Carlos Carrasco rejoins the Yankees to bolster depleted bullpen
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Carlos Carrasco is back with the New York Yankees. The 38-year-old right-hander had his contract selected Sunday from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before the team's series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Advertisement Carrasco made six starts and two relief appearances for the Yankees from March 29 to May 4 while their rotation was ravaged by injuries. After going 2-2 with a 5.91 ERA, he was designated for assignment. Carrasco cleared waivers, however, and accepted an outright assignment to the minors, remaining in New York's system. The Yankees were in need of pitching help after losing 18-2 on Saturday. They used six of their eight relievers in the rout, including Brent Headrick and Yerry De Los Santos for the second day in a row, which made them unavailable Sunday. They also used position player Pablo Reyes in the eighth inning. To make room for Carrasco on the active roster, De Los Santos was optioned to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. ___ AP MLB:

Yankees outright veteran RHP Carlos Carrasco to Triple-A
May 8 - The New York Yankees outrighted right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, two days after they designated him for assignment. The Yankees recalled right-hander Yerry de los Santos from Triple-A on Tuesday in a corresponding move. Carrasco, 38, was 2-2 with a 5.91 ERA in eight appearances (six starts) for the Yankees this season. A veteran of 16 major league seasons with Cleveland (2009-20, 2024), the New York Mets (2021-23) and the Yankees, Carrasco is 112-105 with two saves and a 4.18 ERA in 332 appearances (283 starts). In one appearance with the Yankees earlier this season, de los Santos went two scoreless innings. He was 1-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 10 relief appearances at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. --Field Level Media

Yankees cut veteran Carlos Carrasco. Who will join rotation?
The Carlos Carrasco experiment is over in the Bronx. The New York Yankees designated the veteran starting pitcher for assignment before they faced the San Diego Padres at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday. They replaced Carrasco on the roster by calling up righty reliever Yerry de los Santos, who impressed in spring training and had a 1.74 ERA in 10 appearances at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Carrasco didn't pitch well for the Yankees, going 2-2 with a 5.91 ERA in six starts (eight games). The Yankees turned to him when starting pitchers Gerrit Cole (Tommy John surgery) and Luis Gil (strained lat) were injured during spring training. It always seemed like a long shot that the Yankees would be able to help the 38-year-old turn things around. He was coming off two terrible seasons with the New York Mets and the Cleveland Guardians. It's unclear who will take Carrasco's place in the rotation. Manager Aaron Boone was scheduled to speak with reporters before Tuesday's game. The Yankees could look to turn to lefty Ryan Yarbrough, who has been used mostly as a long reliever so far. He has a 3.72 ERA in nine appearances, and when he started in place of the injured Clarke Schmidt on Saturday, he gave up one run over four innings against the Tampa Bay Rays. Schmidt was slated to start Tuesday. The Yankees could also look to lefty Allan Winans, who hasn't given up a run in four games (three starts) at Triple A, striking out 24 in 14 innings. It might be the end of the line for Carrasco. His advanced metrics pointed to a pitcher who may not be capable of playing in the majors anymore. His 91 mph fastball velocity ranks within the bottom 10th percentile of pitchers. He also posted poor numbers in terms of chase rate (26 percent), whiff rate (22.6 percent) and barrel rate (12.1 percent). The Yankees also need better performances from rookie Will Warren. He's got a 5.65 ERA through seven starts, though the Yankees like his stuff and bat-missing ability (10.7 K/9). In other roster moves made Tuesday, infielder DJ LeMahieu's rehab assignment was transferred from Double-A Somerset to Triple A and reliever Scott Effross will begin a rehab assignment in the Florida Complex League.
