Sheffield United beaten against as Ronald earns Swansea victory
Ronaldo struck in the 66th minute to give the home side a deserved victory against opponents who lacked any threat. Swansea were energised by second-half substitutes Melker Widell and Zeidane Inoussa and Ronald linked up with the former to score the only goal of the game. New Blades boss Ruben Selles has now started his reign with a hat-trick of losses and his docile team clearly needs strengthening. Both clubs were striving to recover from opening-day defeats a week ago. Swansea had lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough, while United's 4-1 home defeat to Bristol City was quickly followed by a Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Birmingham. The Blades looked vulnerable in the opening period, which was dominated by Swansea, with debutant Malick Yalcouye, a loan signing from Brighton earlier in the week, at the heart of their efforts in midfield. After the home side saw a first-minute effort from Josh Tymon whistle past a post, the best opportunity of the half fell to Yalcouye. The Ivory Coast Under-23 international collided with Djibril Soumare but recovered quickly to race towards goal. But Yalcouye delayed his shot, which was blocked, before Ronald's follow-up was saved by Michael Cooper. The Swans also had chances from headers from Liam Cullen and Cameron Burgess but were unable to take them. Selles cut a frustrated figure on the touchline but the Spaniard would have been more satisfied with the way his team finished the first half. They applied some concerted pressure, with Louie Barry twice able to get behind Swansea's defence, although his cutbacks lacked accuracy. A shot from Harrison Burrows was deflected for a United corner as the visitors ended the first half on top. It was Swansea, however, who seized back the initiative after the break and looked the more likely team to go ahead. A shot from Cullen was blocked in the Blades' goalmouth and, after the ball pin-balled around the penalty area, Burgess drove in an effort that appeared to strike an arm. Swansea's appeals for a penalty were turned down, however, but in the 66th minute they did break the deadlock. Ronald started a rapid counter-attack from halfway and then found substitute Widell. The Swede tried to thread the ball into the box, but instead it fell invitingly back to Ronald, who clipped a right-footed shot past a diving Cooper from 20 yards. Moments later Widell had a chance to make it 2-0 but poked his effort just wide of the far post. United sent on Tom Cannon and Andre Brooks to try and salvage something late on, but Swansea held firm.

Swansea City 1-0 Sheffield United: Ronald strike hands hosts first win of new season
Swansea City are up and running in the Championship after battling their way to a fine win over Sheffield United at a sweltering Stadium. Brazilian winger Ronald followed up his goal in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday with another strike here, popping up midway through the second half to fire home to hand City their first Championship win of the season. Swansea had lost each of their last five league games against the Blades, but were defensively pretty comfortable against Sheffield United side perhaps still reeling from their 4-1 defeat to Bristol City on the opening day. It's a victory that will delight Swans boss Alan Sheehan, particularly after their disappointing opening gambit up at Middlesbrough last weekend. The Irishman made just one change from the toothless display at the Riverside, with exciting teenager Malick Yalcouye handed his Swans debut from the off The Ivorian enjoyed a somewhat mixed first Championship outing, but he certainly had his moments against a Sheffield United side that did little to justify their tag as promotion contenders, turning in a largely off-colour showing in the Welsh sunshine. Yalcouye was playing Champions League football last term, so managing expectation might well be the key challenge for Sheehan and co. Then again, the midfielder did start the move that ultimately concluded with Josh Tymon firing wide from Ronald's deflected cross after just a minute. It wasn't a flash in the pan for Swansea, either. Indeed, they were the better side during a lively opening 15 minutes. Yalcouye saw a shot blocked after breaking free down the left, before Ronald's effort on the rebound was similarly charged down. Aside from dealing with a couple of crosses, Lawrence Vigouroux had very little to do for much of the afternoon, although Sheffield United did have their moments. Harrison Burrows saw a deflected effort from 25 yards deflected wide, before sending a daisy-cutter off the back-tracking Franco from the resulting corner. Swansea, though, started the second half much the same was as the first. Josh Key, Eom Jisung and Cameron Burgess all saw shots blocked in quick succession following a panic-inducing freekick into the United box just four minutes after the restart. But City weren't to be denied, and finally took the lead just after the hour. Substitute Zeidane Inoussa was the architect, producing a fine run into the box before squaring for Liam Cullen, whose initial shot was blocked, only for the onrushing Ronald to steer home the rebound. Melker Widell then dragged a shot wide as Swansea looked to kill the game off, but a single goal proved enough to hand the Swans a thoroughly-deserved three points. Swansea City: Vigouroux; Key, Cabango (c), Burgess, Tymon; Franco, Yalcouye (Widell 62); Ronald (Fulton 90), Galbraith, Eom (Inoussa 62); Cullen (Wales 90+7) Subs: Fisher, Vipotnik, Casey, Cooper, Sheffield United: Cooper; Seriki, Bindon, Robinson, Burrows; Soumare, Peck, Hamer; O'Hare, Campbell (Cannon 62), Barry Subs: Davies, McCallum, Brooks, Ukaki, One, Curtis, Norrington-Davies, Hampson

