Court proceedings become farewell tribute as lawyers honour Tengku Maimun

PUTRAJAYA: Lawyers today paid tribute to Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who retires tomorrow upon turning 66, the mandatory retirement age for judges. The tributes came after Tengku Maimun delivered her verdict on the case involving Malaysian United Democratic Alliance secretary-general Amir Hariri Abd Hadi, who had referred constitutional questions to the Federal Court. Moments later, senior lawyer Datuk Dr Gurdial Singh Nijar rose to express appreciation to Tengku Maimun and Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, who will also retire on Thursday. He said that under Tengku Maimun's leadership, the judiciary had regained the credibility it lost during the 1988 judicial crisis, which left a deep scar on the institution. "Since then until now, under both your leaderships, the judiciary's credibility has been restored and is now on par with the best judiciaries in the Commonwealth. "On the eve of your departure, we wish to thank you for the journey you have led us on to reach this level. "We can perfectly understand the clamour by a significant portion of the profession and others who engage with the courts. "They would have appreciated a little more time granted to you as leader of the bench. "It is for these reasons that the clamour arose, and not — as recently suggested — an attempt to politicise the issue. "Those who claimed it was a political move by the profession have failed to appreciate the role of the courts," he said. Meanwhile, lawyer Anand Raj, vice-president of the Malaysian Bar, expressed the Bar's deepest gratitude to Tengku Maimun for her exceptional service. He said that throughout her tenure, she had handled an impressive number of cases — 859, of which 93 were in the Federal Court, mostly during her time as chief justice. "YAA (Yang Amat Arif) has not only been a chief justice but a mentor, a pioneer, and an inspiration to countless lawyers, law students, and judges across the nation. "The Malaysian Bar wishes to express our profound gratitude for her visionary leadership, unwavering commitment to justice, and pioneering contributions to our legal system. "We also thank YAA for helping restore the judiciary from the lingering effects of the 1988 judicial crisis," he said. Anand said Tengku Maimun also oversaw the judiciary's transformation during the Covid-19 pandemic, which necessitated the transition to digitisation, a move that was successfully implemented. "Today, our courts are among the most technologically advanced, enhancing access to justice for all Malaysians," he said. He said that throughout her tenure, Tengku Maimun faced challenges with remarkable grace and integrity. "YAA's leadership during constitutional crises, including various legal challenges, demonstrated the judiciary's vital role as guardian of the constitution. "Under her guidance, the Malaysian judiciary proved it could withstand political pressures and constitutional stress tests while maintaining independence and integrity. "While lawyers may not win every case, we are appreciative that — win or lose — we can walk away knowing we were given a fair and proper hearing," he said. At the end of proceedings, Tengku Maimun, also speaking on behalf of Abang Iskandar, thanked everyone in court for their kind wishes. "The Bar Council stood behind us. "We appreciate the support given by everyone during times of need and the challenges we faced when the judiciary came under attack. "We could see that we were defended by the Bar and several other bodies. "We are most grateful and appreciative. We wish everyone all the best," she said.
