Tiruvallur freight train fire: Southern Railway completes track restoration work
The Southern Railway, during a night long restoration work on Sunday (July 13, 2025), restored both the up and down tracks which were affected after a fire accident and derailment of freight wagons near Tiruvallur. Earlier in the day, a wagon carrying fuel from Harbour to Wallajah siding, caught fire resulting in 12 wagons being damaged and derailment of six wagons. The fire accident resulted in several mail and express train services from Chennai being suspended; and termination and diversion of incoming trains. Suburban train services on the west section towards Tiruvallur and Arakkonam were completely stopped with shuttle services operated from Avadi to Moore Market complex (MMC) suburban railway station. M. Senthamil Selvan, Chief Public Relations Officer of Southern Railway, said as announced earlier, the tracks were made fit for operation and the Dr. MGR Chennai Central-Thiruvananthapuram (12695) express train was operated on the down line at 10 p.m. on Sunday and the upline was restored and Yercaud Express (22650) from Erode to Chennai was received. On Monday (July 14) morning, the Southern Railway also decided to operate suburban electrical multiple unit (EMU) trains between MMC and Tiruvallur and Arakkonam as specials at 30-minute intervals. Mr. Selvan said the suburban trains were operated taking into consideration the huge office-going population from Arakkonam and Tiruvallur, while maintaining normal EMU services from Avadi to MMC.

Attempt to derail Yercaud Express foiled near Salem
In an apparent attempt to derail train No. 22650 Erode–MGR Chennai Central Yercaud Superfast Express, miscreants allegedly placed a 10-foot-long iron rod (a piece of rail track) on the railway tracks near Magudanchavadi railway station in Salem district on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) night. The train collided with the obstruction and the locomotive was damaged. According to Railway sources, the train departed from Erode Railway Junction at 9:01 p.m. and crossed Mavelipalayam when, around 9:45 p.m. It was approaching Magudanchavadi railway station in the Sankari block. While passing through Kaligoundampalayam, the train struck the metal object and dragged it for about 300 metres. As a result, the brake lining of the engine jammed, rendering the locomotive inoperable. All passengers were safe. Upon inspection, the loco pilots discovered a piece of rail track wedged beneath the engine. Officials from the Salem Railway Division, personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF), and Magudanchavadi police were alerted and rushed to the scene. The obstruction was removed, and a replacement engine was dispatched from Erode. The train resumed its journey at 11:45 p.m., resulting in a delay of approximately two hours. Railway officials sais the incident also caused delays to many other trains. Train resumes journey after over 2-hour delay The Yercaud Express reached Salem Railway Junction with a delay of 2.19 hours and continued to Chennai, arriving at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday—3 hours and 50 minutes behind schedule. Police said an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attempted derailment. Railway authorities are also conducting an internal inquiry.

‘Iron rod placed on tracks': Alert loco pilot foils derailment bid on Yercaud Express in Tamil Nadu; halts train just in time
A potential disaster was averted on Tuesday night when vigilant engine pilots of the Yercaud Express, traveling from Erode to Chennai, detected a loud noise near Magudanchavadi. SALEM: A plot to derail the Yercaud Express train, which operates between Erode and Chennai, was prevented on Tuesday night at approximately 11.30pm due to the vigilant actions of the train's engine pilots. The Yercaud Express travels from Erode to Chennai Central railway station. The train departed from Erode on Tuesday night. As it approached the Magudanchavadi railway station in Salem district, around 11.30pm, the locomotive pilots heard a loud banging noise. The alert train drivers promptly halted the train. "Upon disembarking to investigate, we discovered that an iron bar had been placed on the tracks. The train had come to a stop at that very location," stated the locomotive pilots. They notified Salem railway division officials, who then arrived at the scene. According to railway and Magudanchavadi police officials, unidentified individuals had intended to derail the train by placing a 10-foot iron bar on the tracks. An investigation is currently underway at the site. Consequently, the Yercaud Express train left two hours later than scheduled.