READ MORE: Cardiff City star in talks to leave club as Barry-Murphy 'confident' on signings READ MORE: Swansea City boss Alan Sheehan delivers Malick Yalcouye transfer update as loan deal draws near It seems he could well be through the door in time to face Sheffield United this weekend as suggested by boss Alan Sheehan after the win over the Red Devils. "He's been involved with Brighton in pre-season, and we'll have to see in training where he's at," Sheehan said. "We might have to integrate him into it. "But I imagine he could come into the squad on Saturday." Kone joins QPR Former Swansea City transfer target Richard Kone has completed a move to Queens Park Rangers for an undisclosed fee. Sources close to negotiations claimed the 22-year-old was the subject of two failed bids from the Swans earlier in the summer, while Preston North End and Toulouse were also believed to have had bids knocked back. Swansea were initially expected to return with a third bid, but substantially cooled their interest in search of other targets. Leicester City were another side to admire the Ivorian, but failed to firm up their interest with a bid, opening the door for a move to Loftus Road. "It's an amazing feeling, I'm really glad to join an amazing team, a great club. I can't wait to get started," Kone told the club's website. "I made my mind when the opportunity comes, I'll be ready. I'll be ready to take it. By God's grace, it took the time that it took, four years, and when the time was right, I did take my chances and here I am." 'No offer' for Sylla amid bizarre scandal Swansea City are reportedly yet to make a concrete offer for alleged target Moussa Sylla. Reports in France claim Swansea, Sevilla, Valencia, and Angers have all expressed an interest in the Schalke forward, but German publication Bild says there's currently nothing on the table. The same publication is also tracking a bizarre scandal involving the 25-year-old and his dog. It's claimed Sylla left his Staffordshire Bull Terrier, 'Ghost', with a dog-sitter at the Albert Schweitzer Animal Shelter in Essen earlier this month, and has since refused to take the dog back, allegedly stating he "unfortunately no longer had any use" for it. Sign up to the Swansea City WhatsApp service to get breaking news and top stories sent to your phone. Sylla has vehemently denied those allegations, and hit back with a statement through French lawyer Dylan Bourkab. "For several days, Mr. Moussa Sylla and his family have been the target of a media campaign based on false, distorted and out-of-context information," the statement read. It all comes amid growing uncertainty around the player's future in Germany, French publication L'Equipe stating Sevilla, Valencia and Angers are among the other clubs linked with a move.

The Ivorian is in attendance to watch his new side take on League Two side Crawley Town on Tuesday night, with the club hoping to have his international clearance through before Saturday's clash at home to Sheffield United. He signed a five-year deal with the Seagulls last summer, and there's a growing feeling on the English south coast that he has the skillset to one day shine in the Premier League following a meteoric rise. Eligible to represent Ivory Coast and Mali, he signed for Albion after making just 14 outings for previous club IFK Goteburg having previously come through the ranks of Ivorian side ASEC Mimosas, where the likes of Emmanuel Eboue, Gervinho and the Toure brothers all began their careers. His time in Sweden even saw him compared to Ngolo Kante by some onlookers. He's poised to become Swansea's eighth signing of the summer, with Bobby Wales, Zeidane Inoussa, Ricardo Santos, Cameron Burgess, Ethan Galbraith and Paul Farman all joining on permanent deals. The 19-year-old, who can play either out wide or as a number eight, is seen as one of the most exciting youngsters on Brighton's books right now, and there had been suggestions he might be on the cusp of a run in the first team next season. But despite some impressive performances for Albion in pre-season, another loan spell has been viewed as the best next step in his development. Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here. Toulouse and FC Copenhagen have shown an interest in recent weeks, but Swansea now appear to be firmly in the mix. However, contrary to reports elsewhere, club sources have stressed that a deal isn't yet agreed, with the youngster understood to be one of several midfield options being looked at. It's understood Liverpool's James McConnell is another to have been the subject of initial enquiries this summer. Article continues below Yalcouye spent last season on loan at Austrian champions Sturm Graz, and even played eight times in their Champions League campaign, including a man-of-the-match performance against Borussia Dortmund. In total, he made 36 appearances in all competitions, netting four goals and earning two assists as Graz won the Austrian Bundesliga title. Having signed a five-year deal with the Seagulls last summer, there's a growing feeling the teenager, who holds dual nationality with Mali and the Ivory Coast, has the skillset to shine in the Premier League following a meteoric rise. He made just 14 outings for previous club IFK Goteburg before catching the eye of Albion, having previously played for Ivorian side ASEC Mimosas, where the likes of Emmanuel Eboue, Gervinho and the Toure brothers all started their careers. His time in Sweden even saw him compared to Ngolo Kante by some onlookers. Should Swansea secure a deal, Yalcouye would become their seventh signing of the summer, with Bobby Wales, Zeidane Inoussa, Ricardo Santos, Cameron Burgess and Ethan Galbraith all joining on permanent deals. West Ham United youngster Kaelan Casey has been the latest to arrive, the centre-back sealing a loan move to SA1 earlier in the week. Meanwhile, the club remain keen on adding more firepower to their ranks before the close of the window, but a move for Richard Kone remains unlikely, despite Wycombe Wanderers changing their demands for the striker. The League One side have dropped the amount they want up front for the 22-year-old to around £3m, in a move that could push open the door for an exit. Article continues below Swansea are aware of Wycombe's change in stance, but sources have indicated that it hasn't altered City's position, and a move to SA1 remains unlikely, with the club assessing a number of other options. Jusef Erabi is one of the alternatives to have been considered, with reports in Sweden suggesting the club have already launched two bids for the Hammarby star.
