He said once the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) issues the Certificate of Fitness (CoF) and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) grants the Occupational Permit, students and teachers will be moved to the new location. 'We already have students who are supposedly to be enrolled into YSISS Sibu this January, but the school can only be ready by June or next month. They are now temporarily housed at the second YSISS at Mile 12 Kuching-Serian Road. 'We are waiting for the OP (from SMC) and clearance (CoF) from the Bomba. Once they are ready, we will relocate them to Sibu. 'I hope it will happen in the next couple of weeks. But I am trying very hard so that they can move to Sibu as soon as possible. The only issue now is to get Bomba clearance (and the OP),' he told reporters this after the 'Ibadah Qurban Nangka' at SK Abang Ali here today. Currently, Yayasan Sarawak's two international schools at Petra Jaya and Mile 12 Kuching-Serian Road are operational, with Sibu next in line. The Nangka assemblyman emphasised that YSISS would adopt the Cambridge syllabus, with students sitting for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). On the event, Dr Annuar highlighted that the sacrificial meat was given to 116 orphaned students attending schools within the constituency. 'Today's programme is meant for Hari Raya Aidiladha, where we are giving the sacrificial meat to 116 orphaned students who are not staying in the complex (The Juma'ani Tuanku Haji Bujang Welfare Complex). 'As you know, we have orphans residing both within the complex and outside of it. Today ('s event) is dedicated exclusively to those students who are not living there, as well as to the asnaf group in DUN Nangka,' he said. Dr Annuar revealed that three cows were sacrificed, partially contributed by Nangka Service Centre. For the record, there are nine primary schools and three secondary schools in Nangka. Political secretary to Premier, Syed Azmee Wan Junaidi was also in attendance. dr annuar rapaee lead Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School Sibu

YSISS students surpass international average in Cambridge exams
State Deputy Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee speaking to reporters at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly media room on Tuesday (May 20). KUCHING: Students at Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS) scored above the international average in the Year Nine Cambridge checkpoint exams, says Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee. The state Deputy Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister said 99 students from YSISS Petra Jaya took the exam last year in English, Mathematics, and Science. YSISS students achieved an average score of 32 in English and 39 in both Mathematics and Science, exceeding the international averages of 25 for English and 31 for Mathematics and Science. "The results are very good. Through this exam, we can gauge our standards compared to international students," he said at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Tuesday (May 20). The Cambridge checkpoint grading scale ranges from 0 to 50, with performance bands from basic (1-10) to outstanding (41-50). Year Nine is equivalent to Form Three. Dr Annuar then added to his earlier response to Iskandar Turkee (GPS-Jepak), who had asked about YSISS students' achievements in the Cambridge exam. In addition to overall scores, students were graded on various topics in each subject, including biology, chemistry, and physics in Science, and algebra and geometry in Mathematics. "Our students also scored above the international average for each topic. Again, this is very good," he said. In response to Iskandar earlier, Dr Annuar said the state government plans to build a new YSISS in Bintulu, in the Jepak new township area. The school will use the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) syllabus to ensure education quality. "The effectiveness of teaching and learning will be assessed periodically through a monitoring and feedback mechanism based on Cambridge University's standards," he added. Currently, there are three Yayasan Sarawak international secondary schools in the state, located in Petra Jaya, 12th Mile Kuching-Serian Road, and Sibu.

Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development acting permanent secretary Husini Bakir said the international schools are part of the state government's ongoing efforts to enhance education quality and widen access to international-standard education, especially in strengthening students' proficiency in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). 'To date, two YSISS schools are already in operation in Petra Jaya and Kuching. Another will commence operations in Sibu this year, with two more set to open in Bintulu and Miri in 2027,' he said when representing Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn at National Science Week (MSN) 2025 here last night. Husini said the initiative aligns with the state's broader agenda to drive the development of science and technology in Sarawak, including the construction of the Sarawak Science Centre, scheduled to open early next year; the recent establishment of the Sarawak AI Center; and the ongoing development of the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre near Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas). The MSN 2025 programme, organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti), featured a range of activities focused on science, innovation, and technology, aimed at sparking interest among students and the public. Husini emphasised the importance of continued strategic collaboration between government agencies and private partners in supporting similar initiatives in future. 'Such partnerships act as a catalyst for stronger synergy in advancing science, technology, and innovation (STI) in both Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole,' he said.
