QuickCheck: Is a video of a cable car connecting Perak and Kedah real?
CABLE cars offer a picturesque way to travel through mountainous regions and are always popular with tourists.
Recently, a video went viral on social media with claims that there was a new cable car service linking Pengkalan Hulu in Perak to Baling in Kedah.
Is this video true?
VERDICT:
FALSE
Baling District Officer Yazlan Sunardie Che Yahaya confirmed to Malay language daily Sinar Harian that the video was fake and generated by artificial intelligence (AI).
He also urged the public not to be confused by the viral video.
"It certainly does not exist, but I must admit, it was quite exciting to see," he told Sinar Harian.
"We can be entertained by AI content, and who knows, one day it could become a reality.
"After all, Baling and Pengkalan Hulu boast picturesque mountains and scenery," he added.
Sinar Harian also reported that the viral video had previously surfaced on platforms such as TikTok and Facebook, leading a couple to travel from Kuala Lumpur under the impression that it was real.
Yazlan Sunardie emphasised that the incident was a reminder of how AI-generated content could be misinterpreted.
"If such a service were ever to exist, I would be the first to try it," he told Sinar Harian with a laugh.
Meanwhile, acting Baling OCPD Deputy Supt Ahmad Salini Md Ali urged the public to verify the authenticity of any viral content, particularly on social media.
"To date, we have not received any reports of losses, fraud, or concerns regarding this AI-generated content.
"Our checks in both Baling and Pengkalan Hulu confirm that no such cable car project exists," he added.
DSP Ahmad Salini also said that if such AI-generated content causes panic, or disrupts public order, action could be taken under existing laws.
A check by Sinar Harian showed that the video is no longer available and appears to have been removed from all social media platforms.
