YTL Communications supports government's nationwide connectivity mission
KUALA LUMPUR: YTL Communications Sdn Bhd, Malaysia's first mobile operator to launch 5G commercially, remains steadfast in supporting the government's and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's (MCMC) mission to deliver high-quality, reliable internet access to all Malaysians, whether urban or rural. The company recently hosted Minister of Communications Datuk Fahmi Fadzil for an official visit to its fully operational six-way multi-operator core network (MOCN) 4G radio tower in Tanjung Asam, Penang. This project, delivered under the government's "Where There's a Road, There's Internet" initiative, aligns with the minister's vision of active network sharing among mobile operators to make nationwide coverage expansion more cost-effective. The site showcases Malaysia's telco industry's technological progress through an advanced radio network architecture that allows one operator to deliver radio services and share spectrum for five major mobile network operators (Yes, CelcomDigi, Maxis, TM, U Mobile). The expanded coverage now serves the Tanjung Asam coastal corridor and nearby communities, benefiting over 500 residents and 350 daily commuters along the coastal road, including fishing villages and underserved areas. For this project, YTL Communications partnered with Konsortium Jaringan Selangor (KJS) as the infrastructure provider. The "Where There's a Road, There's Internet" initiative is supported by the Network Infrastructure Sharing Framework (NISF), which was launched by Datuk Fahmi on 27 January 2025 to unite Malaysia's mobile operators in improving national mobile internet coverage. YTL Communications said it fully supports the NISF and will continue to work closely with the Ministry, MCMC, and industry partners to expand quality mobile services for everyone. "Today's event is not just about a tower; it's about a whole-of-industry collaboration in delivering real, measurable impact to the Rakyat," said Wing K. Lee, chief executive officer of YTL Communications. "By using Yes network equipment and spectrum to host all of Malaysia's major mobile telcos, we have proven this advanced network infrastructure sharing approach can indeed be used nationwide to improve coverage for the benefit of the Rakyat." As the anchor operator for this deployment, Yes continues to lead efforts to close Malaysia's digital divide, having already completed 70% of MCMC's JENDELA Phase 2 rollout to date.

Putrajaya to act against profiteering as new electricity tariff kicks in, says Fahmi
GEORGE TOWN, July 1 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the government will act on all complaints of profiteering and price manipulation following the implementation of new electricity tariffs today. He said the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has launched Ops Kesan 4.0 from today to ensure there is no profiteering. 'I am always in communication with KPDN Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali to provide the latest updates if netizens or the public raise any issues on price manipulation,' he said after officiating the launch of YTL Communications' Tanjung Asam six-way multi-operator core network (MOCN) base station here. Fahmi said he believed prices would not be affected by the new electricity tariffs. Earlier, he reiterated that a total of 23.6 million consumers could see lower electricity bills with the new tariffs coming into effect today. He said the new base tariff is 19 per cent lower than previously expected. 'Those who use less than 1,000 kWh a month will not only see the same bill amount, but there's a possibility that it will be lower,' he said. He added that the most significant change is that, starting today, 2pm to 10pm is considered peak hours. 'We can save by using high-energy consumption electronics and electrical appliances outside of peak hours,' he said. He explained that peak hours coincide with the period when most factories are in full operation, so the government is encouraging consumers to use most of their electrical and electronic appliances during off-peak times.

Fahmi: Where there's a road, there'll be internet — Malaysia set to expand highway coverage
GEORGE TOWN, July 1 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will work with the Malaysian Highway Authority to expand telecommunications coverage along highways. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said about 50km of highways have been identified as lacking telco coverage and connectivity. 'So we will make full use of the initiative 'where there's a road, there's internet' to resolve connectivity issues in areas such as highways,' he told reporters after officiating the launch of YTL Communications' Tanjung Asam six-way multi-operator core network (MOCN) base station in Gertak Sanggul here. He said the 'where there's a road, there's internet' initiative was introduced to improve connectivity in secluded areas. 'Before this, focus was only on internet in populated areas but there was no connectivity on roads where there is no housing, and these are main roads or trunk roads,' he said. He said some places will now benefit from internet coverage, such as Tanjung Asam, which is frequented by visitors despite having no nearby housing. 'A few years ago, there was a drowning case, and they couldn't call for help as there was no line here, so with this tower, we have resolved the issue of a black spot in this area,' he said. He added that several black spots in Penang and on the mainland can be addressed through the joint efforts of MCMC and all six telco companies working together to build towers. The MOCN base station supports the Network Infrastructure Sharing Framework, which brings all network operators together to use a single tower to provide seamless coverage for consumers. Fahmi said there are now five MOCN stations — including the one in Tanjung Asam — with two located in Bukit Putus in Negeri Sembilan, one in Prima Gambang in Pahang, and one in Banting. He noted that setting up MOCN base stations takes time, as site suitability studies must be conducted, and engineering expertise is needed to build towers in challenging locations. 'We are also looking into providing internet connectivity in coastal areas by utilising low orbit satellites,' he said. He said they hope to complete the proof of concept by the third or fourth quarter of this year to implement satellite-based connectivity off the coast. 'We are discussing with a few companies in this initiative,' he said.
