent weeks. Alexander Blessin's side recorded a 2-0 away win over Heidenheim, before they claimed a commanding 3-0 victory in a home clash against Union Berlin. St. Pauli appeared to be on course to clinch a third consecutive win in last Saturday's meeting with Augsburg. Noahkai Banks's 17th-minute own goal gave St. Pauli the lead for the majority of the contest, only for Mert Kömür to score an 83rd-minute equaliser to deny them all three points. Nevertheless, they will still be pleased with the fact they have avoided defeat in each of their last three matches. St. Pauli will now head on the road with hopes of recording back-to-back away league victories for the first time this season after sweeping past Union in their most recent away trip. This will be St. Pauli's first visit to the Red Bull Arena since recording a narrow 1-0 win in a fixture in August 2015. St. Pauli are without the services of Robert Wagner, Manolis Saliakas, Morgan Guilavogui, Sascha Burchert, Simon Zoller and Karol Mets. Meanwhile, Connor Metcalfe is closing in on a return to action, but Sunday's contest will come too soon for the Australian midfielder.
