Naval chiefs of S. Korea, US, Japan discuss trilateral cooperation against NK threats

The naval chiefs of South Korea, the United States and Japan held a teleconference Thursday to discuss ways to strengthen their trilateral cooperation against North Korean threats, the South's Navy said. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Yang Yong-mo underscored the need for further bolstering their cooperation during the talks with his US and Japanese counterparts, Adm. James Kilby and Adm. Akira Saito, according to the Navy. "Through continued cooperation among South Korea, the US and Japan, North Korea's provocation should be effectively deterred and dealt with and maritime security capabilities should be strengthened," Yang was quoted as saying. The three nations are seeking to strengthen their joint capabilities against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats, and have conducted trilateral drills, such as the multi-domain Freedom Edge exercise, as part of such efforts. In March, the nations held joint naval drills involving the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier, which marked the first such exercise conducted this year and since US President Donald Trump returned to office in January. Navy chiefs of S. Korea, Ecuador discuss strengthening cooperation

The top naval commanders of South Korea and Ecuador held talks Tuesday to discuss ways to expand military and arms industry cooperation, the Navy said. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Yang Yong-mo met his Ecuadorian counterpart, Miguel Santiago Cordova Chehab, at the Navy's headquarters in Gyeryong, about 140 kilometers south of Seoul, for the talks on bilateral cooperation. The two sides discussed increasing personnel exchanges and warship port visits, and signed a memorandum of understanding for their navies to hold regular talks. Cordova will attend a ceremony Wednesday for the transfer of a 3,000-ton Coast Guard patrol vessel to the Ecuadorian Navy at a shipyard in Mokpo, some 310 kilometers south of Seoul. The government announced last year it would donate the ship, which has been renamed the Jambeli. (Yonhap)

Navy holds remembrance ceremony for fallen sailors of 2010 warship sinking by N. Korea

The Navy held a ceremony Wednesday to honor sailors killed during the 2010 sinking of the Cheonan corvette by a North Korean attack in the Yellow Sea. The 1,200-ton warship sank near the western Northern Limit Line, a de facto inter-Korean maritime border, in March 2010, after a North Korean midget submarine fired a torpedo. The attack killed 46 sailors, while 55 others were rescued. About 200 guests, including bereaved family members and surviving sailors, took part in the ceremony marking the 15th anniversary of the incident, held at the 2nd Fleet in Pyeongtaek, 60 kilometers south of Seoul. "The Republic of Korea's Navy and Marine Corps have not forgotten the 46 warriors of the Cheonan for one moment and will never forget them going forward," Adm. Yang Yong-mo, the Navy chief, said in a message. The Navy vowed to firmly carry out its missions and overwhelmingly respond in the event of North Korea's provocation. (Yonhap)
