Talent, temperament, tech will change future: Modi
The trinity of 'talent, temperament and technology' will transform the future of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday as he emphasized on simplifying regulations and fast-tracking approvals to allow the benefits of innovation and research to reach the people. Modi also hailed India's youth as 'R&D'—ready and disruptive—and narrated how India is setting new milestones in various sectors.
Speaking at the YUGM (Confluence in Sanskrit) Innovation Conclave organized by the Wadhwani Foundation and the Union education ministry in New Delhi, the PM remarked that 'We have limited time, the goals are big'. After a pause, Modi clarified that he was not referring to the 'current situation', referring to anticipation over India's response to the terror attack at Pahalgam , but about the larger task of turning India into a developed nation by 2047.
The PM said the country is at the forefront to adapting to AI (artificial intelligence). He added that India must accelerate the transition from idea to product in order to meet the goal of becoming 'Viksit Bharat' within the next 25 years.
Speaking at length on the latest innovations, the PM also compared the progress made during the UPA era and the current regime. 'To give continuous momentum to the goals that India has set, it is necessary to strengthen the country's research ecosystem. In the last decade, rapid work has been done in this direction, necessary resources have been increased. In 2013-14, the gross expenditure on R&D was only ₹60 thousand crores. We have more than doubled it to more than ₹1.25 lakh crores. Many state-of-the-art research parks have also been established in the country. Research and Development Cells have been established in about 6000 higher education institutions. Due to our efforts, innovation culture is developing rapidly in the country'
Modi said that in 2014, around 40 thousand patents were filed in India every year, which has now increased to more than 80 thousand. 'This also shows how much support the youth of the country is getting from our intellectual property ecosystem,' he added, listing the ₹50,000 crore (over five years) National Research Foundation , the One Nation One Subscription scheme for subscription to journals, and the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship.
Modi highlighted the commissioning of the world's longest hyperloop test track, the 422-metre hyperloop developed by IIT Madras and the Indian Railways, the development of 'brain on a chip' technology by IISC and making of the first indigenous MRI machine. 'There are many such path-breaking R&D that are taking place in our universities. This is the youth power of a developing India – Ready, Disruptive, and Transformative!' Modi said.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also spoke at the conclave. He said the government will open 50,000 new Atal Tinkering Labs in schools across the country over the next five years. He said 10,000 such labs have already been established. He said initiatives such as internship cells and the PM Vidyalakshmi scheme are being implemented to support skill development and improve access to education.
Pradhan said the word 'YUGM' reflects integration, vision, and innovation. He said the government's education and research reforms are forming the base of a self-reliant India.

Bengaluru: Union minister and JD(S) chief HD Kumaraswamy Saturday alleged that the Karnataka govt had "pre-planned" the RCB IPL victory celebrations and official permissions were granted hours before the final match had even begun. He said this raised serious concerns over political and bureaucratic accountability on the stampede. "The FIR on the stampede incident says permission was sought for the June 4 victory celebrations at the stadium even before the match started on June 3 (at Ahmedabad). The final started at 7.30pm (on June 3), but an application was submitted at 6pm for next day's celebrations ... did they dream about winning the match? "Permission for celebrations was formally accorded only for the Vidhana Soudha venue and not for the cricket stadium, after getting the report from Vidhana Soudha DCP on June 4." the CMO said.

More water: High court rejects Punjab's plea against May 2 water order, says state free to approach Centre
Chandigarh: Punjab and Haryana high court dismissed the Punjab govt's plea to modify its May 6 order, directing the state to comply with the May 2 decision of the meeting —chaired by the Union home secretary—to release additional water to Haryana from the Bhakra Dams. However, the court said Punjab could refer the matter to the central govt for further consideration. "The state of Punjab is not left remediless, since it can always make a reference to the central govt in terms of Explanation – II to Rule 7 of 1974 Rules as per law...," the HC held. Regarding Punjab's ground of BBMB being incompetent to decide the issue once the matter was referred to the govt of India via a letter dated April 29 by Haryana, the HC held that the letter dated April 29 does not relate to any dissent by Haryana but contains a request to the chairman of BBMB to refer the matter to the central govt for execution of the minutes of the meeting dated April 28 of the technical committee of the board. "As such, this letter cannot be treated as a reference to the central govt. Consequently, Haryana's letter dated April 29 does not fall within the realm of 'material fact', non-disclosure of which is hence inconsequential," the HC held in its detailed order released on Saturday. The state claimed that the direction in question was passed on account of concealment of material facts by BBMB in the petition. According to Punjab's plea, in case of any policy decision or where the rights of any state are affected, the matter is to be referred to the central govt through the chairman of the board. However, despite the matter being referred to the central govt for deciding the issue under Rule 7 of BBMB Rules 1974, and no decision thereupon being taken, the board again convened a meeting on April 30, wherein, without any adjudication by the competent authority, it decided the issue of releasing 8,500 cusecs of water to Haryana.

No tolerance for terror, allies must understand, says India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and external affairs minister S Jaishankar reiterated India's 'zero tolerance' policy for terrorism and the need for decisive international action against terror and those who support it during meetings with British foreign secretary David Lammy on Saturday. Modi said India valued Britain's backing for the fight against cross-border terrorism while Jaishankar said India's partners should understand the 'zero tolerance' policy for terrorism as the country will never accept the perpetrators of terrorism being treated at par with victims. The remarks by the top Indian leadership, made against the backdrop of several countries hyphenating India and Pakistan during last month's military clashes, reiterated to the world community New Delhi's new approach to fighting cross-border terrorism backed by Islamabad. Britain's foreign office had said before Lammy's meeting with Indian interlocutors that he would address how the current peace between India and Pakistan can be supported for regional stability. 'We have also launched the Strategic Exports and Technology Cooperation Dialogue, the first meeting of which was held…this week. This will enhance, among others, the TSI's effectiveness in promoting trade in critical and emerging technologies, including the resolution of relevant licencing or regulatory issues,' Jaishankar said. The India-UK infrastructure financial bridge can unlock quality long-term capital flows from Britain to India and contribute to infrastructure development, and there is also good collaboration in the education sector with many UK universities planning to establish campuses in India, he said. Lammy described the finalisation of the FTA as Britain winning a 'trophy' and the beginning of a new era in bilateral ties since it is expected to increase will trade by £25.5 billion. Lammy's visit would also prepare the grounds for a visit by Starmer to India for the formal signing of the FTA. Both countries are currently involved in the legal scrubbing of the FTA, a process expected to be completed in three months. During 2023-24, India was the UK's second largest source of investments in terms of number of projects for the fifth consecutive year. India was the UK's 11th largest trading partner in 2024, accounting for 2.4% of total British trade, and two-way trade in goods and services was worth nearly $57 billion in 2024. The FTA is expected to increase bilateral trade by $34 billion a year from 2040. Within a decade of the deal being implemented, 85% of British products will become tariff-free in India. Indian tariffs on alcohol will be cut from 150% to 75%, falling to 40% by the 10th year of the deal. India will also cut automotive tariffs from more than 100% to 10%. The UK too has agreed to cut its tariffs and 99% of India's exports to Britain will face no duties.
