Xcel customers to receive $5 credit on monthly bill

SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO) — South Dakotan Xcel Energy customers will receive a $5 monthly credit to their bill starting in June, according to a news release from Xcel. Xcel Energy is moving forward with plans to deliver $25 million back to North Dakota and South Dakota customers on their bills through federal tax credits on the energy generated by the company's nuclear fleet. Former state worker accused of forging marijuana card Xcel Energy's two nuclear power plants, Monticello and Prairie Island, together account for nearly 25% of the electricity used by customers across the company's five-state Upper Midwest system, a news release said. This is the first time customers will see savings from the federal tax credit on nuclear energy generation, which the company advocated for in recent law. Starting this month, the average residential customer in South Dakota will receive $5.08 a month in savings, totaling $50.80 through February 2026. Xcel Energy services most of the Sioux Falls area, along with other areas of southeastern South Dakota. 'Our nuclear power plants have produced safe, reliable, always-available electricity for our customers across the Upper Midwest for more than 50 years. Now, tax credits on the energy they generate will produce savings for our customers,' Ryan Long, president of Xcel Energy—Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, said in a news release. 'Nuclear energy is an important piece of American energy security. It helps us support economic growth in the Upper Midwest, deliver reliable and resilient electricity, and keep customers' bills as low as possible,' Long said in a release. A New Chapter for DansMusik Fest Following the resounding success of the inaugural DansMusik Fest in 2024, which drew over 25,000 attendees to witness a headline performance by world-renowned DJ Steve Aoki, Xcel Talent Agency is expanding the festival's scope to include a comprehensive dance convention. The 2024 event, co-organized with Kuadr Events, transformed Vlorë's Lungomare into a vibrant celebration of music and dance, boosting local tourism and establishing the city as an emerging cultural hub. Building on this momentum, the 2025 edition will feature a week-long program of pop-up performances, spontaneous dance battles, live music, and now, a dedicated dance convention designed to spotlight and nurture talent. 'DansMusik Fest is more than a festival—it's a movement to empower artists and foster cultural exchange,' said Aris Golemi, whose vision for Xcel International continues to redefine the entertainment landscape. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to join Xcel's roster, gaining access to the agency's extensive industry connections and personalized career guidance. 'We're looking for dancers who embody passion, professionalism, and a strong work ethic,' Golemi emphasized. 'Our goal is to connect Europe's brightest talents with opportunities to thrive on the global stage.' This initiative aligns with Xcel's mission to discover and nurture the next generation of stars, offering European dancers a rare chance to break into the competitive U.S. market. The agency's strategic partnership with other agencies further amplifies its ability to open doors for its clients across major markets like Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York, and Nashville. A Week of Dance and Cultural Exchange The dance convention at DansMusik Fest 2025 will be a dynamic addition to the festival's lineup, featuring master classes led by internationally acclaimed choreographers, workshops to refine technique, and opportunities for dancers to network with industry professionals. The event will also include pop-up performances and dance battles along Vlorë's scenic Lungomare, creating an immersive experience that celebrates the fusion of dance, music, and Albanian culture. 'Vlorë's rich cultural heritage and vibrant energy make it the perfect backdrop for this convention,' Golemi noted. 'We want dancers to leave inspired, empowered, and connected to a global community of creators.' The convention will also foster cultural exchange, with international artists and attendees collaborating to create memorable performances that highlight Vlorë's growing reputation as a cultural destination. Economic and Cultural Impact The addition of the dance convention is expected to further amplify the economic benefits seen during the 2024 festival, which saw sold-out accommodations and increased patronage for local businesses. By attracting dancers, choreographers, and industry professionals from across Europe and beyond, DansMusik Fest 2025 aims to position Vlorë as a must-visit destination for dance enthusiasts and tourists alike. Amazon pauses plan to build data center near Becker

Amazon has paused its plans to open a large data center near Xcel Energy Center's Sherco site in Becker, Minnesota. The pause was confirmed by Xcel Energy, and comes in the wake of discussions in the Minnesota Legislature to end a sales tax exemption on electricity consumed by data centers in the state. Xcel told Bring Me The News that Amazon had communicated it is "pausing those plans because of factors independent of our readiness to serve the site's electricity needs." In a statement Amazon spokesperson Duncan Neasham said: "We are constantly evaluating new locations based on customer demand. We sincerely appreciate the support we've received from both the public and state and local officials as we continue to evaluate this location." Amazon had bought a 350-acre site next to Sherco, with Xcel in the process of decommissioning its coal-fired plants and proceeding with long-term plans to build a huge solar farm on the property. Major tech companies are investing huge sums into power- and water-hungry data centers as it seeks to cope with the expansion of cloud computing and the proliferation and advancement of artificial intelligence. But their development has sparked backlash in parts of the country, such as in Farmington, Minnesota, where a proposed $5 billion data center park has been criticized by nearby residents who have concerns about power and water consumption and noise pollution. "The rapid pace of change in the data center industry is well documented. We continue to talk with other potential customers about locating their operations in Minnesota," Xcel Energy said. "We remain optimistic about serving new electricity demand from data centers in a way that benefits our existing customers and communities." The pause from Amazon comes as state lawmakers consider a series of regulations on data center construction, including the removal of some tax incentives for tech giants. MPR News reports one of the measures proposed by Gov. Tim Walz and the DFL would be to end the sales tax exemption on the electricity used by large-scale data centers, and described Amazon's pause in apparent reaction to that as "pretty bad lobbying." In an interview, Walz said that Minnesota has highly generous incentives for data centers, before adding: "But we have to balance our budget. And I think a lot of Minnesotans are saying, 'Well, you couldn't do a tax cut to my sales tax, but you could do a tax cut to (Amazon founder) Jeff Bezos?'" But news of Amazon's decision on Becker sparked criticism from Republican Sen. Andrew Mathews, who said Walz's proposal to end the sales tax exemption was "the final straw." "I'm incredibly frustrated that a major economic lifeline for the Becker community has effectively stalled," he said.
