Drink-driver jailed after 80mph police chase in 30mph zone

Selby: Man who abused young children jailed for 25 years

A man who sexually abused young children then accused his victims of lying has been jailed for 25 Hrecko, 39, carried out a "vicious" sexual assault on a child in June 2023, North Yorkshire Police said, with further offences emerging following an investigation. At York Crown Court in February, Hrecko, from Selby, was found guilty of 14 sexual assault charges against children under 10. At the same court on Monday, he was told he would appear on the sex offenders register for life. Det Con Marcus Furneaux-Harris said: "The family concerned have had to endure two long trials before being able to see justice."Carl Hrecko's defence was solely to accuse the victims of which he had assaulted as lying to get him in trouble. "Hrecko was emotionless when the jury delivered their verdict."The detective commended the way the victims composed themselves during court proceedings and hoped the sentence would give them "some closure"."The bravery demonstrated by the children involved was inspirational and well beyond their years," he added. Two men who set a man on fire after squirting inflammable liquid on him have been jailed. Joshua Strickland and Robinson Binks forced their way into the property in Fossgate in York and attacked their victim as he lay on the sofa last April. York Crown Court was told the man called police screaming that he had been set on fire. Strickland, 30, was jailed for 14 years while Binks, 28, was given a 12-year sentence after both were found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm. The man was taken to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment to burns and blistering. Police said forensic tests from the scene detected low levels of petrol residues. 'Shocking incident' Strickland, of no fixed address and Binks, of Clarence Street, fled the scene after the attack on 19 April but were arrested a few days later. Strickland was also found guilty of witness intimidation and pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon and criminal damage after he attacked a vehicle belonging to a member of the victim's family and made threats to harm him and the rest of his family. He was also convicted of assaulting a police officer after kicking an officer in the face while in custody. Det Sgt Michele Fawcett, from North Yorkshire Police, said "This was a particularly shocking incident and could have been catastrophic for the victim." A paedophile who abused a six-year-old girl "destroyed and damaged innumerable lives", the victim's mother has Pearce, 76, abused the girl in Ryedale more than 10 years a victim impact statement read to York Crown Court, the girl's mother told Pearce: "I don't know if you will ever understand the consequences of your sexual depravity."He was jailed for two years and 10 months after earlier pleading guilty to sexual activity in the presence of a child. The mother said hearing details of what he had done to her daughter made her feel "physically sick to the pit of my stomach".She added: "Brian, you made a conscious decision, that decision has destroyed and damaged innumerable lives.""There is not a single person in my life that has not been impacted in some way and all that pain for your sexual gratification." 'Bravest person' She said the trauma her daughter had experienced had "broken my heart"."We will never know the woman she might have been if you had not abused, betrayed and damaged her both physically and mentally," she said."[She] will always be the bravest person I will ever know."Just by getting out of bed more days than not and even trying to engage with the world is more than I would be able to do."Pearce, who now lives in Northampton, was also made the subject of an indefinite sexual harm prevention Yorkshire Police investigator Doug Stanway said: "The term 'coward' does not even come close to describing Pearce."I hope the fact he's finally been convicted is some form of comfort to the victim and her family and they continue to heal from the ordeal he inflicted."
