Firefighters remain at scene of moorland blaze near Ripponden

Firefighters remain at the scene of a large moorland blaze in West Yorkshire and have advised people to avoid the blaze broke out near Oldham Road in Ripponden at about 12:15 BST on Thursday, with smoke billowing across the Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) said at its height the fire stretched for 1.2 miles (2km) with 18 crews in attendance.A spokesperson said seven crews and supporting units remained in the area after monitoring and tackling the fire overnight. The cause of the blaze is not known but it comes after a series of moorland fires in West Yorkshire in recent weeks and follows a long spell of dry fire prompted the closure of the A672 Oldham Road, heading towards Rishworth, and it remains shut. Northern Powergrid worker suffers burns in substation fire

An investigation has begun into the cause of a fire at a high-voltage electrical substation in Huddersfield, Northern Powergrid has firm confirmed that a member of staff was taken to hospital by ambulance after suffering burns in the fire on Market Street at around 20:30 GMT on Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews worked with West Yorkshire Police and Northern Powergrid as they tackled the fire.A spokesperson for Northern Powergrid said: "The site is now secure whilst we carry out an investigation into what caused the incident." West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said two breathing apparatus and one hose reel were used to extinguish the blaze. Residents were evacuated from a high-rise apartment building in Leeds after a fire broke out on the eleventh Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the blaze at the building on Wharf Approach in Holbeck at 17:37 GMT on crews and support teams were sent to the scene and residents were evacuated.A spokesperson said crews tackled the fire and the building was then handed back to the owners. A father-of-one drowned while enjoying a riverside picnic with his family, an inquest has Mohmed Chanda, 33, disappeared while playing in an inflatable dinghy with relatives on the River Wharfe at Burnsall in the Yorkshire Dales National Park on 11 Yorkshire Coroner's Court was told on Tuesday that 1,000 people were in the vicinity enjoying a family fun day on one of the hottest days of the summer.A firefighter who was one of the first at the scene said the depth of the river could vary from knee-high to 12ft (3.36m) and that Mr Chanda's body was recovered from the latter section. Mr Chanda and his wife Shezmeen Khalid Munshi had been visiting the area from Blackburn with their family when he got into difficulty, the inquest was said her husband had been "extremely happy" before entering the water, was fit and healthy and had learned to swim the previous Munshi said she felt "uneasy" when she saw the boat he had got into with his cousin and nephew return to the bank without him, and alerted emergency Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service crew manager Benjamin Rymer told the hearing that 15 firefighters had been called to the incident. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance also landed. A witness statement read out to the inquest detailed how a "splash and a shout for help" had been heard before other swimmers tried to rescue Mr Rymer said the fire service had arrived within 10 minutes of the 999 call being made and they located Mr Chanda's body on the opposite side of the river from where he had entered the water.A postmortem established the cause of death as asphyxiation due to immersion in coroner Jonathan Leach recorded a conclusion of death by misadventure and said there were no suspicious to highlights from North Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North or tell us a story you think we should be covering here.
