Woodburn: Beautiful mosaic of memorial rocks

Some people have rocks in their head. Others have hearts of stone. And then there is a recent visitor to Ventura, a man of Baby Boomer age and reportedly from New York, who was caught on video proving he suffers from both sedimentary maladies. Imagine a vandal toppling gravestones in a cemetery and you get an idea of what this king of jerks from Queens did at the memorial rock garden that graces a raised cement planter along our beach promenade. Specifically, The Jerk ruthlessly threw into the ocean some of the beautiful rocks decorated to honor lost loved ones. Watching the detestable act, posted widely on social media, made my heart feel like it had been stung by a hundred jellyfish. If you have never visited this special garden of stones, you are missing out. It is one of the loveliest little jewels of a place you can image, affording a view of the ocean and the music of breaking waves and this sunny greeting on a tiny sign: 'Welcome to Haole's Memorial Rock Garden / Please leave memorial rocks for all to enjoy!' Haole was a dog, a Yellow Lab albeit with white fur, who was famous because he surfed. Indeed, Haole once appeared on 'Good Morning America' and also stars in a book, 'Ride the Wave: Love Sofia and Haole the Surf Dog,' which is the true story of how he helped teach a little girl with Down syndrome to 'walk on water.' After Haole died five summers past, the memorial garden was planted with its first rock and today blooms with many hundreds, if not a thousand or more. The mini-markers come in many sizes and shapes, although most are round or oval, and more than a few are heart-shaped. Almost all are pleasingly smooth as if selected with great care. What makes these stones true gems is they are hand-painted with flowers and hearts, sunsets and rainbows, paw prints and palm trees, angel wings and crosses, with R.I.P. wishes and other heartwarming messages along with the names of loved ones — pets, yes, but also human moms and dads and spouses and siblings and friends. Many are true works of art and all are works from the heart. Together, this colorful avalanche creates a mosaic worthy of comparison to a stained glass window in a church, which is fitting because this comely corner of the seaside seems like an outdoor temple. As such, it is common to see people — pedestrians and cyclists and rollerbladers; alone and in couples and small groups — stop and visit, pause and ponder, remember and pray. Some search for the rocks they have previously left here while others leave new stones now. One rock in Haole's memorial garden is especially dear to me because I know its honoree as well as the artist, my 6-year-old granddaughter, who lovingly decorated it. When Maya learned that my good friend Nick's dog recently crossed the rainbow bridge, she found a stream-polished rock, palm-sized and oval; cleaned it and painted on swirls of deep blue and sea-glass green, and added white stars; then, in her neatest kindergarten printing, in black marker wrote: 'Henry.' Coincidentally, Henry's rock was placed at the southernmost tip of Haole's garden, precisely where The Jerk committed his briny desecration. I went to check and was relieved to find 'Henry' still resting in peace in view of the Ventura Pier. I hope the memorial stones that were tossed into the ocean can be, or have been, retrieved at low tide. One Jerk cannot wipe out Haole's four-legged legacy. Fire Safety Conscious' Yellow Labrador Kills Mom's Candle Vibe and It's Such a Mood

There's nothing quite like preparing a delicious snack, lighting a scented candle, and getting cozy after a long day. Whether you're winding-down routine includes reading, a bath, or a cuddle with a dog, there are so many enjoyable and effective ways to reduce stress and increase relaxation. When you have a dog around, though, relaxing isn't always so simple! Between keeping dogs occupied, avoiding bursts of energy, and making sure all their needs are met, there's a lot to consider. Still, no dog owner would guess that their pup has a vendetta against candles, but for Yellow Lab Lulu and her mom Naomi, this is a very real problem. As the duo showed in a priceless April 23 TikTok video, Naomi loves to light candles, and Lulu loves to snuff them out. She has no idea why her pup likes to disrupt the vibes and mood lighting, but at least it's amusing to watch! OMG, how did she learn to do this? Labrador Retrievers can be very smart dogs sometimes, and this is a perfect example of how their brains will manifest. Still, it must have taken lots of practice and bravery, or a happy accident, for a dog to learn how to blow out a candle. Commenter Sammy guessed that "She was a firefighter in a past life," and that certainly could be the case! Someone else's theory was that she was trying to make a wish like people do on their birthdays, while another person joked, "That's what happens when you let them watch too much Paw Patrol."Whether Lulu is trying to be safety-conscious or just having fun with the smoke and scents from the candle, there's no denying how cute and silly she is. No wonder Naomi is so entertained! Even if she can't have a candle burning for long, her dog's silliness and love can be just as relaxing and joy-inducing. There's no doubt that this wholesome Labrador Retriever takes her job very seriously, but how did she learn to do this? "I think she either doesn't like the smell of the candle or does like the smell when it is blown out," Naomi replied to a commenter. "All I know is candles are done for on Lulu's watch." Even if she'd make an excellent firehouse dog, Lulu seems to have found her calling keeping her Mom and home safe from flames. Good girl! Looking for more PetHelpful updates? Yellow Labrador 'Helping' His Parents with Gender Reveal Goes Hilariously Wrong

Whether your dog is a tiny Chihuahua, a gentle giant Newfoundland, or one of the most popular breeds like the Labrador Retriever, there's no question that they're part of the family. Dogs are pack animals, after all, and they'd like nothing more than to be included in the family unit. That could mean playing together every day, bringing your dog on vacation, or including them in special life events like weddings and baby showers. Indy the Yellow Lab was more than happy to help when his mom and dad asked him to reveal the gender of their next baby. In fact, he was so excited when the big moment came around that the aftermath of the gender reveal went hilariously wrong! Oops! This poor little boy was in the wrong spot at the wrong time, and before he knew it, he was being bulldozed by the family dog. Meanwhile, Indy couldn't contain his excitement, and before he knew it, a case of the zoomies took over! "'New one is coming. Don't need this one anymore,'" joked commenter @julzy_bean. I doubt that's what this happy dog was thinking, but it's funny to think about nevertheless. Luckily, I'm not the only one who's laughing!A viewer named Annie admitted, "I have watched this 700 times and I think it gets funnier every time." I can confirm that it does get funnier! These sweet parents wouldn't have shared this clip if the little boy was actually injured, so I feel a bit better about laughing so hard. The adorable chaos stole the spotlight so quickly that the gender reveal itself was slightly dethroned. It's a boy! Fortunately, Mom and Dad got a good look at the balloons before the collision occurred, and they have plenty of time to celebrate their little one before and after he's born. Indy is more than ready for another little boy to join the family, in case you couldn't tell from his excitement and energy. He and the little guy he ran into are going to be the best role models for this baby boy, but if this Labrador Retriever plays his cards right, he'll get a lifetime playmate and BFF out of his baby brother, too.
