Cancer survivor donates kidney to his son with rare genetic disorder

Visakhapatnam: In a rare feat, a 60-year-old stomach cancer survivor donated a kidney to his 37-year-old son, who was diagnosed with renal failure. The transplant was performed by an experienced team of nephrologists and urologists at a corporate hospital in Vizag. The father, Yedla Paidiyya, had undergone stomach cancer surgery (gastrectomy) two years ago. Despite his complex medical history, he was determined to save his son, Yedla Lakshmanudu. After a comprehensive medical evaluation, including PET-CT scans and detailed oncological clearance, he was approved for the donation. Lakshmanudu had been receiving dialysis at an external facility for kidney failure of unknown cause. Upon evaluation, he was diagnosed with Alport syndrome, a rare inherited genetic disorder affecting kidney function, hearing, and vision. This variant is typically passed from mother to son, with daughters being carriers. Consequently, potential donors had to be male family members. Consultant nephrologists Dr Uday Dipakrao Gajare and Dr Vaishnavi, along with their team, managed the case from the outset. They assessed the recipient, planned clinical procedures, and oversaw post-transplant recovery with close monitoring and personalised treatment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dolly Parton, 79, Removes Her Makeup and Stuns Everyone The Noodle Box Undo Speaking about the transplant, Dr Uday Dipakrao Gajare stated, "This kidney transplant represents not just a medical success, but a powerful example of love and sacrifice. A father giving his son the gift of life again is truly remarkable." He added that the team was honoured to have been part of their journey and remained optimistic about the son's recovery and long-term health. The surgical procedure was performed by an experienced urology team and transplant surgeons Dr G Ravindra Varma, Dr Amit Saple, and Dr P Sridhar. They explained that the surgery was technically challenging due to the donor's prior abdominal surgery. However, with detailed planning and coordinated teamwork, the operation was completed smoothly and successfully.
