Passengers sue United for alleged Jew-hatred on flight to Israel

A group of 57 passengers recently sued United Airlines for alleged antisemitic discrimination, claiming the airline turned a plane around mid-flight to Tel Aviv from Newark, N.J., because many of the passengers were Jewish, the New York Post reported . The plane was turned around roughly three hours into a flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to Ben-Gurion International Airport on April 22, 2023, when a passenger sat in a flight attendant's seat while waiting for the restroom. The crew member then told the pilot there was a 'security threat,' according to the suit filed with the Manhattan Supreme Court. The lawsuit alleges that the flight crew 'blamed all the rest of the passengers,' many of whom were 'visibly Jewish,' and who were traveling home for Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha'atzmaut. The 'ill-trained and/or unvetted crew' then allegedly acted with 'prejudice,' according to the suit, the Post reported. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. Passengers state they did not receive assistance in rebooking new flights upon their return to Newark, with one passenger alleging that a flight attendant told them to 'go ask your own kind' for help, per the lawsuit. The suit added that United 'acted willfully, wantonly and with reckless disregard for the plaintiffs' rights, targeting visibly Jewish passengers as a group, denying them the continuation of their journey and subjecting them to humiliation and prejudice solely based on their religion and ethnicity.' United said the suit was 'meritless.' 'Our crew put safety first and exhibited professionalism in managing this matter, and we will vigorously defend against these false allegations,' the airline said in a statement, according to the Post. United is also the subject of a criminal complaint after one of its pilots allegedly forced open an airplane bathroom door while an Orthodox Jewish man was inside, despite having been notified that the man had a medical condition. United Airlines flight to Israel allegedly turned around after Jewish passenger sat in attendant's seat

These skies were not friendly toward Jews, a lawsuit claims. A United Airlines crew allegedly turned a flight with a significant number of Jewish passengers around after one sat in a flight attendant's seat while waiting for the restroom, according to a lawsuit. Nearly 60 passengers claimed the April 22, 2023 flight from Newark to Tel Aviv was returned to New Jersey 'after hours of flight for no valid reason' — simply because many of them were Jewish, according to the Manhattan Supreme Court papers. The flight crew allegedly 'blamed all the rest of the passenger's' after one person briefly sat in the flight attendant's spot while waiting to use the bathroom, resulting in the 'ill trained and/or unvetted crew' to act with 'prejudice,' the suit claimed. Many of the passengers in question were 'visibly Jews,' on their way to Israel to celebrate Yom Hazikaron, Israel's national day of remembrance, and Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israel's Independence Day. The passengers got no help booking new trips once the flight returned to Newark, and when one asked for assistance they were allegedly told by a flight attendant, 'Go ask your own kind,' according to the litigation. 'We want to see sensitivity training,' said attorney Yoram Nachimovsky, who is also seeking unspecified damages. 'If one person is acting bad it doesn't mean everyone around them is responsible.' 'We have reviewed the incident, and the plaintiffs' claims are meritless,' United said in a statement. 'One passenger who was a safety and security risk caused the flight to return to Newark. Our crew put safety first and exhibited professionalism in managing this matter, and we will vigorously defend against these false allegations,' the company added.

Hundreds gather for Israel's Independence Day celebration at Montreal park

By Hundreds of people waving Israeli flags gathered at Macdonald Park in the Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough Thursday to celebrate Israel's 77th Independence Day. The Independence Day rally, known as Yom Ha'atzmaut, is normally held downtown, but event spokesperson Anthony Koch said it was moved to the park for security reasons. 'In the last few years, things have gotten a little bit heated,' Koch said, referring to rising global tensions following the Hamas attack on Israel Oct. 7, 2023, and subsequent Israeli military operations in Gaza. 'The cops wanted to make sure that, unlike in past years, they could reasonably ... limit safety concerns.' By 10 a.m., more than a dozen counter-protesters — mostly Hasidic Jewish men — had gathered across the park, waving Palestinian flags. One shouted through a megaphone, 'Shame on you! You're not a Jew!' This story was originally published May 1, 2025 at 11:07 AM.
