The men's javelin is expected to be a highlight, featuring two of India's rising stars, Sachin Yadav and Yashvir Singh. Sri Lanka's Sumeda Ranasinghe and Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage will be eyeing strong performances as well. Notably, the latter won bronze in the recent NC Classic in Bengaluru. Sprint events are expected to draw attention as well, with India's fastest man, Animesh Kujur, competing in both the 100m and 200m races. 'This is the country's first Continental Tour event and we are hoping for a successful competition so that the world knows we can host this kind of event," Athletics Federation of India President Bahadur Singh Sagoo said while speaking to the media. The World Athletics Continental Tour is an annual series of track and field meets, positioned as the second tier of global one-day competitions, just below the Diamond League. The Continental Tour events provide athletes with a structured platform to compete, earn prize money, and gain valuable world ranking points. The tour is divided into Gold, Silver and Bronze tiers, each offering different levels of competition and prize money. The Indian leg of the tour will feature a total prize pool of USD 25,000 (almost Rs 22 lakh). 'It is mandatory to include one throwing and one jumping event. The competition should have a minimum of 12 disciplines, including five women's events. Kirpal Singh's 53.62m throw lands him the discus gold
Discus thrower Kirpal Singh won his second consecutive competition at the Indian Grand Prix 3 at the Guru Nanak Stadium here on Saturday. The former Inter-State and Federation Cup champion followed up on his gold-winning performance at the Indian Open meet last week with a best throw of 53.62m. Kirpal, the last Indian and one of only five to cross the 60m mark in 2022, is returning from a two-year dope ban. Also winning was Yashvir Singh in javelin throw with a best of 77.79m even as his main competitors — Sahil Silwal and Vikrant Malik — did not start. Talented youngster Dipanshu Sharma failed to reach 70m, settling for a fifth place finish with 66.98m. Among the women, quartermiler Anakha B.A. registered her personal best with her first-ever sub-54 timing, winning the 400m in 53.40s. Anakha was also part of the 4x400m relay squad at the recent World University Games, where the team finished fifth. New Delhi [India], July 1 (ANI): Former world champion and Olympic bronze medalist javelin thrower Anderson Peters of Grenada was announced to be ruled out of the Neeraj Chopra Classic competition on Tuesday. Poland's Cyprian Mrzyglod has been roped in as a replacement in the line-up. In a statement, NC Classic took to X and posted, '*Official Update* Anderson Peters has been ruled out of the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 due to an ankle injury sustained during his last competition. Poland's Cyprian Mrzyglod has been named as his replacement in the final lineup.' Notably, India's javelin star Kishore Jena has also been ruled out of the inaugural edition of the competition due to an ankle injury, with Yashvir Singh coming in as his replacement in the final line-up. 'Kishore Jena has been ruled out of the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 due to an ankle injury. As a World Athletics-sanctioned Gold event, the Neeraj Chopra Classic promises to elevate India's status on the global athletics map. It will feature a stellar line-up of elite javelin throwers, making it a significant event for India. With a seating capacity exceeding 12,000, this competition is set to deliver an exhilarating display of athletic talent and skill. While Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Neeraj will headline the meet named in his honour, the Indian athlete will face stiff competition from some of the sport's biggest names. The organisers of the event confirmed a 12-member entry list for the inaugural NC Classic. The roster earlier saw Poland's Martin Konecny replacing Japan's Genki Dean. Thomas Rohler, and Julius Yego - the 2015 world champion and Rio 2016 silver medallist - will participate as planned initially. The line-up also includes Pan American Games champion Curtis Thompson of the USA, Brazil's Luiz Mauricio da Silva, and Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage.
