Talent, temperament, tech will change future: Modi

The trinity of 'talent, temperament and technology' will transform the future of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday as he emphasized on simplifying regulations and fast-tracking approvals to allow the benefits of innovation and research to reach the people. Modi also hailed India's youth as 'R&D'—ready and disruptive—and narrated how India is setting new milestones in various sectors. Speaking at the YUGM (Confluence in Sanskrit) Innovation Conclave organized by the Wadhwani Foundation and the Union education ministry in New Delhi, the PM remarked that 'We have limited time, the goals are big'. After a pause, Modi clarified that he was not referring to the 'current situation', referring to anticipation over India's response to the terror attack at Pahalgam , but about the larger task of turning India into a developed nation by 2047. The PM said the country is at the forefront to adapting to AI (artificial intelligence). He added that India must accelerate the transition from idea to product in order to meet the goal of becoming 'Viksit Bharat' within the next 25 years. Speaking at length on the latest innovations, the PM also compared the progress made during the UPA era and the current regime. 'To give continuous momentum to the goals that India has set, it is necessary to strengthen the country's research ecosystem. In the last decade, rapid work has been done in this direction, necessary resources have been increased. In 2013-14, the gross expenditure on R&D was only ₹60 thousand crores. We have more than doubled it to more than ₹1.25 lakh crores. Many state-of-the-art research parks have also been established in the country. Research and Development Cells have been established in about 6000 higher education institutions. Due to our efforts, innovation culture is developing rapidly in the country' Modi said that in 2014, around 40 thousand patents were filed in India every year, which has now increased to more than 80 thousand. 'This also shows how much support the youth of the country is getting from our intellectual property ecosystem,' he added, listing the ₹50,000 crore (over five years) National Research Foundation , the One Nation One Subscription scheme for subscription to journals, and the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship. Modi highlighted the commissioning of the world's longest hyperloop test track, the 422-metre hyperloop developed by IIT Madras and the Indian Railways, the development of 'brain on a chip' technology by IISC and making of the first indigenous MRI machine. 'There are many such path-breaking R&D that are taking place in our universities. This is the youth power of a developing India – Ready, Disruptive, and Transformative!' Modi said. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also spoke at the conclave. He said the government will open 50,000 new Atal Tinkering Labs in schools across the country over the next five years. He said 10,000 such labs have already been established. He said initiatives such as internship cells and the PM Vidyalakshmi scheme are being implemented to support skill development and improve access to education. Pradhan said the word 'YUGM' reflects integration, vision, and innovation. He said the government's education and research reforms are forming the base of a self-reliant India.

He said steps such as the National Curriculum Framework, learning-teaching materials and new textbooks for classes 1 to 7 have already been prepared. He was addressing the Uniting Academia, Industry and Innovators for Viksit Bharat (YUGM) conclave organised jointly by the Union Education Ministry and Wadhwani Foundation in New Delhi. Indian youth ready and disruptive today, setting research milestones: PM Modi

The youth in India is ready and disruptive today, setting research milestones in different sectors, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the YUGM Conclave here on Tuesday. YUGM ("confluence" in Sanskrit) is a first-of-its-kind strategic conclave convening leaders from government, academia, industry, and the innovation ecosystem. The Prime Minister said the YUGM is a confluence of stakeholders joined together to work towards Viksit Bharat, and "will strengthen efforts to boost the country's innovation capacity and deep tech advancements". 'Our endeavour is to empower the youth with skills that make them self-reliant and position India as a global innovation hub,' the PM said. Asserting India's strong position for research and development, he added that 'our youth is ready and disruptive today, and it is achieving milestones in different sectors'. PM Modi said this, citing innovations such as the 410-metre-long first Hyperloop test track by IIT Madras researchers, and 'brain on a chip' technology capable of storing and processing data in 16,500 states within a molecular film by scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISC). He noted that "India's future depends on the youth" and to make them future leaders, the 'education system shares a great responsibility'. "We are modernising the country's education system according to the needs of the 21st century," PM Modi said. The PM informed about the DIKSHA (Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing) platform under which the One Nation, One Digital infrastructure has been established. 'The infrastructure is AI-based, scalable and is being used to develop textbooks in over 30 Indian languages and seven foreign languages,' the PM said. The PM also lauded the research ecosystem in the country, which more than doubled in its gross expenditure -- over Rs 1.15 crore currently from just Rs 60 crore in 2013-14. To boost research in the country, the PM informed the launch of various programmes such as state-of-the-art research parks; the establishment of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), One Nation, One Subscription; and PM Research Fellowship, among others. 'The country's innovation culture is also growing -- from 40,000 patents in 2014, we now have over 80,000. This shows that the youth are getting support,' he said, while also stressing India's growth and representations in global rankings, such as in the QS rankings. Further, the PM noted the opening of Indian campuses in Abu Dhabi (IIT Delhi) and Tanzania (IIT Madras), as well as the setting up of foreign university campuses in India. 'This will pave the way for academic exchange, research collaboration, and cross-cultural learning exposure to our students". He called on the industry leaders to stand with young researchers, guide and fund them to foster larger innovations. "It is crucial that the journey from idea to prototype to product is completed in the shortest time possible," the PM said. While India is rapidly adopting AI and AI excellence centres are being increasingly established, "our vision is to make AI work for India', the PM said. The event held at the Bharat Mandapam was driven by a collaborative project of around Rs 1,400 crore with joint investment from the Wadhwani Foundation and government institutions.
