World Bank team inspects Yellow Line BRT project
KARACHI: A high level delegation of World Bank visited the Yellow Line BRT project site office and inspected the ongoing construction near Jam Sadiq Bridge, Karachi Upon arrival at the site office, the delegation was received by Sindh Senior Minister and Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon, Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, and Managing Director of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority Kamal Dayo. The World Bank delegation comprised Regional Vice President Usman Deoni, Country Director for Pakistan Bolorma Amangabazar, Regional Practice Directors Fadia Saada and Almood Weitz, Operations Manager Gellius Draugelis, Special Assistant to the Regional Vice President Lubna Hadji, Operations Officer Hina Saleem Lotia, and Senior Executive Assistant Waleed Anwar. A meeting also convened upon the delegation's arrival at the Yellow Line BRT project site office. Sharjeel Inam Memon briefed the delegation comprehensively about the project, highlighting its importance, effect, and current status. He said that the Yellow Line BRT is a visionary and strategic project for Karachi, it will facilitate fast, affordable, and safe travel. The project will extend from Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan to the Korangi Industrial Area and Landhi and will serve millions of commuters on a daily basis. He stated that the Yellow Line will not only enhance citizen mobility but also stimulate economic activity. 'We aim to complete this project in line with international standards, with facilities comparable to those found in major global cities.' Memon emphasised that only electric buses will run on the Yellow Line BRT to ensure it remains fully environmentally friendly. He noted that Pakistan's first electric bus service and the Pink Bus Service for women were introduced under their leadership and are now operating successfully. Electric buses, he added, will significantly reduce environmental pollution and lead to substantial savings in fuel costs. He further said that an electric scooter program is being launched to give a boost to women, and in response to which, more than 8,000 applications were received. A major food chain company is also coming on board with the government to offer training, making sure women are well-equipped to be part of the scheme. Memon further said that this project is not merely a transport initiative; it's the groundwork for a social revolution. He also noted that work is progressing on the Karachi Circular Railway and the Karachi-to-Sukkur High-Speed Rail projects. He stated that to encourage investment, special economic zones have been established where investors are granted a ten-year tax exemption. While the rising value of the dollar has undoubtedly impacted the construction costs of the BRT project, the government remains committed to overcoming this challenge. The World Bank team commended the speed, vision, and quality of the Yellow Line BRT project and reiterated that Karachi, being a major city, needs more transport initiatives. Work on Yellow BRT project: Sharjeel terms progress ‘satisfactory'
KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that the progress on the Yellow Line BRT project is satisfactory, with work advancing swiftly on two key components, the construction of depots and the new structure replacing the former Jam Sadiq Bridge. He emphasised that the government's objective is to complete the project ahead of schedule to provide the citizens of Karachi with access to modern and high-quality public transport services. Talking to media after reviewed the construction work of the Yellow Line BRT at the Jam Sadiq Bridge, he said that the Sindh government's priority is to integrate all BRT lines in the megacity, including the Green Line, Orange Line, Red Line, and Yellow Line, which will significantly ease traffic congestion. He added that electric buses (EV buses) are being introduced under the Yellow Line and other BRTs. In response to a question about the Red Line BRT, he acknowledged that there had indeed been some challenges; however, the pace of construction has now picked up again, and the progress is satisfactory. He said that the Sindh government is set to launch double-decker buses and Pakistan's first electric taxi service (EV Taxi) in Karachi in August. Additionally, Pink EV scooters will be provided free of cost, especially for women, to ensure safe and convenient transportation. He said that all these initiatives are part of the Sindh government's broader vision to reduce environmental pollution in Karachi and to provide a modern and efficient transport infrastructure. Memon said that water has been drained from most areas of Hyderabad following the recent rains, but some issues were encountered due to the power suspensions caused by HESCO. The administration used generators to drain water from the affected areas. To a question, he said that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government should be allowed to function in accordance with its mandate, but Ali Amin Gandapur appears to be acting more like a member of the opposition. Regarding the MQM, he said that they should abandon the politics of hatred and instead focuses on addressing public issues. Regarding the children of the PTI founder, he said that if they wish to come to Pakistan and take part in politics, they should be allowed to do so; however, the politics of chaos will never be tolerated. Regarding the building collapse in Lyari, he stated that the building was constructed illegally without any approved plan. Red Line and Yellow Line BRT projects: Sindh senior minister reviews progress
KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to introduce a significant number of electric and hybrid buses during the current financial year. Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, stated that in the coming months, along with double-decker buses, additional buses will be added to Karachi's roads. He further said that the transport system in the provincial capital is about set to be completely transitioned to electric buses. He said that following the introduction of EV buses for the first time in Pakistan, the Sindh government is also set to introduce double-decker buses, another first in the country's history. A high-level meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department was held in Karachi, chaired by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. The meeting was attended by Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, Managing Director of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority Kamal Dayo, CEO Trans Karachi Fawad Ghaffar Soomro, Project Director of the Yellow Line BRT Zameer Abbasi, as well as consultants and contractors associated with the project. The meeting reviewed the current status and progress of the ongoing construction work on the Red Line and Yellow Line BRT projects. Sharjeel Memon was given a detailed briefing on the progress of both initiatives. Officials informed the meeting that the Red Line BRT project is progressing according to its planned schedule, and construction activities have also been expedited across various segments of the Yellow Line project. Electric scooters to women: Sindh govt to hold ballot next month
KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to hold a balloting next month to distribute electric scooters to women. In the first phase of the project, 1,000 women will receive electric scooters, and all necessary arrangements have been finalized. A high-level meeting was held in Karachi, chaired by Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, to review in detail the progress of major transport projects including EV taxis and EV scooters. Sharjeel Inam Memon said that EV taxis and scooters are not only a source of employment for the youth but will also play a vital role in enhancing women's mobility and improving the environment. He added that the government is striving to launch the EV taxi project alongside the distribution of EV scooters among women by June 2025. The meeting was attended by Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, MD SMTA Kamal Dayo, CEO Trans Karachi Fawad Ghaffar Soomro, Director Yellow Line Zameer Abbasi, and other officials. The Project Director of the Yellow Line informed the meeting that a key component of the Yellow Line BRT project, the Jam Sadiq Bridge, will be completed by June 2025, three months ahead of the scheduled timeline of September 2025. He also informed that work on Depot 1 and Depot 2 is moving at a fast pace, and both are being completed ahead of time. Speaking on the Red Line BRT project while briefing, the CEO of Trans Karachi said intensive work is now in progress on building depots, stations, and the biogas plant. Sharjeel Inam Memon asked all the concerned institutions to complete the projects timely and of high standards so that modern, safe and reliable transportation facilities can benefit citizens. He further added that the early execution of the Jam Sadiq Bridge is a good thing, but such pace should be kept on all other projects as well. In the meantime, he underlined the imperative need of at least 500 new buses to deal with the transport issues in rural and urban Sindh. The meeting also saw a thorough debate on the EV taxi and scooter projects. Sharjeel Inam Memon said that since taking over the management of the Green Line BRT project, its performance has improved significantly. BRT to be completed five months ahead of schedule
Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon inspected the progress of Yellow Line BRT and inspected the progress of the project. He was given a detailed briefing on the project by the consultants. Talking to the media, the senior minister said that the Yellow Line BRT project was to be completed in September 2025 but will now be completed by May 2025, five months ahead of schedule. Talking about the Red Line BRT, he said that the project is facing some issues due to Civil Aviation, Water Board and K-4, which will be resolved soon. About the Green Line, he said that its fares will not be increased but the facilities will be further increased so that better travel facilities could be provided to the people.
