East Kilbride YM boss relishing 'momentous day', as club set for West of Scotland League debut

The former amatuer side will make their bow this weekend at Kirktonholme East Kilbride YM boss Graeme Robertson is hoping the town comes out to back his side on a 'momentous' day for the team this Saturday. ‌ The town's oldest football club make their debut in the West of Scotland Football League when they host Irvine Vics at Kirktonholme for a Fourth Division clash. ‌ YM have made the leap from amateur football to the WOSFL after being voted into the bottom tier of the Scottish football pyramid at the end of last season. ‌ And everyone at the Village outfit is brimming with anticipation for their big bow at this level. Gaffer Robertson, who led the team to the Caledonian Premier Division title last season, said: 'It will be a momentous day for the club and everyone is looking forward to it. 'All the volunteers will be out in force and planning is well ahead of schedule for Saturday's game. ‌ 'Hopefully the weather is good for us and we get a good support behind us. 'We've been absolutely flabbergasted by the response to season tickets - we've sold just over 100 so far - and there have been a lot of people in the town coming up to us to speak about it, so there is a lot of interest. ‌ 'Every game we've had in pre-season we've seen a really good crowd and we are really impressed with the response in our first season.' Irvine Vics will be one of the favourites for the title this term, having been relegated from the Third Division last term, and Robertson added: 'I think Irvine Vics could be our toughest game of the season. 'They just got relegated but they have been playing really good teams in pre-season and winning comfortably. It should be a good game.' ‌ YM have managed to hold on to most of their squad from last season's title-winning campaign, while also pinching players from near neighbours and Division Four rivals East Kilbride Thistle, who they host on August 2. 'We've kept most of the boys who won the Caledonian Premier Division last season and we've added a few experienced players who have played at this level so we hope that will stand us in good stead,' said Robertson. ‌ 'We've brought in three players from EK Thistle - Adam Edgar, Ryan Anderson and Lewis Gray - so they have made the move across the Village. 'We are also delighted to get Greg Miller from Kello Rovers. He was being chased by the likes of Port Glasgow, but he opted to join us because he can see what our plans here are. 'We are just trying to consolidate. It is a big step up from amateur to semi-professional so we need to try and find our feet in the first season, try to be as solid and hard to beat as possible. 'Our ambition is to do well within the West of Scotland League and see what happens.' Saturday's clash is a 2pm kick-off at Kirktonholme, with tickets priced £5 for adults, £3 for concessions and kids under-12 go free.

East Kilbride YM ace Barry Russell relishing EK Thistle rivalry in West of Scotland League

The defender will face his former side as EKYM embark on their WOSFL journey Barry Russell admits he questioned whether he should play on for another season at East Kilbride YM, but admits he is delighted he did as he gets to face former side East Kilbride Thistle in the West of Scotland League this season. ‌ YM were an amateur side until this summer when they were voted into the Fourth Division in the WOSFL, following Lowland League Broomhill folding and opening up a space at the bottom of the Scottish football pyramid. ‌ Now defender Russell - who helped YM win the Caledonian Premier League last term - has penned a one-year deal to stay at YM as they embark on their inaugural season in a setup that has the potential to take them into senior football. ‌ Russell has completed a local hat-trick by playing for YM, Thistle and, of course, East Kilbride FC where he was captain and famously skippered the side against Celtic in the 2016 Scottish Cup tie. Now 36, Russell says he had contemplated hanging up his boots but is now relishing a new challenge with YM and the chance to tackle Thistle, where he played at both ends of his career, starting out there in 2011, coming in on loan from EKFC in 2018 and joining the Jags again in 2022. He said: 'When it came to signing the contract I was thinking: Am I stupid to go another season!? ‌ 'I was 50/50 to keep playing because I keep getting niggling injuries. But I got a good run at things towards the end of last season and managed to get the YM Players' Player of the Year. 'I sat down and spoke to the manager [Graeme Robertson] and he wanted me to stay on, so I was happy to do that. ‌ 'If I manage to stay fit, I should be fine. I have played in this league before and I know what to expect and if I get through this season I'll be happy. 'With EK Thistle in the league I think it will be a good one. I had two spells at Thistle and played under Colin Mitchell, Jimmy Kerr, Alan Paterson and Aaron Connolly, so there's a good bit of history there. ‌ 'I've had a good few folk from Thistle wishing me luck, just not against them! 'You always look for your derbies and I'm really looking forward to that game. Hopefully a derby will get people down to watch it.' YM have actually raided the Jags this summer for their former captain Adam Edgar and Ryan Anderson, amid a new manager coming in at the Showpark. ‌ Stephen Kane has taken the reins there and a complete overhaul of the squad has taken place ahead of the sides facing each other on August 2 at Kirktonholme. Russell added: 'Thistle have got a brand new team this season so I think they will be pretty decent. 'We've got a good team as well with some of the players we've signed so I'm looking forward to it. It should be a tough league as well. ‌ 'It is good for the town to have another team into the West of Scotland League. 'We've taken a couple of their players in Adam Edgar and Ryan Anderson, so they are good players that will strengthen our side and provide good competition. ‌ 'Last season we had a team where the same guys would play but you need to be on your toes now. It is a bit different from the amateur game. 'At this level, when you are in there you need to fight to hold on to your position. 'We've got good young players who will be looking to keep the older ones on their toes.' ‌ YM will be a bit of an unknown quantity to many in the Fourth Division and Russell hopes that can work to their advantage. He said: 'I thought we were outstanding last season. A lot of sides will look at us and just think we are an amateur team but the players we have got have played at a higher level. 'Personally, I think we should be up in the top half of the table. ‌ 'But you don't want to sit in a league and just be comfortable. If anything, I think we'll go for it and see what happens at the end of the season. 'Our aim will be to go and put down a marker. 'Wishaw will be right up there as one of the favourites though. They have a good team and, having just been relegated, they will want to go straight back up.'

