Gilas Pilipinas Women lose to South Korea, fall out of contention in FIBA Asia Cup
The Gilas Pilipinas Women absorbed a 104-71 beating against South Korea on Friday in the semi-finals qualification match of the FIBA Women's Asia Cup to fall out of contention in the said tournament in China.
The Koreans started strong and outscored the Philippines, 30-16, in the opening frame before claiming a 59-32 lead at the end of the first half. The domination continued for South Korea in the third period despite the Philippines having a close score in the third period, 19-17.
Korea then had its biggest lead, 101-67, with 2:09 remaining in the fourth period before it clinched a spot in the semifinals.
Haeran Lee and Yoolim Kang led the Koreans with 24 and 21 points, respectively, while Jihyun Park and Jisun Park added 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Naomi Panganiban led Gilas with 19 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals while Vanessa de Jesus had 15 points, three assists, and two rebounds. Jack Animam was limited to three points but grabbed seven boards on top of three steals and two assists.
Gilas has been relegated to the classification stage and will play New Zealand on Saturday for the fifth spot.
