Adorable grandmas sharing spring rolls take top prize at World Food Photography Awards
An image of five elderly women having a giggle while sharing spring rolls in a quiet corner of Sichuan has been crowned the world's best food photograph. Titled simply as "The Elderly Having Delicious Food", the heartwarming photo by Chinese photographer Xiaoling Li has taken the top prize at this year's World Food Photography Awards, beating nearly 10,000 entries from 70 countries. Shot in Shuangliu Ancient Town, the image captures what Li describes as a 'Dragon Gate formation' - a Chinese phrase for neighbours gathering to chat, gossip, and share stories over food. 'They eat the famous Sichuan snack 'spring rolls,'' says Li. 'Food makes these people happy; they enjoy a beautiful and joyful life.' To assert its clear dominance over TV viewing, precisely half of the Top 20 come from the streaming juggernaut. Nielsen, which historically charts broadcast viewership, has released multi-platform viewing figures for the first time for the 2024-25 TV season. Top of the list of 100, reported by Variety, is Netflix's Squid Game (27.1million viewers), closely followed by the streamer's British hit Adolescence (19million). Squid Game and Adolescence were also the top two shows among the Adult 18-49 demographic, considered the most important for broadcasters. From harvest to celebration: World Food Photography Awards winners announced
The winners of the World Food Photography Awards sponsored by Bimi have been announced, highlighting food photography across the globe. Yotam Ottolenghi, a renowned chef, restaurateur and food writer, revealed the winners at an event at the Mall Galleries, London. The awards showcase a diverse range of images across more than 25 categories, including ones dedicated to street food, cakes, innovation, drinks, food prep, photojournalism, harvest and much more. This year's contest saw more than 10,000 entries from 70 countries. The submissions were judged by an extensive panel that included photographers, magazine editors, creative directors, film directors, food retailers and chefs. The best overall winner earned a £5000 prize, along with an exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London. Category winners also have the opportunity to have their work displayed in the exhibition and each receives a trophy. There are individual prizes for each of the different categories as well. With thousands of entries from over 70 countries, the competition celebrates the very best food photography and videography from around the globe. At the heart of it all, of course, is food – a source of connection, creativity, and inspiration. Now in its 14th year, the Awards (sponsored by Tenderstem Bimi Broccolini) continue to shine a light on the rich diversity of food stories, capturing everything from growing and harvesting to cooking, sharing and simply enjoying a meal. Each image offers a window into different cultures and everyday moments, while also highlighting important issues connected to the food we cherish. This year's overall winner is Xiaoling Li with the image The Elderly Having Delicious Food. It was also the winner of the category: Food for the Family (supported by the Felix Project, a British charity that rescues surplus food and redistributes it to community organizations across London). "What a perfect winning image for our times," says Caroline Kenyon, founder of the World Food Photography Awards. "This beautifully framed shot captures five elderly women in Sichuan Province in China, reveling in good food with true friends. "The joy they have in each other's company is palpable, a powerful rebuke to those who would divide us. Color, composition, the variety of expressions while one determinedly plows on with their food – I defy anyone not to be uplifted by this photograph." New this year is the Jamie Oliver Youth Prize, named for the celebrity chef and food activist. In this category, young talents can enter the Awards and tell their unique food stories. The panel included names like Tom Athron, CEO of Fortnum and Mason; Rein Skullerud, senior photographer and photo editor at the United Nations World Food Programme; and Mogau Seshoene, chef and author. A free-to-enter exhibition of all the Finalist images will premiere at The Mall Galleries in London, England, running from 21 - 25 May. In Chinese photographer's winning entry in food-focused photo awards ‘the joy is palpable'
Chinese photographer Xiaoling Li has won a global food-focused photography competition with a heartwarming image showing elderly women enjoying spring rolls. The image, Elderly Having Delicious Food, was taken in Shuangliu Ancient Town in China's Sichuan province. 'The elderly ladies in the picture are 'setting up a Dragon Gate formation',' contest organisers quote Li as saying. 'This is an expression used in China to refer to neighbourhood friends coming together to chat, gossip and share stories. 'They eat the famous Sichuan 'spring rolls'. Food makes these people happy; they enjoy a beautiful and joyful life.' La Matassa. A Real Work of Craftsmanship by Diego Marinelli won the food in action category.