East Kilbride YM join West of Scotland Fourth Division to set up derby with EK Thistle next term

The club now has opportunity to reach the professional ranks after being voted in at the WOSFL AGM Long-established Amateur side East Kilbride YM will make the step up to the West of Scotland Football League next season after being voted into the Fourth Division for the 2025/26 campaign. In a huge development for the Kirktonholme side, it means the town's oldest football club - formed in 1921 - are now part of the Scottish football pyramid system and have the opportunity to climb their way into the senior ranks in the future. ‌ The club were voted in at the West of Scotland Football League AGM this afternoon and their under-19 side will compete in the West of Scotland Development League. ‌ The news comes just weeks after East Kilbride FC won promotion to play in the senior ranks in SPFL League Two next season. And YM's inclusion in the West of Scotland Fourth Division next term also means they will play a derby with the town's other major side, East Kilbride Thistle, who finished seventh in that league last season. YM won the Caledonian Premier Division - the Scottish Amateur top flight in the region - this season and also reached the final of the West Cup, so this marks a huge step up but it is one boss Graeme Robertson believes the club are ready for. He said: "East Kilbride YM FC are delighted to announce that at this afternoon's West of Scotland Football League AGM we were voted into the WoSFL for this coming season. "This is a culmination of a lot of hard work behind the scenes by the YM Committee which now provides a player pathway from EKYC into EKYM and the opportunity to play in a Senior Professional League which is part of the SFA Pyramid System. ‌ "The very succesfull YM Under 19s, who were an excellent EKYC team prior to last season, will move to become the EKYM WoSFL Development team playing in a professional Development League. "This is a crucial part of the whole project as it is the YM's intention to promote players from within the club to the Professional Senior side in the WoSFL. "With several players in the Senior side having came through the YC Youth setup, it highlights the success of the partnership with our good friends at YC within EK United, a true Community Club. "I would just like to thank everyone from the YM and YC who played their part in making today happen."

Wishaw tradesmen wanted to help restore one of town's famous old buildings

Members of Wishaw YMCA are asking for the community's help to restore the old YM building in the town's Main Street. Wishaw tradesmen and builders are wanted to help restore one of the town's famous old buildings to its former glory. Members of Wishaw YMCA are asking for the community's help to restore the old YM building in the town's Main Street. ‌ The YM was forced to close its doors in November 2018 after an unexpected visit from Scottish Fire and Rescue who deemed the building unsuitable. ‌ Before then it was a hub of the community for decades and now the current YMCA committee hope to restore the building. In a lengthy social media post, Wishaw YMCA state: 'The old Wishaw YMCA building has stood closed for too long. Once a hub of opportunity, connection, and support, it's now a space the community can't use — just when we need it most. 'For the past few years, we've explored every avenue to restore and renovate the building. Over the past 18 months, our hope was that a phased development would attract funding and allow us to gradually bring it back to life. 'But the reality has been harder than we imagined. 'The financial climate has shifted. Capital funding is increasingly limited. And yet — the need for accessible, neutral community space is greater than ever. ‌ 'So here's our new approach. We're putting full-scale renovation aside for now. Instead, we're focusing on what's achievable right now. 'That is making the building safe in its current layout; adding accessibility improvements like ramps and a compliant toilet and developing a plan that meets Building Standards and Scottish Fire & Rescue Service requirements. 'To do that, we're inviting local builders, tradespeople, contractors, and suppliers to join us in shaping a realistic, collaborative plan for getting the doors open. ‌ 'We're not asking for commitments — we're starting with a conversation. We want your ideas, your knowledge, and your support in helping us take practical next steps. 'Wishaw YMCA has always believed in serving the community, and this building is part of that promise. It was gifted to us by the town — and we feel a deep responsibility to bring it back into use. 'But we also know this won't succeed unless the community is part of the journey.' ‌ The YM will be hosting a builder and trades planning session at the group's current base in Quarry Street on Saturday, June 8. The YMCA added: 'We believe this building has a future — but only if it's shaped by those who will use it, support it, and take pride in it. 'We envision a space where youth programs can thrive; people can gather, learn, and grow; where local organisations can deliver services and the town can once again take ownership of this shared space. ‌ 'Your input can help us make smart decisions that move us forward. Whether you have time, experience, materials, or ideas to share — your voice matters. 'Let's figure out what's possible, and build something for Wishaw.' The YM has a range of activities taking place at its current base including its well-established esports academy, camera club and WYTV which gives youngsters the chance to become content creators. ‌ However, Wishaw YM chair Mary Jean Ferguson is keen to continue the momentum the group has built up over the past few years. She said: 'Any help or advice we can get from local builders will really help us moving forward. 'It's not just about the YMCA it's about the whole town. The YM building was gifted to us by the community and I think we have a duty to get it back open and give it back to the community.' ‌ You can join the builder and trades planning session at the YMCA base in Quarry Street, on June 8 starting at 3pm. If you would like more information then email info@ or find out more at the Wishaw YMCA Facebook page.
