Prof Yarlagadda meets Governor Nazeer; flags student concerns, push for Indian languages abroad
VIJAYAWADA: Renowned academician and scholar Professor Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad met Governor Justice S Abdul Nazeer at Raj Bhavan on Saturday, raising concerns over challenges faced by Indian students abroad and the global promotion of Indian languages. Yarlagadda highlighted the implications of the proposed US immigration policy changes by President Donald Trump, which he said could create new barriers for Indian students in the United States. He stressed the need for timely diplomatic and academic interventions to protect their interests. He briefed the Governor on his recent visit to the US, including a meeting with Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. The discussions focused on India's global linguistic presence and student welfare. Yarlagadda called attention to the historic election of Dr Mukkamala Srinivas (Bobby) as the first Telugu individual to become President of the American Medical Association, describing it as a proud moment for the global Telugu community. He also recounted his meeting with Anand Kuchibhotla, President of the University of Silicon Andhra, which is promoting Telugu language and culture in the US. As part of his longstanding advocacy, Prof. Yarlagadda reiterated the demand to recognise Hindi as an official language of the United Nations. Governor Abdul Nazeer appreciated his lifelong service to Hindi and Telugu literature and assured support for initiatives concerning language, education, and the Indian Diaspora.

Learning languages has its own advantage, says YLP
Visakhapatnam: National president of Vishwa Hindi Parishad Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad emphasised that no language will be imposed on any state and the three-language formula as outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 will be an advantage for wider acceptance. At a media conference held here on Tuesday, he appreciated Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan for encouraging people to learn Hindi as the third language. 'Even as the rest of the languages in the constitution are given equal importance, learning Hindi has its own advantage,' Mr. Lakshmi Prasad stressed. Recalling how actors like MGR, Jayalalitha and Rajinikanth had picked up the local language honing their Tamil-speaking skills even as they were not native of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Lakshmi Prasad said that TDP founder and former Chief Minister NT Rama Rao learnt Hindi at 60 years of age. 'Apparently, learning a new language is beneficial to the people and the language per se will not derive any benefit out of it,' he reiterated. The National president of Vishwa Hindi Parishad stated that there is no need to create a language row as several states express concern over making Hindi mandatory in non-Hindi speaking regions. He suggested people go through the NEP-2020 document thoroughly before coming to any conclusion.

NEP 2020 offers greater flexibility in implementation of 3-language formula, say YLP
The National Education Policy 2020 envisages continuation of the three-language formula, keeping in mind the Constitutional provisions, aspirations of the people, regions and Union. There will be greater flexibility in the three-language formula and no language will be imposed on any State, national president of Viswa Hindi Parishad Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad said. Expressing dismay at the ongoing debate across the country on the possible imposition of Hindi on non-Hindi speaking States, Mr. Lakshmi Prasad said at a press conference that those expressing such apprehensions have probably not read the 65-page NEP 2020 document of the Ministry of HRD. The document clearly states that the choice of the three languages would rest with the State, region and the student. But, two of the three languages should be native to India. The NEP 2020 document also states that over 200 Indian languages were lost during the last 50 years due to neglect. UNESCO has declared 197 Indian languages as 'endangered'. Various languages, which do not have a script, are in danger of becoming extinct. The NEP has underlined the need to integrate teaching and learning of Indian languages with school and higher education. Mr. Lakshmi Prasad said that Mahatma Gandhi had advocated the use of Hindu during the Freedom Struggle to unite the people of the country. Hindi serves as an important link language when people from south go to the north, and outside India, English was important. But, neither Hindi nor English could be a substitute for one's mother tongue. Learning an additional language would benefit the learner and not the language itself or to the region concerned. The Dakshin Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha has the maximum students from Tamil Nadu, learning Hindi. He recalled that former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao and former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu had made their mark in national politics as they were well-versed with Hindi. TDP founder and former Chief Minister NT Rama Rao had learnt Hindi at the age of 60, when he had to play a role in national politics. Similarly, the top Tamil actors like MGR, Jayalalitha and Rajanikanth were not from Tamil Nadu but had made their mark in Tamil films by learning Tamil. This shows that learning a new language benefits the individual but not the language or the region. Mr. Lakshmi Prasad commended Jana Sena Party (JSP) president Pawan Kalyan for supporting the learning of Hindi as the third language. While all the 22 languages listed in the Constitution are equal, learning Hindi offers wider choices. Ravi Bachala from Dallas, Texas, and Kancherla Ramakrishna, from Michigan, were also present at the media conference.
