Ministry of Industry and Trade: No Concerns Over Barley Shortage, Stock is Safe - Jordan News
Ministry of Industry and Trade: No Concerns Over Barley Shortage, Stock is Safe The spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply, Yanal Al-Barmawi, confirmed that the Kingdom's barley stock is sufficient, as the ministry holds quantities that exceed the safe period and cover needs for up to 8 months. These stocks are continuously replenished through regular tenders to purchase additional quantities according to clear mechanisms. اضافة اعلان In a statement to the Jordan News Agency (Petra) on Wednesday, Al-Barmawi stated that there is no shortage of barley at all. He explained that the observations made by some livestock breeders, especially those with sheep holdings, were due to the increased demand for barley this period, attributed to low rainfall and the weak grazing season. He added that it is usual for every farmer to receive their allocated subsidized feed (barley and bran) in installments throughout the month from the designated feed centers. However, the current demand is for the entire allocation to be provided at once. Al-Barmawi emphasized the ministry's commitment to ensuring that every farmer with sheep holdings receives their subsidized feed allocation and that the distribution mechanism ensures the availability of both barley and bran for all farmers. He explained that providing the entire allocation at once prevents the supply from being available to others at the same time. To expedite and improve the process, Al-Barmawi mentioned that efforts are underway to automate the distribution procedures for subsidized feed, allowing farmers to request the quantities they need within their allocation and receive them from the designated feed center. This new system will provide the ministry with daily data on the required barley quantities and the corresponding bran, which will be secured through the feed centers as per the farmer's request. He pointed out that once the new system is completed, farmers will be able to collect their subsidized feed from any of the 51 feed centers, unlike the current system, which restricts them to a single center. Al-Barmawi noted that the monthly quantities distributed to sheep breeders range between 80,000 and 85,000 tons of barley and between 18,000 and 20,000 tons of bran. These quantities fluctuate depending on wheat milling operations. For example, during Ramadan, the quantities decrease due to reduced bread consumption and lower wheat milling. (Petra)
